Stupid goddamn Windows Update restarts

I leave my computer on or in hibernate all the time because I leave all my windows open. Some of those windows are notepad files that I don't have the sense to save. When stupid goddamn Vista downloads and wants to install updates, it gives me that stupid goddamn window that says it's gonna restart in ten or whatever minutes. That stupid goddamn window gives me the option to postpone the restart, but only if I catch it in those ten minutes and only for four hours. This pisses me off. I want to tell it "no, do not restart until I tell you to", but there is no apparent option for that. Instead it restarts and I lose all the open crap and forget half the things I was doing.

Is there any way to stop this, and make it not automatically restart?

Also when it does these autorestarts it totally screws up my windows sidebar, it removes some of the gadgets and messes up the settings on others. Why does this happen and how can I stop it?

How bout you have it notify you of updates when they become available, and maybe download them, but not install. That way, you can install them when you have some time!

Yeah, the default Windows Update configuration is infuriating. You can change it in the Group Policy editor ( Win+R->"gpedit.msc")

Enable the marked setting, and Windows Update will no longer reboot your computer without your explicit permission.

I set it to just notify me, cause it's so annoying. but that's already been suggested.

Also, odd, gpedit.msc doesn't exist, so I typed in 'group policy editor':

With Vista the upgrade to Windows 7 is routine. Just dump vista for 7.

That's what I want it to do. How do I make it do that?

Till, it told me it didn't know what I was asking for.

I don't have a buck twenty sitting around for something I really don't need. :(

I think you go to control panel, then to Windows Updates, and change it there.

Thanks guys. I probably could've googled that. What about the sidebar?
