Suing for the Slave Trade!!!!!!!

Not to long ago I remember reading the newspaper "The Observer"; In the newspaper there was a piece about Black Americans suing the American governments and companies that were around 150 years ago for the Slave trade. I can't remember the amount, but it was huge figure. I also read to my amazement that the same group who want to sue in America might try to sue other former slave owning nations; Like Britain, Portugal, Spain, France, etc.. I think this was supported by the racist organisation, "The Nation of Islam".

I found absolutely a dreadful idea, as it opens a whole pandora's box of law. Giving that every nation/civilisation/empire has practiced slavery in some shape or form. The word "slave" actually comes from the word "Slav", as before the African slaves, Eastern Europe was a common place for slaves to come from.

I also found it stupid as ultimately the tax payer will have to pay. Giving that every legal national/civilian/subject has to pay tax ultimately they're taxing themselves. Also what about people recently moved there after slavery was abolished? What about people who's ancestors were exclusively Working Class, so they couldn't afford to own slaves?

Another reason I found it stupid was, that if the Nation of Islam was supporting the legal action then it is a little hypocritical as it took the British to abolish slavery in their holy land in 1919. Before then the Imam's of Arabia were supporting slavery.

Is this stupid, STUPID idea still going ahead?

Redtom, you need to post topics to the corect forums. You are NOT a newbie and know the rules. Expect to get a 3 day ban next time...

The lawsuits have no chance, you need an injured party for such a suit, so either produce a LIVE slave and someone ALIVE whom enslaved them, or you have no case.

Haven't we already had a thread about it this week?

If I should be wrong, I'll just second AoA's opinion, as that is how it is...

Hitro,

I agree, this has already been discussed.
But that can be said of a lot of subjects.

Fortunately I see that there is much more understanding for each other (especially Americans and Europeans) after a few weeks.
So therefore I don't think it's bad if certain subjects are repeated.

This weekend was a good one for the environmental issue. I have the feeling that the American and European posters do understand each other much better on this subject then a few weeks ago.

Hope that the good debates will be continued. :)

Sorry, lack of sleep, I'm really really sorry

I started a thread about this last week. There wasn't too much disagreement about the subject. Everyone seemed to be against reparations for many of the reasons listed above.

Everybodies ancestors suffered, and we can't prove how much, and who is to blame.

Agreed, by the same logic they are using, I could sue the Russian government for atrocities against ancestors of mine that I never even met. I won't bother that's for certain.

Edit: And thing that really makes me sick about the whole thing, the plaintiffs are trying to profit from the suffering of other people.

That's the worst thing about it. They don't even care about those peoples, they just want the money and this is really sad.

That everyone here, no matter what their underlying ideology, can see through the smokescreen around this issue is very heartening.

Amen, Switch. I think this whole reparations thing is rather ludicrous, although I can understand why some people want reparations. African slavery was the only form of slavery that was an institution.

Let's not give them money, let's give them land.

Start with the closed landfill on Staten Island ;)

Haiti? Too small. I was thinking more along the lines of.......Peru.

EDIT: Wait, I want Brazil. The reparations people can have the Andes.

How about Sierra Leone? I hear Freetown's real estate business is really booming.

They doubled the amount of houses to two, and built a new tin shack.

Sierra Leone......hmm.........yeah......

Have Darkshade's boys ship 'em there in a tugboat.

Even the tugboats of His Darkness' mighty navy are not available for such a task. Malcontents are not to be catered to in the slightest. If they show even the slightest sign of discontent, then perhaps a tug could tow them to the middle of the Atlantic and they could help test H.E.S. Darkshade's 26" guns. Other than that, they will have no contact with the glorious fleet of Darkshade's Fascist Empire.

The Minister for Women and other Alien Races has spoken.
