******************

Well, in this merry adventure of fates through the updates, we’ve started the last few times with Europe. That’s understandable–there’s quite a bit of war in Europe, and we need to get that out of the way often. So we’ll travel to East Asia for a bit of fresh air, peace, and serenity. Right? Wrong.

Apparently the East Asians, after hearing the tales brought by the Armenian voyagers (more on that later), decided that since wars were going on in every other major region (more on that later too), they might as well have one. Or maybe they had always thought this and decided the time was right.

So in any case, the Shu were still fighting their less than merry war in Bagan. The nation was still quite fiercely resisting, or attempting to, at any rate, but in the end the forces arrayed against them were far too large and well equipped. They succumbed to the Shu menace, but suddenly the large empire was confronted by a series of assaults that no one, not even any of their attackers, could have predicted.

Just as they were about to launch their campaigns against the Thais en masse, the Thais suddenly attacked ferociously in coordination with the Burmese, in a concordance of barbarian tribes that had never been seen before. And as the Shu marched to fend off these raids, Annam attacked in full force after the retreating Shu in that particular area. And then, as if solely to jump on the bandwagon (indeed surprising the other attackers in the area), the Kalingans attacked in full force, seizing some of the hardest gained lands of the Shu Offensive.

And then as if to top it all off, a strike from the Nan Yue took them totally by surprise, reaching the Yangtze before it was halted.

By this time, the emp–er... or I should say KING of Shu had found that he was not alone in being spontaneously attacked by his neighbors. An urgent diplo reached the Shu capital at nearly the last minute, pleading for help. The messenger claimed that the land of Chu was under attack from all directions at once, and that they were collapsing under the strain of having to deflect the attacks of Nippon, Min Yue, and Nan Yue at once.

The Nipponese, meanwhile, were gleeful to see their attack go so well. But for the minor setback of having the Bagans overrun, everything was going to plan. Even though Annam suddenly threatened to pull out of the coalition, furious that they had been lied to (for apparently the Nipponese had promised that they had already gotten the Tong on their side for this massive invasion, which was blatantly untrue), the war was going well enough, and it looked like in only a few short strokes, it could be won. Even as this happened, Nippon established a small foothold on Hokkaido with their Ronin and also managed to colonize Chubu and Tsushima, which in reality consisted of nothing more than clearing out the pirate bases and raising a few fishing shacks, one or two with a flagpole to hang the banner of the Empire of Nippon... In any case, the people are quite happy now that the pirates are gone.

On the other side of the strait, a sudden invasion of Song Korea by Silla took the small spearmen garrison completely by surprise, and the land was immediately lost to them. And this also, in effect, brought Song into the Great War of the East.

Meanwhile, however, they had their own problems to worry about–the Great Wall was broken in the region of Yan by the Xiong Nu, and a horde of raiders poured forth, far more than the Yan could summon a resistance to alone. Fortunately the Song had generously stationed troops in these areas, and it was this, perhaps, that kept the nation from completely falling.

The battle in Yan was sharp and furious, with the horsemen of the Xiong Nu charging the Song positions, which were situated on a hill, even as the nomad’s archers rained fire down from the heavens in the form of thousands of arrows. But even as this happened, the horsemen suddenly began to plunge into traps dug into the earth, swallowing their horses whole, and disrupting the momentum of the charge. The remaining horses were suddenly assailed by huge rolling logs down the hill, and the Song archers gleefully shot at the horsemen as they made an easy target.

Furious, the front line nomad commander ordered them to continue on foot, though this made them quite less effective, they still had their excellent bows to use, and their spears. The charge still had a few horsemen in it, in any case, and they swept up the hill, still considerably outnumbering the Song. Meanwhile, a horde of horsemen flanked the whole position and made it untenable by the Song commander’s point of view; rather than risk open battle on front and flank, he withdrew, leaving the Yan capital to fend for itself–and it obviously fell.

In the south of China, the Tong met the Armenian ambassadors cordially enough, and after they left, sent out explorers of their own to follow the route they had charted. Their ships reached the ports of Sumeria, holds full of spices and precious metals, where they received a handsome price for these and their silks.

Meanwhile, they continued expansion through the Phillipines and Malaysia, each of which were successful in their own right, though they soon met a native kingdom which was also expanding–Mindanao, Cordially making peace here, they also established trade rights with them.

Back home, they soon gained a monopoly on the iron trade after they had graciously been gifted it by the Shu ambassadors–and the trade companies soon made haste to secure every iron deposit under their somewhat despotic influence.

But even as these going-ons were occurring, something much more interesting happened on Taiwan. They were met on the isle by large ships of a completely unknown type with huge wooden outriggers. The wise ones of the locality, sure that they had finally contacted a completely unknown power, confirmed this by realizing the banners had absolutely no relation in all of China. But then they got their biggest shock of all. These people dressed foreignly, ate foreign foods, had odd customs and habits, yet they spoke Chinese. Tong Chinese.

They soon explained a fantastic tale that would have been dismissed if it had not been for the unusual circumstances. They apparently had been one of two ships that had not made it during the great Tong expeditions to the east of old, and they had gotten lost, and were adrift in the current. However, they soon bumped into a veritable fleet of small water craft, of a people who identified themselves as natives of an island chain to the unknown south, who were also lost.

They somehow managed to band together against all odds, staying in the current, and the fleet descended upon a virgin chain of islands that had never been seen before. Even as the natives fell victim to a few diseases, they still managed to survive, and interbreed with the Tong voyagers. Soon a racially mixed nation was established on these islands, and a kingdom was birthed.

What the trading cabal will do with these new people is uncertain, but they have a most interesting fruit. Which happens to be yellow on the inside, which happens to be the royal color of the emperor, which irks the Shu, which seems to immensely amuse the Tong. So perhaps there is a trading opportunity here. And the fruit even tastes good...

******************

Meanwhile, on the steppes, much happens. The Avars, rather bored with merely uniting their own people and expanding, launch a massive war against the Tartars. Which gains land that looks impressive on a map, but they hardly actually battled anyone, anyway. Most of the Tartar strength seems to be far east, attacking China.

Meanwhile, a royal marriage is arranged with the Scythians.

(Avars: -500 steppe cavalry)

******************

Meanwhile, Persia has been a bit bowled over in the last one hundred years. Initially, of course, it was just a Scythian invasion, but suddenly a huge Armenian invasion took them utterly by surprise. The Persians were suddenly being attacked from all directions but the south, and ground was lost all over.

For their part, Armenia managed to easily crush the Persian armies in the north, but found further progress south blocked by their supposedly allied Scythians. Who are still, in effect, allied, but not necessarily the most cooperative of the allies we’ve seen.

Armenian explorers, meanwhile, reach the Tong and return home with holds full of exotic goods, giving a goodly boost to the economy as a new, sea route is found for the trade goods of the east. Silk is now not just a hard to find good, but all the rage among the upper class of Armenia, if still far too expensive for a lower class to buy.

On the other hand, Armenia has been doing some other warmongering as well. A sudden surprise attack overwhelms the small Syrian garrison in the town of Samosata, and the forces continue onward as quickly as they can to Damascus.

Even as the Syrians gather to resist this particular incursion, a huge force of Cimmerians suddenly strikes from their new home. Well, about half of them. The other half joined the Syrians and settled in Egypt, almost like good barbarians for about a year, until they rose up, but more about that later.

In any case, the sudden attack takes Antioch relatively easily, and heads down in a sudden strike towards the Phoenician cities. These were relatively easily taken, however, it was here that the shaalim took down the leader of the barbarian army easily, leaving the horde leaderless. Which was certainly not helpful to their ability to wage war.

Thus, the “final confrontation” of sorts that was to occur at Damascus was solely between the Armenians and the Syrians. The armies were almost relatively equal as they drew up for battle, and though the Armenians had the numerical edge and the advantage of relative surprise, the Syrians were fighting on their home front, for the beloved Maluk. It was to be an epic clash...

But naturally we’ll leave you hanging in suspense as much as possible. :)

Far to the southern end of the Empire, the Syrians abruptly withdrew from the Yemen even as the Sabaens landed on the coast. The following was rather amusing, and somewhat tense all the same, as the Syrians harassed and raided the Sabaens, and vice versa. Absolutely nothing was gained, and many viewed it as a pointless conflict.

Even as this happened, Sabaen soldiers landed all over the Red Sea coasts, stirring up rebellion, and several small naval skirmishes broke out as the “Sudafrikan Republik” fleet engaged them, even rather small as it was. Unfortunately for Syria, the Sabaens won all of these skirmishes.

The Sabaens had problems of their own, however, as attempting to raise rebellions was for the most part a dismal failiure, except for one location, eastern Egypt on the coast, where some resettled Cimmerians killed not only some Syrian garrisons, but the Sabaen soldiers as well. Go figure.

The warlord of this particular band wants, apparently, to carve out a name for himself and a kingdom for his ancestors in the Nubian region, and all are watching this warlord rather apprehensively.

In a trademark annoying maneuver, the Egyptians suddenly rise in rebellion in the Asyut area of the Syrian empire. They take over a small area, but are contained from further expansion so far by a major influx of the local garrison, and they have not yet reached the crucial Syrian farmland. The rest of the Syrian empire remains loyal as the economy rises...

Which brings us back to Damascus. The battle began at dawn and lasted several hours, when suddenly the noonday sun began to go black. In one of the most shocking events of the century, the armies simply stopped fighting and stared at the eclipse of their sole source of light... The Malukists took it to mean the end was at hand and charged ferociously into battle, and the Armenian acolytes fought as hard as they could as well. The battle went nowhere, with massive casualties on both sides, before someone in the Armenian army had the sense to break out every weapon, and dozens of pots of the Faison's Fire rained down on the Syrian army, breaking the fanatics like no other weapon could, for it seemed the fire and brimstone of hell rained down upon them. This stiffened the resolve of a stubborn few, of course, but the rest broke, and fled into the city.

At long last, the Armenians advanced, and laid siege to the city of Damascus, and already fires from their furious concoction have broken out all over the city.

(Syria: -2,000 spearmen, -2,000 archers -1,000 UU, -10 galleys, +5,000 fanatics [gathered in Palestine], Armenia: -500 UU, +3,000 fanatics, -2,000 spearmen, -1,000 archers, Sabae: -1,000 spearmen, -500 archers, -500 swordsmen; Persia: -2,000 spearmen, -1,000 archers)

Onto Minoa.

The island republic has done well for itself, Knossos has been transformed from a small capital into one of the greatest ports in the Mediterranean. And with the growth in the capital has come a growth in empire. Elephants were recruited from their African colonies, something very few people noticed, and even fewer realized exactly what it was pointing at. Troops were raised, alliances were signed.

Oh, and they united with Illium. Which completely threw the balance of power out of whack, and the entirety of the Aegean Sea was destabilized. But this was only the beginning (I know this sounds like a cheap horror flick at this point).

The Minoans attacked Anatolia in a full force, multi pronged invasion that left little to doubt, and the relatively peaceful Anatolians were dealt a deathblow fairly early on. Their armies were shattered, and their nation left in a few dusty ruins. This is exaggeration, but only slight.

In a few years, the Minoans have taken down all the Anatolians worked so hard to build, and they have utterly crushed the former nation of steppe nomads. Anatolia has reached its twilight hours, and the star of Minoa continues to rise.

Which is not to say that the Minoans were successful everywhere. Far from it. The campaign in Greece was an utter fiasco, as huge amounts of Theban troops broke the siege in a tremendous clash of spearmen, that left the Minoan and Mycenae forces utterly devastated. Of course, the Thebans failed to note that they had another enemy, and their armed forces quickly succumbed to the Macedonians. The siege which had been lifted suddenly was back on, though this time it was now three nations instead of two–three nations that sincerely distrusted each other.

(Minoa: -3,000 spearmen, -1,000 archers; Thebae: -6,000 spearmen; Macedon: -2,000 spearmen, -300 horsemen; Anatolia: -3,000 spearmen, -1000 archers; Mycenae: -3,000 spearmen)

In other news, the republic of Ravenna makes a few major advances.

Ravennan forces assist the Pannonians in making a large move against the Cimmerian intruders, who are somewhat battered by this new assault, and driven back into the hills and forests from whence they came, which is presumably the desired result. The Falxatii are particularly interesting, and powerful, though they aren’t exactly the best unit to deal with Cimmerians, they are still powerful.

However, their drive stops at the border of a people called the Tauri, apparently an Armenian influenced Cimmerian state, and a quick exchange of ambassadors is made. The states eye each other with wariness now, though neither has made any moves. It remains to be seen what will happen on this border.

The heart of Ravenna gears for war as enormous armories are created and thousands find worked in forging the iron that will go into the new armies of the Republic. The Optimates are upgraded and expanded, and new produce comes in from the Danube region. Unfortunately, this does not quite stem the tide of Syrian goods as much as would be desired.

The Euphrates Pox slips into the nation quietly, undetected, but shortly after its landfall, lands a tremendous blow on the Republic. Hundreds of thousands have died, a vast number, and the plague spread with the march of the Ravennans northward, and the trade ships of the Balearics westward. In a short hundred years, the plague has completely devastated Western Europe, with no nation safe; Portugal, Germany, France, they have all been hit.

Overall, millions have died now. Of them more are in France and Germany than any other area; the practices of the Ravennans and the Portugese alike see to be doing something, at least, to combat the plague. But none are truly spared, and the economy plunges in all nations.

But then, perhaps the people of this area would be more interested to know about the war? Thought so.

We’ll start with the south.

The Balearic Islanders begin it with a ferocious naval attack on Portugese ships moored near Gibraltar. The battle is quick and bloody, with many an unprepared ship again succumbing to the menace of the island fleet. More Portugese ships are able to get away, of course, but it is still a blow to their pride.

(-20 Portugese ships, -10 Tartessian ships, -10 Balearic ships)

Unfortunately for the islanders, their success at sea has been easily countered by failings on land, as their army facing the Tartessians is hugely outnumbered by a last minute conscription of all willing souls in the smaller nation to fight the invader. They suffer minimal casualties as the commander saw sense and drew back, but their pride is severely wounded.

(-1,000 Balearic spearmen, -300 Balearic horsemen, -4,000 Tartessian spearmen)

And in more shocking news yet, the Portugese push southward across the Pyrenees, helped by the Basques’ knowledge of the passes, easily smashing the Balearic garrison there and burning some of the farmland near Zaragoza. The Balearics will need a lot of luck or skill, or both, to keep Aragon from falling to the menace.

(Balearics: -1,000 spearmen, -500 archers, Portugese: -10 elephant archers, -500 horse archers, Basques: -2,000 spearmen)

With that theater essentially done, we turn backwards to the Italian peninsula.

The forces of Epirus have invaded the heel of Italy! With a mysterious source of elephants that hasn’t quite clearly been figured out, they manage to crush a few Ravennan armies sent at them until someone has the sense to take a leaf out of their ally’s book: they chuck flames at the elephants and scare them. This has caused the Epirans to retreat, but they are still in a few cities.

(Ravenna: -1,500 spearmen, -500 archers, Epirus: -10 war elephants, -3,000 spearmen)

The Ravennan attempt to procure even nastier demons than the Portugese is a dismal failure, as the demons don’t really take to being bred in pens. Not saying any more.

******************

Meanwhile, the Libyan peoples suddenly take to pirating as a national sport. Minoa, Ravenna, and the Garamantes are not amused.

******************

“...To deceive a nation thus, by claiming withdrawal, then turning and slaughtering innocent farmers and villagers, to turn a war into a brutal massacre, to turn the art of war into such a despicable spectacle–there is no greater travesty. Not in all my years with the Optimates have I seen such a thing, and I hope never to see it again.

Indeed, this is why we march! This, not the desire for lands, but bringing justice to the slayers of innocents, that is why we Ravennans march, to bring peace, to bring order, to bring justice! We stand here at the foot of an Alpine pass, the Ravennan side. We will come out into German territory. We face a difficult fight ahead, but no matter how difficult, remember in your hearts, men, that you fight against child slayers. You fight against the scum of the earth. And we shall prevail. We shall prevail!” –Marcus Aurius, later surnamed Germanicus for his successful capture of Nuernberg and march to the north.

And indeed, at first, the Germans did seem to withdraw. A considerable contingent left French territory to cross the Rheine again, and as they packed up, the people celebrated. And died.

In one of the most brutal, hateful maneuvers of the mellenium, the Germans slaughtered every single living thing in the lands they left. As much as they could, they destroyed the farms, the animals, the people, all in cold blood. All to deny the French the resources of these lands.

Over a million people died at the hands of the German army, until finally the people rose up. A huge citizen army, disgusted at the evil that now seemed to plague Germany, rose up all at once, a tremendous horde of people, over ten thousand in size. They furiously pursued the Germans out of the land, and the enemy army fled, but the damage had been done. The Rhineland of France was utterly ruined.

However, the Germans seriously miscalculated. They were indeed correct in assuming that the French army would run off to kill the slayers of their own citizenry, but they did not count in another French army being there to intercept them when they got to Paris.

The sneaky group of Berlin Guards, spearmen, and archers, were making their way to Paris, sure that their victory was absolute, and then their column happened upon a huge force of furious French. The enraged knights charged forth into battle, and the surprised German army was suddenly engaged, even as a large group of peasantry approached from their rear and threw rocks. They fought bravely, but in the end they were massacred to a man, and the German army was utterly thrashed.

This opened up the floodgates, and the Ravennan army marched immediately after receiving the news. They easily crashed into a garrison-less Bavaria and Wurtemburg, ploughing onward towards the cities of the Rheine. Suddenly forces from Friesland were seen, too, invading the Germans, and the French citizen army still advanced. The Germans fled, tail between their legs, and narrowly avoided getting slaughtered.

However, the German civilians, enraged by revenge raids by the French citizen army, have risen up, in somewhat smaller number, to arms, too.

The northern Portugese commander, considering for a while the utter slaughter of the Germans and how he had been ordered not to advance in the first place, reconsidered his almost commenced march on Paris and instead took the Breton capital.

(Germany: -all Berlin Guards, -1,000 archers, -2,000 spearmen, -200 chariots, +5,000 peasants; France: -500 knights, -1,000 spearmen, -1,000 swordsmen, +10,000 [rather enraged] peasants)

******************

The war in the British Isles continues in a slightly less bloody fashion than their Continental counterparts, and the Dumnonii capital is placed under Cantivelliaunii siege.

******************

The northlands are peaceful and quiet. Lapponia gains a huge increase in farming and looks on in some disgust towards their southern neighbors as news of the German atrocities slips out. Other than this, all is peaceful.

On the other side of the Gotian trading empire, the new nation of Preternaturia arises from the silent lands of the Slavs and soon rises to become a rather large principality. They have a mysterious religion, a mysterious leader, and many more mysterious things as well, apparently, and the Gods look favorably upon these being elaborated upon.

The Visigoths arise from a nondescript Gothic tribe to begin to forge a republic, though it is more of an oligarchy, and a backwards one at that. They are in something of a struggle with more Cimmerian nomads.

Good friends! This war had perfect reasoning behind it, be assured. The Shu King himself tried to entice us into a war with you!
He told us an assault on your borders by the Thai & Burmese was inevitable, and they banked on our limited knowledge of Indochina to make us seem the fools. They offered many gifts to betray our trading allies.
We did not fall for the trick, and instead have turned the tables on the corrupt King. We, being the reasonable and righteous nations of China, ask upon the Tong to help in this endeavor. We do not ask much, maybe a detachment of your world-renowned fighters or a fleet of your mythical ships. Some how, we must find a way to defeat this corrupt power. this war is meaningless. border exchange between France, Germany and Portuigal has gone of for decads, nay, centuries!

for the good of all, come to a peace treaty. Terms cant be that unacceptable to either side, and thier must be some way that all sides involved may get what they want.

Pray tell how declaring war on Chu would assist in your taking Shu? (Bloody hell, it rhymes) I would have gladly assisted you if you attacked Shu, because I certainly believe what you say is the truth.

Much as we dislike our fraternal Chinese brothers, we cannot tolerate foreign incursion into the Homeland. Perhaps as a sign of good faith, you could withdraw your terrible and uncalled-for attack on Chu. If your argument is with Shu, then do so with Shu.

Thank you for your information, we shall deal with Shu - personally.

We wouldve liked to avoid the Chu, but the Shu informed us of an alliance they had together. The Chu is not much more than an extension of the Shu it seems. If we had just attacked Shu, Chu would have attacked us anyway. We are sure of it.

As for encroaching, I have already promised the Yue almost all of the land save for Shanghai and a small area around it for trade purposes. We too prefer trade to conquest, but we could not ignore the threat Shu presented to Nipponese & Tong interests.

Unfortunately, you may have mistaken Chinese trade relations for an alliance. Our culture is such where hostages are usually exchanged whenever trade between two states are opened, and as you probably have noticed, interstate immigration and emigration in the Homeland is very open.

I am positive that your thought of Chu being an outcropping of Shu is mistaken. Pray, as a sign of good faith, take your argument to Shu - and withdraw from Chu.

No, they specifically said ALLIANCE. We would not overlook such a deal as this so blatently. They told us, and threatened us saying they would protect thier ally. This was several turns ago before we had any notion of invading Chu.

If you allow Chu to survive, they will likely latch back onto Shu! If we had not invaded Chu, then the Shu could not be properly reached (not with our navy anyway) and the Chu would have counter-invaded and likely destroyed our armies. Chu is an ally of the Shu, it is more than just a trade agreement we are sure.

We reiterate. We believe that the comminiques got lost in translation. It is quite a frequent case.

Let us put it this way. If you withdraw from Chu, we shall ensure that Chu does not attack your Navy, nor interfere with your attack on Shu in any way.

(Note: Events in this story take place before the update, I was just too lazy to write it then.)

A thousand fires raged in the beseiged city of Eridu, sending pillars of black smoke into the summer sky. Flaming shot from the Arab catapults descended on the city like fireballs flung from the heavens by Anu himself.

Catapults! Nebuchadnezzar was still unable to believe that the barbarians had been able to procure such weapons. He sat, perched upon his horse, vanguard of the massive army sent from Babylon to drive the Bedouins away. Outside of the city walls, thousands of barbarian warriors swarmed, chanting war cries. Nebuchadnezzar was able to spot the catapults atop several hills in the distance. If there was any doubt in his mind that the Bedouin attack on Eridu had not been orchestrated by a higher power, it was gone now.

The Babylonian army moved into the city from the rear gate. Men and women burst from their houses, some of which were on fire, kissing the feet of the soldiers and rattling off praises in Sumerian. Nebuchadnezzar arranged his army around the main ziggurat of the city. He rode up to one of his most trusted generals, Ekurzakir.

"My king, the men are prepared for battle. Our first move should be to move our archers onto the walls, and try to drive the Arabs away from the walls. Then, we can send the army outside-"

"Thank you, General, but I have a slightly more elaborate idea. You see, if we sent the army outside the gates, the Arabs would simply retreat to their camps, and our army would be the perfect target for those catapults. We must destroy the catapults before we move the army out into the open."

"But sire, how could we possibly do that without sending the soldiers outside the gates?"

Nebuchadnezzar smiled. "We do something the Bedouins would never expect. We make our soldiers... invisible."

To be continued.

"This has become a bloody, bloody affair, and I fear that its conclusion will only come once the blood debt owed by the Germans has been paid to the French, for both sides now lust with hatred for each other; for the sake of both nations, we must strive for victory, so that no more wanton death need happen. Keep yourselves safe, and do great deeds on these feilds, my men, for it is our duty to teach them what an honorable warrior can do"- Marcus Aurius

The Back Story
Spoiler :

They had been going on for centuries, and Ravenna was merely the latest pawn in what must have been a grand game played by the Gods themselves, moving their pieces, their favorite mortals into and out of danger- predestined fate wasn’t a concept most people in Ravenna put any stock in; choice is the word in the land, and it had been choice that had kept our nation out of the wars- the bloody, futile wars- for centuries.

Who started it, or over what reason it was started weren’t remembered, not by Ravenna at least, but then, we had the luxury of not needing to pay much head to the Portugese, or the Balearics, or the Franks; relations had been good with all of them, and amicable settlements were often concluded. Treaties that had kept Ravenna at peace with the other major powers for centuries, treaties that Ravenna would like to have in place still, but had always been weary -always been preparing for the day when someone would break those treaties, and indeed, someone did.

It had been King of the Germans, Arminius who had broken the treaty of the borders, a treaty that had been purposed by the republic in the interest of keeping the peace, for even so long ago, it was obvious that the Rhineland would cause only trouble to the two people whom clung to its shores; the mainland Celts, knows as Gauls, organized under the Fancii confederation, and eventually, kingdom of France, the Saxon confederation, that would mature into the kingdom of Germany.

It was little surprise that Germany was the nation to break its oath; its kings had always been boisterous, and loud mouthed, but weak, in body, mind and spirit, and seemed to have little care for the negotiations rapidly agreeing to it; that they would use the great war as a spring board to try to conquer France, while not unexpected in theory, had been a surprise to everyone- but provisions had been made, treaties had been signed, and Ravenna had been watching... and waiting.

The treaty, The Treaty of Orleans had been signed in secret, so as to be a secret provision that anyone who would try to aggress on either nation would not be able to prepare for- and so when Germany struck, it had no idea what it was in for.

They had taken advantage of the French so long and involved in fighting the Portugese both directly and indirectly, that an already strained land was turning a blind eye to their covetous Northern Neighbor, and when they stuck, their blow was swift, unexpected by the French, but not by Ravenna- and so when the time came to honor our treaty, the nation rose up, and the Lion of Europe lets its roar be known. Striving for peace Ravenna had attempted to broker a peace treaty, offering the gifts of the world in the form of a trade route be opened unto the Germanic lands, to offset the wasted resources of a dishonorable invasion of France, and to reclaim the respect it had lost in the eyes of the world. But Germany was weak. It could not hold up the treaty, and turned once again to cowardice, and trickery to try to achieve goals that it had once said were taboo, and agreed not to strive for. And Ravenna had known that this too would come about, and prepared for both eventualities. And so with the disgraceful fall from innocence, the Germans unleashed upon themselves the wrath, and horrors that would follow. They unleashed on themselves what would be The Germanic Wars

Violence
Spoiler :

The Germans made good gains, at first, though the French heroically offered resistence, and while the battle of Atuatuca was bloody, and claimed by many to be a draw, it was unofficially a German victory; the situation of France had been made critical, and pressed by both sides, everyone knew it, and so when Ravenna pressed for a peace treaty with Germany, while their had been high hopes they would keep their word, no one took it seriously, for they had already betrayed their word once, and where unlikely to be honorable again until they had tasted the taste of cold steel slicing into their own nation.

At first, it seemed like the Germans would keep their treaty; border watches along the wall reported seeing mass movements of German troops across the souther Rhine- it was only later that the heinous truth would be known- the Germans were responsible for the death of not hundreds, nor thousands but over a million people; men, women, children, the elderly- the innocent- none were sparred the sword, what the Germans could not carry as loot, plunder, spoils or supply was burned, land salted, animals killed, mines collapsed and temples torn down, all to spite the French; And if to add a final act of spite hatred, and vileness, the Germans turned around, and they broke their treaty, broke it once more.

Once the word had gotten to Ravenna, the senate was stunned; their were no border towns left along the french side of the German occupied zone none. It what had been deemed risky, but necessary, border guards had silently passed into French lands, looking for anyone, though all across the border, no more the 30 people had been found alive, mostly women and children whom had hid away from the German onslaught in wine cellars or just under burnt debris from the ruins of their towns. Hurried to the capital city of Ravenna, they were brought into, as they were, dirty and sobbing into an emergency session of the senate, with the border reports in, and the testimony of the few people found, their was no argument to be had; Ravenna would lead a counter Invasion of Germany, we would show them what it meant to make war, and we woudl show them how it was done with honor, we would not kill their land, take their meals, rape their women, sack their towns or take their treasure; we are men of Ravenna, the grand republic and we are a higher caliber of men then that.

Action is taken
Spoiler :

As always, the senate was swift in it decision, and it arrangements; a surprise compared to most other form of republic, such as that which the Minoans use, which is little more then a glorified oligarchy anyway, the commander appointed was Primero Marcus Aurius a proud, honorable, and seasoned warrior, he was universally chosen among the Tribuneate to lead the expedition; a seasoned Optimate Optimo from years back, he had conducted many a lesser war with the Vandals, and was seasoned like no other to tack on their only slightly more organized cousins, the Germans.

Loved by his men, feared by his enemies, he lead the bloody and ruthless lightning strike into Germany, and while resistence was thin, thier was no mercy given to those whom would defend Germania. Bloody and ruthless, and his drive into Germany was called “bloodless”- not a single man was lost; he inspires a courage in his men seen only once in a generation, if not once in era; for the difference between Ravenna, and all other nation whom are in the great war is a simple one; we fight most decidedly for the good fight, and every man of Ravenna knows this, not because he told this, but because the events that have transpired make this clear to him.

While the Germans have driven the French into action, with a mighty uproar of fury, and the french counter invasion offer too a mighty uproar, there is no hatred in the lands that Ravenna holds. Indeed, the lands in the south of Germany under the temporary occupation of Ravenna see a more prosperous and peaceful future then they had under their homeland, and military governors rule partially, and with the consent fo local councils; an alien concept to a people so use to being under the yoke of oppression by the nobility, that to have Freedom is... a concept they have not known before, and seem unwanted to pass away, and the soldiers of Ravenna, passing in their columns, fighting so that neither German nor French may need fear the others savagery ever again are looked up too as the role models for young children now, rather then the lewd warrior of a nobles retinue who comes passing drunkenly through the streets of a town, looking noisily for a whore house, that may or may not exist.

Ravenna has taken action, its armies, fighting with a fury that might dared be called “holy”, or at least righteous in the extreme wont be stopped by the vile barbarities of the Germans, or what ever peoples they may pervert to their cause; for Germany will be vanquished of the terror that posses it, and a new day of peace will dawn on Europe
