Superheroes!

I'm still enjoying Gotham as a whole. So I'll watch when the series is broadcast. Which I hear won't be until spring.

I don't really like Deborah Ann Woll. Or maybe it's just the character. So far S3 of Daredevil isn't knocking my socks off.

Six Billion Dollar Man hasn't kept up with inflation. But it wasn't all that good the first time through, when it was at least somewhat novel. Now, not interested.

Right, how many cyborgs have we seen in popular fiction, by now? It's not like you couldn't make a cool movie or series based on Steve Austin today, but the premise alone is hardly worth getting out of bed for. I used to have Martin Caidin's 1972 novel, but I don't remember much about it. It might have been innovative in '72. There was a remake of Robocop a couple of years ago, but I didn't even bother to watch it, because the trailers didn't suggest that it had any unique spin on the archetype.

The book was reasonably realistic - Steve Austin had no superpowers. He couldn't run fast or see far away. His false eye was a camera (that used film!). His legs were self-powered with storage compartments, so his endurance was increased and he could hide air tanks in the legs. More secret-agent-like than superhero-like.

I liked The Six Million Dollar Man when I was a kid, but I rarely got to watch it because it was on at 8:00 - past my bed time. It is on in reruns now, but I don't really have any desire to watch now.

  • Supergirl continues to be as subtle as a fire truck in a hurry, and despite feeling kind of concussed by the end of every episode, I'm still enjoying it. This show must send political conservatives into a spittle-flying rage (which might be partly why I'm enjoying it, I have to admit  ).

A fire truck in a hurry to reach your back yard that opted for the short cut through the living room, maybe. But I agree; the people who are really getting hit square with the sledgehammer are people that I wouldn't generally mind taking a swing at myself, so it's okay that every episode catches me with at least a couple flailing backswings and rebounds.

I couldn't get through the recent episode of The Flash. I don't know if it was a bad episode, I think I'd just reached my limit, like when you eat one mouthful too many and suddenly feel ill.

The cicada guy with the damping field power is a bit much to stomach. I mean, just shoot him and get it over with.

They did ask about non-powered people, and future-Flash-girl said that Green Arrow had also failed to bring him in. But she also said that events were already diverging from what she remembered of history. I didn't finish the ep, though, so I'm not sure what happened or if anything was resolved.

I get the whole "Flash is a good guy" bit, but, seriously, how many times do you run into the known damping field and get punched in the face? Run to nearest gun store, run back with sniper rifle, problem solved.

Finished Daredevil S3. Was pretty good. Left a lot of room for S4, should Netflix no ax this as well.

Another episode of Supergirl, another fire truck crashing through the living room. They are now running ad spots touting The CW as the network of diversity, and it's pretty clear that Supergirl is their standard bearer, ride or die. I think tonight I got hit, not with backswing and ricochets, but possibly as the target of their sledgehammering. The evolution of a fascist provided food for thought, for those willing to have it shoved down their throats.

This episode reminded me so much of a PG-rated homage to American History X that I was moved to look that film up, and it turns out that today is its 20th anniversary. Maybe the similarity was more than a coincidence?

Sam and Bucky are evidently next to get a mini-series on the Disney streaming service. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan haven't signed on the dotted line yet, but all the websites seem to be treating that as a formality. I think they're a good choice. They seemed to have some chemistry in Civil War.

Another episode of The Life and Times of Barry Allen; exploring the new and interesting world of Barry as dad to a teenager without the qualifying experiences of having raised the kid. Oh, and there was some good Flash type heroing stuff too, but as usual it was sort of tangential to the story.

I haven't seen it yet, but I agree that Nora really comes across as a teenager. I think the actress is, like, 32 irl, but she's so cute and bubbly she seems 15 years younger.

Yeah, I think the character is supposed to be 25, but apparently in speed force years that's more like sixteen.

On the superhero weirdness front this episode does introduce a new threat concept that is pretty cool. Definitely worth catching just as a reference point for what will likely be a significant fraction of future plot lines.

Spoiler :
Not just meta human threats, now we have to deal with META TECH!!!!

If I thought they were really building up to an adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths across all of the shows, I'd be giddy, but 2024 is just too far away. [...] The Monitor hasn't been introduced yet, though, so you'd have to get on that.
Boom.

This storyline with Supergirl stuck in the containment suit makes me wonder if something was going on with Melissa Benoist. It's the kind of thing a production might do if the actress was pregnant and showing, or injured, or otherwise unable to be on-set.

Yeah, that's an interesting point. They had her out of the suit by the end of the episode though, and it would be tough to get her back in smoothly, so whatever the problem it has to be short term.
