Student accused of "creating a monster"!

It's rather sad that he will likely always have a criminal record for a simple college prank which likely cost the taxpayers less than $50 - at least until you factor in the cost of his prosecution...

It all depends on the total cost of the items he took. Those cones don't come cheap. If the total is big enough he could be charged with a felony at which point he will really be in deep kimchee. He needs to find a good lawyer who is adept at working with the District Attorney. Otherwise, this kid is scrood big time.

By the way, it's funny but the victims of vandalism and theft never seem to have a sense of humor. Why is that?

Waiting for VRWC to come in an condem him.

I think this is awesome and should be preserved!

Damned right I'll condemn it. He stole state goods that the good taxpayers of North Carolina paid for (and likely me as well since I am sure NC gets federal highways funds.) What, he's not getting enough free help with the State supported university, he has to go out and vandalize public property?

I took the time to google before posting:

RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina State University student faces criminal charges for what is best described as a "barrel monster" built out of orange construction barrels that became an Internet sensation.

Raleigh police believe the monster was the brainchild of Joe Carnevale, a 22-year-old junior majoring in history. It had a short lifespan, up for less than a day on May 31.

Made of construction barrels being owned by a contractor working on the Hillsborough Street round-a-bout project , the monster sported a wide, toothy grin and pointed an extended finger at motorists on the thoroughface near the university's campus.

Though Raleigh police seized the barrel statue on May 31 as evidence, they didn't arrest Carnevale until Wednesday, according to Laura Hourigan, a police spokeswoman. Carnevale is now facing misdemeanor charges of damage to property and larceny. He'll be in court on July 21.

The larceny, according to arrest warrants, came when Carnevale took "three road blocking barrels and damaged them by cutting and screwing them together to make a statue."

Although my estimate of $50 could be low...

Oh, my apologies. I guess it wasn't public property after all, so the taxpayers are off the hook. He instead decided to harm the finances of a company that hires and employs people, the company thereby benefiting the overall economic health of NC and by extension the country as a whole. Well done, history major loser!

I know. Why do they insist on openly defying all the subliminal messages while engaging in obvious criminal behavior?

VR..I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. :(

If he's going to use property belonging to others, he better take responsibility for it.

A misdemeanor is no big deal.

It is what he should have got.

A felony would have been ....... well criminal

A Gross Misdemeanor would have been over the top too.

If he was really clever he would have made the sculpture, advertised & sold it before the bumbling authorities could catch up with him & with the money he made pay back double what he stole from the construction company & still have enough left to celebrate. :D

Why would he have enough left to celebrate? Do you actually think criminals should profit from their crimes?

The evildoer who created this monster reminds me a bit of Dawgphood. :D

It is funny, but he shouldn't have gotten caught. And he does look a lot like DP.

There is a passing familiarity I will admit, but he looks nothing like me, at least not right now...

...

In regards to the thread, this just goes to show that bureaucrats and anyone who supports the punishment of this kid has no joy in their hearts. Live a little, jeezus.

Depends on the crime.

Some things which are technically crimes are actually good deeds which should be rewarded. Anyone who doesn't agree with that isn't just wrong, he's an outright idiot.

If there's any debate it should be over whether this is one of those instances. If a lot of people liked that monster I would say it is.

He did nothing different than someone driving by and shooting someone's window out. It imposed a financial drain on someone else that he had not right to impose.
