They are the acolytes of the church of pi.

And once a year many of them gather to talk about pi, rhapsodize about it, eat pi-themed foods (actual pie, sure, but so much more), have pi recitation contests and, just maybe, feel a little less sheepish about their unusual passion.

That day falls on Wednesday this year: March 14. Or 3.14. Obviously.

According to this article:

(Incidentally, the world record belongs to Chao Lu, a Chinese chemistry student, who rattled off 67,890 digits over 24 hours in 2005.

Pah that's nothing, OT'ers have been gathering together to rattle off 67,890 digits worth of absloute rubbish every day for years. :)

Anyway, nominate your favourite strange hobby.

I play Civilization III and Alpha Centauri. I also occasionally post on obscure internet forums.

Ooh, thanks for the reminder, I've been meaning to send one of my friends a Happy Pi Day card for years. :)

:hmm: Oh snap, and my dad's birthday was yesterday! :run:

Er ... strange hobbies. Um. Hamster-breeding? I subscribe to a club and journal about hamsters and keeping hamsters and breeding hamsters, despite the fact that I have only made one (unsuccessful) attempt ever at breeding one of my hammies. Oh, and I haven't had one for nearly five years.

May Pi save your soul Pboily. Maybe ten "Hail pi's" would do it?

I've found something similar:

HELSINKI: A Finnish member of parliament is aiming for re-election by campaigning with a translation of his website into Klingon, used in the TV series Star Trek.

Learning Klingon's got to be a pretty strange hobby. And if you're an MP, writing your election website in Klingon is slightly strange too.

On the other hand, if your other language is Finish........

Good god, how I wish these nerds would stay as far away as possible from mathematics.

And you call yourself a mathematician? :shake:

ぴ

Yes, worship the mighty hiragana pi!!! :mwaha:

ピ

Or you can worship the mighty katakana pi! :mischief:

Just one example on how The Church of pi is one of thoes wasting your time hobbies ;).

Well, time to eat some 3.1415926535897932384626... And that's all I got memorized. Too lazy for more.

:hmm: Oh snap, and my dad's birthday was yesterday! :run:

Send him a card dated on his birthday by mail, and just blame slow mail for it not arriving on time if he asks. ;)

sleep is a hobby of mine...pretty rare practice these days...even I don't have much time to indulge in it

creating completely random and ridiculous movies as part of a mini-TV series...with so many inside jokes very few other than the creators find the vidoes humorous

Extreme Ironing:

We've lost an empire and we're looking for a role - not any more. We may be a second rate island off the coast of France, but when we're World leaders at extreme ironing!

I like to randomly surf the Wikipedia in search of articles that need editing. When I find one, I fix the spelling, grammar, and punctuation. And that's fun.

As for pi, my favorite kind is saskatoon. :yumyum:
