Notes:

- Beelined for iron working
- Barbarians (goody hut) sack Persepolis on 2 consecutive turns
- Meet Babylon (to southwest), buy pottery (2350 BC)
- Pasargadae founded (2030 BC); meet Zulu (to the north) & traded tech for warrior code
- Susa founded (1600 BC); iron in city radius ;)
- Babyon & Zulu at WAR
- iron exhausted (1150 BC) :( ; Shaka & Hammurabi begin extorting Perisa
- established embassy w/ Babylon in 925 BC
- Antioch founded (850 BC)
- early GWs built by Zulu * Indians
- Gordium founded (50 BC)
- purchased polytheism from Zulu for 4 gpt & 53g
- Saved Game 30 AD

I've placed a stack of 6-8 archers one tile away from Ninevah (Babylon) & building up stack (currently 4) by Akkad - both south of Persepolis. Offensive against Babylon was my next phase - was thinking of waiting to place a stack outside of Urul as well, but wary of waiting too long. Two techs (CoL & Currency) away from medieval age. Babylon & Zulu are around 550 points while Persia is around 280.

If anyone wants the save to take over from here for a while then PM me your email. I'll send the save on to ya. Territory pic included.

By 30AD, I found Persia to be developing nicely, sandwiched in between Babylon and the Zulu - not a good spot, given that Persia has no iron for Immortals, and no horses to boot. Typically for emperor, they were also behind in tech, and with no short-term opportunity to catch up, as they were still in despotism, and had only two workers.

We sent a warrior to explore to the east, and quickly found some iron (see map). A settler was built and a city founded there, creating the opportunity down the road for immortals and knights.

Babylon sent out three settler teams through our territory, which was all the incentive we needed to attack. Archers ambushed them in 130 AD, picking up six workers. In the next turn we took Uruk, picking up a second luxury and possibly a second iron source once our borders expand.

We fought off a small feint in the south, and then settled into the serious bow-and-arrow conflict around Uruk and Antioch. The bowmen retook Uruk and snagged Antioch as well, but we got them back in two turns, as all of our archers were now funnelled northward. With the retaking of Uruk, we figured that Hammurabi would have had enough. We were tempted to take Nippur in the southeast, but didn't want to fight a holding action in the west for as long as it would take us to get archers there. (It'll still be there for the taking soon enough.) Hammurabi gave us republic for 60 gold, and we were at peace in 260AD.

Persia now had two additional cities, eight new workers, a second luxury and an iron source. We started building two more settlers, intended to settle near a third luxury patch northeast of New Zimbabwe, and near the horses southeast of that same city (see map). Yes, New Zimbabwe is also destined to join Persia.

Since researching CoL, we had set research at zero. With the money we saved, we paid for currency, picked up monotheism with my science bonus, and then paid about 16gpt for feudalism. Persia was now ready to research chivalry, which would give it a decisive military advantage against the two civs sandwiching it.

But first we needed to switch to a more efficient form of government. Persia wasn't quite ready to be a republic yet, but there was not enough reason to wait. Persia can barely afford such an advanced form of government - it needs not just temples, but marketplaces, and raising income is its immediate priority. With the luxury slider set at 10%, research is at zero - we will have to save some gold to actually afford to research chivalry in 40 turns! This may have been foolhardy, but we now have our five turns of anarchy behind us, and once we build an army of knights, an immortal will trigger a GA right as we build units and infrastructure, and Persia can seize control of its continent.

Cool, I'll wait a short while to see if someone wants to take over for the next twenty turns, before I assume power. ;) Great job on finding iron and successfully defeating Hammurabi. I was worried about his culture rating w/ newly captured cities.

I tried next.

I just concentrated to build some culture and expanded a little.

Build Sodon near the dye.
440AD Rush built temple in Gordium.
460AD Gordium flipped to Babylon:cry: Though Babylonian Nippur did not have any culture, but my city flipped to them right after I built Temple. What a pity.
490AD Contact to India. Sold communications with 5gpt for Engineering, Theology and Chivary.
But India built a city on the horse!
500AD Built Tyre.
530AD Game saved.

Now one settler is near Antioch to build city there, and the other is going to east of Sodon. I think we can build a city north of Bactra to cut Zulu territory into two pieces.
All other AIs already have Invention. So, immortals will be obsolete soon.

I hope Gordium will flip back some day.

When I was submitting first one, my Mac crashed. I am not sure submission had completed or not. Please use second one.

Pigumon, it would never have occurred to me that Gordium would flip. You'd think one of the cities I captured would be more likely to do it.

I tried uploading the saved game twice. But, neither time was I able to find it at http://civfanatics.net/upload2/

So, Txurce, I'm emailing you the save. I hope we can return to 300K attachments someday soon.

Update:

I played very conservatively, which was a good thing due to Zululand's massive army. Question: What happened to Nineveh & Akkad? Did we lose them in war or culture flip?

Highlights ---

540 AD - founded Sardis

560 AD - founded Samaria

600 AD - founded Hamadan

610 AD - bought invention from India

620 AD - trade set up w/ Babylon

680 AD - established embassies w/ Zululand & India

690 AD - Zululand declares war on Babylon

720 AD - bought gunpowder from India (world map & 270 gold)

730 AD - END

I set research que for democracy. Also, I spent some time building Immortals. I resisted the urge to buy monarchy and build an invasion force.

Dojoboy, I'll start the game in a day or two. It sounds like we're in good shape. However, given the slight difference between republic and democracy, and the long Persian period of anarchy, I won't bother researching democracy (unless you're well into it).

The period between 730 and 930AD was an interim one - you guys will get to have all the fun. The changes I made were to:

1) cease Immortals building, as they were already outdated.

2) build temples and then marketplaces everywhere, as you can't grow without them in republic.

3) buy education then research music theory, to have a shot at Bach's.

Also of note:

1) Leo's was built by someone almost immediately, and I couldn't switch to a palace prebuild for Bach's because it was being built in the capital, so I built a university, and then cannons for upgrade in a post-rr defense. (There's nothing else to do in the capital except build defensive units, and I have an aversion to them.)

2) I bought chemistry and metallurgy from the Zulus, then waited to build some marketplaces to afford researching miltary tradition. MT will be available halfway through the next round.

3) I lined up my Immortals and archers to attack the Indian cities (I neglected to provide them with pike cover, but I doubt the Indians have many offensive units). These include Kohlhapur - essential to our future because it has horses - and Tyre, which flipped to India. India has at least one musket and an elephant, but won't be able to defend them. (Galleys don't cut it for viable reinforcements.)

In the meantime, Babylon and the Zulus fought a long war to a virtual standstill - the Zulus picked up one Babylonian city. Typically, the Zulus allied with India just before declaring peace. So as soon as our deal for education expired, I allied with Babylon against India for 75 gold, and attacked one longbowman with an Immortal, starting our GA.

This was in my last turn. The war against India should be over quickly. Bach's should be built in 12 turns (we're losing food reserves in the wonder city, but it'll last long enough). The GA should get the Persian infrastructure into decent shape, as well as speed the start of a cavalry buildup. By the time Pigumon completes the GA, Dojoboy should have a viable attack force to begin the domination of our continent.

Or at least that's how I see it, from my twenty turns of rule.

Dojoboy, I think Nineveh and Akkad have always belonged to Babylon. Look at the early map you posted. Pigumon and I can only take blame for one city flipping each.

Hmm, I think you're right. What happened is I continued to play the game after I posted a save in the thread. My mistake, sorry. Good job during your turns. Did you email it to Piguman? I hope I don't let the team down!

Good job, both.

I like to have my turn with GA. Thanks!

Txurce, please post saved game here. I have now no problem downloading it and someone may be interested in and want to join.
