Suleiman's Harem

1838 AD:

army-mini.gif
Some rather bad news... De Gaulle has come back with another large stack of attackers:

suleiman058.jpg

suleiman-mini.gif
Dang it! How many troops does the dude have? Alright. Let's cross our fingers and hope for the best...

The return key is pressed, and France attacks again.

suleiman-mini.gif
What's the damage? Did we lose?
army-mini.gif
Wonsan is still ours, but the results of the battle aren't very pleasing.
suleiman-mini.gif
Hit me.
army-mini.gif
One French cavalry has withdrawn, and four of his Riflemen died. On the other hand, 4 of our Cavalry have perished, so has the Cuirassier and two Janissaries.
suleiman-mini.gif
Dang. So it's De Gaulle: 10, Suleiman: 45, huh? He's catching up, the [BLEEP]!

1840 AD:

domestic-mini.gif
YAY! Michel de Ruyter has been born in Istanbul!
suleiman-mini.gif
Have him build an Academy in Pusan. We need every advantage we can possibly get!
army-mini.gif
Meanwhile...

suleiman059.jpg

army-mini.gif
We have liberated Elephantine!

suleiman060.jpg

suleiman-mini.gif
WOOT! Use the earnings to upgrade a Janissary in Wonsan!
army-mini.gif
Shall we head towards Egypt's last city and take it as well?
suleiman-mini.gif
Heck no! If we eliminate Hatty, it would only allow Suryavarman to create a colony and alleviate his maintenance costs! We're done with Egypt... forever!

The return key is pressed, and you can imagine what France does...

suleiman-mini.gif
What's the news on the latest attack?
army-mini.gif
Two French Cavalry have wihdrawn, two more were killed, three of their Riflemen died while one of ours heroically sacrificed himself.
suleiman-mini.gif
We still lead 50 to 11, though. Not half bad, not half bad.

1842 AD:

army-mini.gif
France has attacked again, and this time, they lost a Rifleman, and out of three Cavalries, two died and one withdrew. We, on the other hand, suffered no losses.
suleiman-mini.gif
Excellent! We lead 53 to 11! We... Hold on, the Visual Phone is ringing...

suleiman-mini.gif
Hello? I'm busy with a war, here!
cyrus-mini.gif
Greetings, Suleiman! It's always trading time, and war time is the best time of all to be trading!
suleiman-mini.gif
Alright. What have you got for me?
cyrus-mini.gif
How would you like my Military Science and 80 gold for your Communism?
suleiman-mini.gif
That's pretty advantageous to you, buddy.
cyrus-mini.gif
Hey. Your friends don't have any technologies they can trade to you. I'm the only one. If you want to modernize, I'm your only option!
suleiman-mini.gif
~sigh~ Fine, deal. Farewell.

Suleiman dials the VP...

gaulle-mini.gif
yes?
suleiman-mini.gif
Are you tired of having your Stacks die for absolutely nothing, yet? You don't even have any troops left, sucka!
gaulle-mini.gif
Is that what you erroneously believe?
suleiman-mini.gif
So, what will you give me for peace, [BLEEP]?
gaulle-mini.gif
Again, you're way off target. Just give me Wonsan and we'll call it even.
suleiman-mini.gif
Do you realize that Edirne alone trains troops faster than your pitiful stacks can kill?
gaulle-mini.gif
Do you realize that I possess the equivalent of five Edirnes dedicated to training troops? And that all of my Cities contribute to the war efforts? I can organize stacks faster than you can defend. It's just a question of time. Or, you could simply give me Wonsan.
suleiman-mini.gif
Dream on, [BLEEP]!

1848 AD:

army-mini.gif
A single French Cavalry has attacked Wonsan, and has withdrawn from combat.
foreign-mini.gif
Meanwhile, Isabella has negociated peace with De Gaulle and Hatshepsut.
suleiman-mini.gif
Hmm.

As Suleiman pressed "return"...

army-mini.gif
We've been attacked in Wonsan!
suleiman-mini.gif
Dang it! I forgot to look for a stack before pressing the return key! How bad is it?
army-mini.gif
We have lost two Riflemen, but... France has lost 2 Trebuchets, 3 Cavalries, and 2 Riflemen. Two Cavalries have withdrawn, creating a small stack of injured units nearby.
suleiman-mini.gif
De Gaulle: 13, Suleiman: 60, is that right?
army-mini.gif
Correct, my dear Sultan.

1850 AD:

suleiman-mini.gif
Use our Cavalries to finish off that stack of injured units!

suleiman061.jpg

army-mini.gif
We have killed an additional 4 French Cavalries.
suleiman-mini.gif
Excellent. Let's see if I changed De Gaulle's position...

Suleiman dials the VP...

gaulle-mini.gif
Yes?
suleiman-mini.gif
How much will you give me for peace now, [BLEEP]?
gaulle-mini.gif
~sigh~ Will 40 gold please you?
suleiman-mini.gif
Yes! It will! But let me ask you this: Who's yo dadday?
gaulle-mini.gif
~sigh~ You are.
suleiman-mini.gif
What was that?
gaulle-mini.gif
I said: you're my daddy.
suleiman-mini.gif
That's right, [BLEEP], and you better remember it! Here's to not seeing you later!

Yup. And we also know neither Elizabeth or Victoria will make it into the game since Churchill did. ;)

Anyhow...

Where was I?

Oh, yes.

1860 AD:

suleiman-mini.gif
Hello?
surya-mini.gif
Hey, pal!
suleiman-mini.gif
Ghaah!
surya-mini.gif
Give me Communism! That's what friendship's all about, right?
suleiman-mini.gif
No, that is the exact opposite of what friendship is.
surya-mini.gif
So... what... you're not giving it to me?
suleiman-mini.gif
You're quite perceptive. However, I'll take some of your Dye for some of my Corn.
surya-mini.gif
Yeah. OK. I can do that.
suleiman-mini.gif
Listen, I'd stay and chat, but your face makes my eyes bleed, so... you know... See ya later!

1864 AD:

domestic-mini.gif
Yay! The Great Engineer known as Alexander Graham Bell has been born in Istanbul!
suleiman-mini.gif
Groovy! I'm an impatient guy, and I want the Iron Works right now. I know it's just a National Wonder and all, but I want it.
domestic-mini.gif
OK!

suleiman062.jpg

1866 AD:

Don't let the surprise make you jump too high: The Visual Phone Rings.

suleiman-mini.gif
What?
izzy-mini.gif
You shall give me Gunpowder, and you shall give it to me now!
suleiman-mini.gif
No. Go away, pesky Izzy!

domestic-mini.gif
We have discovered Rocketry!
suleiman-mini.gif
Yeah! Have Istanbul start the Apollo Program! I mean... I'm obviously not going to win by Domination or Conquest, I'm not allowed to win Culturally, and Diplomatic Victory is turned off. That leaves but one option! Let's get on that one option!

1868 AD:

foreign-mini.gif
Suryavarman has declared war on Isabella.
suleiman-mini.gif
How very surprising. Let's trade with him!

Suleiman dials...

surya-mini.gif
Me busy?
suleiman-mini.gif
I'll make it quick. You give me Steam Power, and I'll give you Biology and 50 gold.
surya-mini.gif
Deal.
suleiman-mini.gif
Thanks, bye!

Suleiman dials again...

suleiman-mini.gif
Boudica, my love!
boudica-mini.gif
Uh-oh...
suleiman-mini.gif
How about a defense pact?
boudica-mini2.gif
Why?
suleiman-mini.gif
You have assets worth protecting.
boudica-mini.gif
Don't you usually do that sort of thing with Catherine?
suleiman-mini.gif
Sure, she might be stronger... but I have about fifteen readerswho tell me everyday that I shouldn't trust her.
boudica-mini.gif
Alright, then.
suleiman-mini.gif
Groovy! See ya, Boubica!

1884 AD:

foreign-mini.gif
Manny-bunny! Boudica has declared war on Isabella, thus Churchill, now her Vassal, follows suit.
suleiman-mini.gif
That cancels our defense pact, right?
foreign-mini.gif
Yup.
suleiman-mini.gif
Ah well, happens.

1886 AD:

foreign-mini.gif
And now, Boudica has captured the Spanish City of Prerup (Spelling might be wrong).
suleiman-mini.gif
I'll send her a congratulatory bouquet of spring blooms.

1892 AD:

foreign-mini.gif
The Spanish City of Salamanca has been captured by the Khmer.
suleiman-mini.gif
Whatever.

1896 AD:

hatty-mini.gif
Suleiman! Have Open Borders with me!
suleiman-mini.gif
That would be a pointless waste of time, Hatty. Farewell.

1898 AD:

foreign-mini.gif
We have achieved World Peace. Since Isabella became Suryavarman's vassal, she has made peace with her numerous enemies.
suleiman-mini.gif
Don't care. I am now an automaton. Must... Press... Return...

1903 AD:

cathy-mini2.gif
Suleiman, my dear friend!
suleiman-mini.gif
Cathy, my lovely!
cathy-mini.gif
You give me Corporations, and I give you 50 gold!
suleiman-mini.gif
Farewell.

1905 AD:

The VP rings...

cyrus-mini.gif
Suleiman! That guy I can trade with!
suleiman-mini.gif
What is it?
cyrus-mini.gif
Gimme Artillery!
suleiman-mini.gif
No.
cyrus-mini.gif
Keep in mind that if you help me catch you up in technology, trading science with each other will be easier, and we'll both benefit!
suleiman-mini.gif
And that makes some kind of logical sense, in that head of yours?
cyrus-mini.gif
Why, of course!
suleiman-mini.gif
Farewell, Cyrus.

Suleiman dials the VP

surya-mini.gif
Yes? Who is it? I can't see the screen, a big hand is blocking it from your side.
suleiman-mini.gif
I know. I've noticed I can chat with you more comfortably that way. Now, I only need to endure your squeaky voice.
surya-mini.gif
What is it?
suleiman-mini.gif
Give me Democracy, and I'll hand over 80 gold and Communism.
surya-mini.gif
OK!
suleiman-mini.gif
Thanks, buddy!

domestic-mini.gif
Democracy allows for some new civics!
suleiman-mini.gif
I always forget to revolt... Let's do it now and adopt: Universal Suffrage, Free Speech, Emancipation, Free Market, and Free Religion!
domestic-mini.gif
Right away!

And thus... Suleiman makes the grievous mistake of adopting Free Religion.

... to be continued... In the next post called:

SULEIMAN IS A CHEATING SCUMBAG!

...

Yes.
Suleiman is a Cheating Scumbag.

Why?
Well, we'll have to jump to another story telling format to get the picture.

We're now in 1912.
I give Catherine a call, and, while her back is turned, the way it is every single time you begin talks with her, I stab a knife straight into her back and declare war.

If you browse through the more recent screenshots, the farther along the war with De Gaulle goes, Russia's culture become more and more invasive.
In a strategic move you don't see Catherine pull out very often, the wily little seductress is heading straight for a Cultural Victory. Moscow and Novgorod are churning out huge amounts of Culture. While her 3rd city isn't that culturally strong, it's still good enough to hope for a very late game Cultural victory.
Of course, I'm not allowed to win that way. So, I come to the conclusion that I can't fight culture against culture... I have to eliminate her. Or, at least, take Moscow, Novgorod, Seoul and possibly raze Pyongyang.

With that in mind, I'd been hoarding huge stacks of Artillery ever since I got the tech, then proceeded to make more stacks of SAM Batteries, the best "offensive" unit available at that time. With two +10% Strength each, they'd do the job, anyways. Cathy was still in love with her Cossacks.

But, evidently, I'm stupid.
You likely have noticed that a long time ago already.

I declare war, then quickly notice that Catherine had a defensive pact with Boudica, and I had simply been too moronic to even check.
So now, I'm at war with my two loveliest neighbors... and Churchill. Though, we can all agree, he doesn't matter.

"I can take 'em," I say, "it'll just make a better story."

As planned, I take both Seoul and Pyongyang in 1913. The latter, I raze. It has always annoyed me since the beginning. Then, I fortify in Seoul and Ankara, and patiently wait for Catherine to kill off all of the Cossacks in futile attacks (and she pretty much indulges me).
Meanwhile, Boudica sends a huge stack of mostly outdated units towards Edirne. The latter city produces a unit per turn, and thus, I easily destroy her stack with a few sacrificial Artillery, some SAM Batteries and brand spankin' new Infantries, now finally available.

However, in 1917, De Gaulle and Hatshepsut declare war on me again... and I'm already busy on two fronts. I easily handle the first wave of attack, and start to grow confident.
"OMG" I scream in glee, "this is gonna be awesome, epic storytelling!"

Then, I manage to negociate peace with Boudica, and she gives me well over 500 gold for it. I use that cash to upgrade as many units as I can.

Hatshepsut makes a simply pathetic attempt to reclaim Elephantine, which is most easily thwarted.

Then, Cyrus declares war on me.

"Pfft!" I figure, "Cyrus is a lamb," He'll not do any damage!

Still. As a precaution, I negociate peace with Catherine. I don't get that much money out of the deal since her coffers are pretty empty.

And when I see De Gaulle's stack arrive, I'm suddenly overjoyed at my decision. It's a monster. I'm pretty sure he could have occupied every single land tile in the world with one infantry each. Even more alarming is the preposterously large stack of Trebuchets. (While I beelined to Artillery and Rocketry, De Gaulle invested everything he had to get Infantry, obviously).

He attacks Wonsan. In the same turn, he has enough Trebuchets to get the defenses back to 0% and causes enough collateral damage that he doesn't lose a single Infantry unit in the taking of Wonsan, even though it was well garrisoned. He then moves towards Pusan, capturing it just as easily a few turns later.

Meanwhile, Cyrus' gigantic Stack arrives next to Seoul and he easily takes it. He also makes an attempt at capturing Elephantine, but fails for lack of troops since he had obviously sent everything he had to Seoul.

Then, Suryavarman and his Vassal, Isabella, declare war on me. The fact that we no longer shared a religion no doubt helped.

I had been stubborn so far, but I finally stop building the Apollo Program in Istanbul to churn out extra military. (Yeah... I know... don't say it)

De Gaulle takes Pusan, Catherine declares war and takes Ankara, and Boudica (with Churchill) does the same, severely damaging Istanbul's garrison. That makes it quite easy for Suryavarman to grab my Capital. Meanwhile, De Gaulle's never ending stack of Infantrymen is besieging Edirne.

The [illegitimate offsprings] are dogpiling me into oblivion.

At this point, I indulge in constructive activities like;
- hurling empty soda cans at the walls;
- screaming various insults in French, English, and Gibberish at the screen;
- waking up my downstairs neighbor by jumping up and down in futile fits of rage;
- and furiously deleting save files and screenshots while grumbling things like "[Physical act of reproduction] this [bodily waste]!"

Now, since those tragic events, a day or two have passed. My composure finally regained, I come to the conclusion that, really, I should finish the game... you know... for the enjoyment of readers.
I begin to search for whatever I could recuperate. The Saves are gone, and so are the screen shots from 1912 and later. Which is too bad since I worked hard on all sorts of pictures, detailing precisely my evil plans of conquest.
However, in my search, I notice that the date of the last Gilgamesh game is wrong; decidedly too recent. I open it... it's the Suleiman game, in 1912, right before I declare war on Catherine.

So... well.

Though we can all agree I have in fact lost this game, I can at least finish the story with another file... and possibly a different ending.
Though probably not. I had been creating units non-stop (save for the AProg. in Istanbul), yet, if De Gaulle attacks, and I expect he will still do that in 1917 approximatively, I don't stand a chance. That was an absolutely inhuman quantity of units he had...

But anyways... this time, no matter what happens, I will not quit the game and destroy my work in righteous anger.
I will not declare war on Catherine, but will instead attempt to fight culture with culture - all without winning culturally.
I will also try to convert back to Buddhism asap so Catherine, Boudica and Suryavarman will instead agree to defense pacts with me.
Then, and only then, do we stand a chance of winning against Charles de Gaulle.

While, usually I'm much, much further ahead in the game than what I describe in my posts... this time, for the first time, I'm in 1912 - this story thread is now in 1912, and I have not played yet.
So, for once, you could give advice and opinions, and I'll actually, concretely, be able to use your counsel in the game.

Don't really have any screens to help ya, though.

In any case...

... Suleiman's Harem: Alternate Ending will continue... as soon as it is played!

Aw that sucks. Diplomacy was one of my important lessons in going up to Monarch: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=213950

And I have never forgotten it. When you have tech parity and a major-league army, the only way you can lose is via massive dogpile or some weird thing like diplo victory or cultural victory. I mean, sheesh, when even pacifist Cyrus is dogpiling on you, you know you look weak to the AI.

If there is some hope left, I would sue for peace immediately even if it means throwing a city at someone. Build up a major military force and then pick off the weakest AI; war remains the thing that the AI is worst at, so if you can knock someone out quickly and sue for peace quickly, you can double your empire size or more and that will give you enough oomph to take on someone else after healing and having your new cities come out of revolt. Also see if you can bribe someone to attack a nemesis. Just my 2 cents; I don't know the state of the tech and world and how close others are to Space or Diplo or Cultural vic.

Some thoughts (and I've really enjoyed the series so far):

Build machine guns - they are immune to collateral damage and kill attacking infantry quite effectively.

Start a war if you can. Almost any war will do. Someone to attack Catherine or Boudica. Boudica to attack someone else. De Gualle to attack anyone.

If you can't start a war, can you close some borders?

If you are in a war, stop building Apollo - you just don't have enough cities to play builder and warmonger at the same time.

If culture from Catherine is the problem, consider building a lot of spies and sabotaging her towns in the cities putting cultural pressure on you - that will kill her culture growth fairly effectively. Poison her well (you could probably find some good dialog in that...)

Stalker I don't think I've ever seen you write a post that I've disagreed with. :)

You know, back when I was kind of noobish at Civ (my Civ 2 days), one of my favorite games I ever played was as the English on the world map. I was being peaceful and nice to everyone up until I had boats that could make sea voyages, then out of seemingly nowhere the Russians decide it's time for me to die and capture all of my European and British Isles cities. All I had left was a brand new colony I had started in South America. Nowadays I would just quit the second that happened, but at the time I really enjoyed coming back from the brink of defeat and stabilizing myself. I eventually ended up allied with the Sioux, crossed back over the Atlantic, and took the British Isles back. I never managed to get mainland Europe back, and that certainly wouldn't be possible in Civ 4 (as the AI probably would have coup de grace'd my colonial presence and certainly wouldn't let me get back to tech parity), but it was fun nonetheless.

Sometimes I lament how good AI has become, haha.

I know it's off-topic, but I've been playing a game dealing with Shaka's incredible military and Huayna Capac running off for a Culture Victory. The Apostolic Palace and its Defense Pact resolution are not helping matters, but after a couple world wars, I have salvaged a position with an ally against the now whittled-down Shaka-stack (still ~40 units on a Standard map with high water, a mighty force to contend with). The key is to always have a friend in these wars...and I've played the junior partner for centuries. It's the modern era, and I'm still running Organized Religion and Confucianism--Brennus's favored Civic and State Religion so I have +23 relations with him.

Well, I'm giving you a thumbs-up for the effort and the storytelling, no matter what happens. This is one of the greatest stories I've ever read on these forums (the only one I can think of that compares is "Beyond Sid" from Civ3, for its shear insanity). :D It's almost sad you deleted all the screenshots and stuff--even a loss may have been entertaining, if written well.

From what I can tell, the best advice is to keep your state religion, and get in on that juicy Boudica-Catherine defense pact (you signed one with Boudica that she broke, didn't she?). Then, run for a Space Race as fast as you can, hopefully beating Catherine out. I don't know where she is in terms of culture, but you can calculate it out by approximating her culture growth for all three leading cities between two turns. See how long you have until she wins, and if it is a decently long time (I play Epic, I don't know what speed your game is in), you may stand a good chance of getting to space. Although the timing for your space ship to land is a new factor I'm not used to accounting for...

All good ideas as well. It looks like we all wrote and posted together. :)

Ah!
Some real good ideas, guys!

The Machine Gun is certainly a unit I never get to use. Everytime I've built some, I have never needed them. And when I didn't, it turned out that I was involved in wars where counter-attacking was a better strategy.

Sabotaging Catherine is another appealing idea, mostly because it's something I have yet to explore under BTS. It's just a hassle and not worth bothering with in most games I play, but in this case... It might just be what I need! (Or a good complement, anyways).

Otherwise, I do plan on returning to Buddhism ASAP to sign some defense pacts.

I will have to check if any wars can be stimulated (or trades stopped), but from memory, it wasn't an option last time I checked.
Almost everyone was willing to war against Isabella, but since she became Suryavarman's vassal, things have changed.

Unlucky Flouzemaker.

Chin up man, I reckon you'll be able to turn it around in the ALTERNATE ENDING!!!
