Tactics is where it's at.

I thought of a good tactic, not only for Civ, but for life in general:

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

I enjoyed your article . Seems to me you may well be a fan of Sun' Tzu. I do have a ? for you ,in game tactics how does one live off the land-(CIV IV?)

To live off your opponent's land in CIV-raze cities and tile improvements to fund deficit research/unit expenses. Very effective as a warmonger going for conquest/domination victories.

I like the advice. Trying to get you to play the game as you would if you were a general in real life. It makes the game more fun. -goobz

This is a good point. Many articles on here use terms such as "SE" "TE" ect. and ramble on and on. If i was a kid that really liked this game and history and i found this site and read any of that crap i would leave and never come back.
However if i read one of Earth-god's quatrains it would open up discussion and possibility.
Look at the length of articles of some of the attacks on his article...one thing about know-it-alls -they tend to get all worked up.
What are you going to prove by attacking everyone instead of trying to justify your post? Kaloioannis
I like how he stands up for self-expression -and perhaps for others who may not want to post because of the hostile linear nazi thinkers.

Standing up for self-expression? Is that whats he's doing? Really? Are you sure?:mischief:

CIV is a game. We discuss it in these forums. If you'd like to discuss real life military tactics, I'm sure there's a forum for that elsewhere. Don't go to McDonald's looking to buy a used car, they'll only sell you a cheeseburger with fries. :goodjob:

Going back to the fast food analogy, if you walk into McDonald's and order a car you'll get some odd looks. You'll probably even get a few snickers. If you go on and on and start insulting people you may even get the cops called on you. Does that make all the people there hostile linear Nazi thinkers? Maybe they all just came there for burgers?

Also, nobody can take you seriously (or even understand you) when you type like this:
Please notr edit, quote, multi. I see no ARTICALS ONLY.EarthGod_out!

This thread has been moved out of the articles fourm so it no longer has to be of that calibre. Articles are of course supposed to involve a lot of effort MrCynical - elitist/condescending

Yes, unless you meet the criterea as dictated by some -who are not moderators?- you can't post in certain areas.

Take the critics with a grain of salt, who knows what people will learn from ANY article you post. - Earth-God ...sound... humane

Use of the word "I" in a typical MrCynical retort............ 12+ average
Use of the word "I" in a typical Earth-God quatrain.................4 at most
many without the word at all.

And i could make no sense out of a false analogy to a hamburger joint.

Well, you see, articles usually contain paragraphs, well thought out ideas, and useful information.

While this statement is true, it is irrelevant.

I once again fail to see the relevancy in this, but irrelevancy seems to be the common theme in this "article".

Deadal..."well thought out ideas, and useful information."

"Civ is a game"
"if you walk into McDonald's and order a car you'll get some odd looks."

this is what is considered relevant? as oppossed to ...

A statement open to interpretation based on the intelligence of the reader- leading one to speculate that for all the edits, quotes, and multi-posts in the retorts there are no articles about the subject at hand- only attacks.

I hope you are joking since i don't see that many linear nazi thinkers in here. Actually their absence makes this thread so funny :D

Face it man, the OP has posted nothing that has any relevance to the game. Tactics are useful but only when you are facing a human. A computer can't be tricked because he has no brains, it executes commands lines. Can you trick an equation? And if you could, would you brag about it?

But i don't see the relevance of tactics in civ where most people play single player games. Yeah you can wager about the presence of terrain for example but there is no difference between hills marked "no 1" and hills "no 200", all hills are the same, which is absolutely untrue tactically and strategically.
Another part is that the computer already takes the factor into account by calculating it's chances. Is it using tactics? Nope!

BTW have you seen any bonus for units attacking downhill in the game? ;)
I assure you that this is a most decisive tactical factor that has been (like numerous others) ommited from the game.

My guess is that if you want tactics, please play total war (or sth similar) and enjoy yourself. :)

Well the strategy articles forum is intended for articles of a certain level of quality (ultimately dictated by the moderators - ordinary users just indicate whether an article is useful and whether it merits that place). The current rating and content of this thread does rather indicate its value as an article though.

Condescending - not really, and outright ridicule seems to be more common from other people.

Elitist - Your point? The articles forum is for the "elite" of posts on strategy.

Not entirely sure if you're joking here - you've actually bothered to count through the words of all these posts?

Out of sheer boredom, this response contains no instances of the pronoun you seem to be objecting to.

The little things is where it all starts. 1 soldier +4 solider =1 squad etc... all the way up to an entire Army. That same concept should be how you plan your tactics. one tactic+1 =1 etc... and you have formed your strategy. Any ideas you come up with can be useful tactics. You would be well off if you researched them before trying to implement them. Always have tactics you can fallback on. Your grand strategy depends you are prepared for ANY tactic the enemy may throw at you.

Do what you want to do. Critics will always be there to do what they do, critize their own preconcived thoughts on a given topic. Think of them (most not all ) AS the Hollywood scandal papers, rags,in general the ever present press. After awhile they become trite, yet you can still gain knowldge from their articles. That said, remember knowldge is power. Take the critics with a grain of salt, who knows what people will learn from ANY article you post.

Oh. Hello Tom Cruise :goodjob:

Amazing, just amazing. EarthGod is a genious, he really is.

Alas, I can only just BEGIN to be where his genious lies, as he, and only he, can summerise ALL of the game to a mere 4 sentances. A mere shadow of him, I am, as I must make 3 paragraphs to summerise all wisdom that has been in here.

To win in war, you must possess two things, numbers, and technology. An army of OVERWHELMING numbers will OVERWHELM a small, elite army. An army of extreme TECHNOLOGY with extremely destroy a large, PRIMATIVE army. To get these two things, you must possess two important things. BEAKERS, and HAMMERS. The more BEAKERS you have, the more technology you gather, so you must get as much BEAKERS as possible, and that is made by increasing the TECHNOLOGY slider, as beakers EQUALS technology. ALAS, you must not increase it TOO much, hear me, as that will cause you to lose NUMBERS in your army. TACTICS will allow you to find a balance. 1 beaker plus 1 beaker equals 2 beakers, and thus all BEAKERS will go towards your cause!! Gather them faster than your enemies!

To get HAMMERS, you must build MINES, and WORKSHOPS, but ALAS, do not build TOO MANY, as that will mean you will lose TECHNOLOGY. Doing these things will allow you to beat ANY adversary, as an army of tanks will destroy a smaller army of macemen. WONDERS are powerful, they give you gold, beakers, and hammers. Get all of them, as IF you don't, the ENEMY will get them. Build them ALL, but ALAS, again, use TACTICS to find a balance, as building too many will make you lose NUMBERS. If you build all the wonders, and have more MILITARY and BEAKERS than EVERYONE ELSE, you will win, even on the hardest level. The game of Civ IV uses TACTICS to balance the things, like a see-saw, but also NOT! It is a 5 SIDED seesaw, where you must also balance BEAKERS (which you must get as much as possible), HAMMERS (which you must get as much as possible), GOLD (which you must get as much as possible), WONDERS (which you must get as much as possible), and TACTICS (which you must get as much as possible).

But, do not expect to find TACTICS on these forums, as these FORUMS are full of nazi-loving dog-eating, non-cubes who DO NOT know the MEANING of tactics. They have ARTICLES on tactics, but TACTICS is not something you LEARN, it is something you GET. These people on the FORUMS don't have win-loss ratios, and don't ADVERTISE them!! But, your Win:loss ratio is ALL IMPORTANT, you must get it AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE, you must get as MUCH AS POSSIBLE, by getting GOLD, HAMMERS, BEAKERS, and WONDERS! And most of all TACTICS!!! What is any number divided by 0? It is HUGE! Never LOSE a game, and you will win EVERY game!! If you win EVERY BATTLE, then you will win EVERY GAME, and NEVER LOSE!! The easiest way to do this, is to use the DIFFICULTY!! Chieftain is too hard, it could be possible to LOSE! SETTLER is your friend, as you CANNOT LOSE on settler. The CUBES of the game must ALWAYS align with the TACTICS you use in EVERY BATTLE, for BATTLES are like CHEESE! Win every BATTLE!

digitCruncher_out!

[/sarcasm]

Anyway, I am sure Earth-God, and all his 'supporters' are actually just yanking your chains. Its pretty funny really :P Anyway, in the unlikely case that he IS serious... the above post is superior to your OP for the following reasons:

A) It is longer, and more in-depth.
B) It actually mentions GAME MECHANICS
C) It has correct punctuation, and spelling. Albeit, CAPS lock was on for a significant amount of it, but that is just a minor thing.
D) The advice it gives is correct (albeit either vague, or rather stupid (who would play on Settler, unless you are just starting out? That said, you CANNOT lose on Settler :P), unlike the abstraction from the real world to civ (breaking up your armies? Wow... THAT won't be ambushed at the roads of the civ you are invading, and THAT will SURELY take on a city which is garrisoned with the same numbers as each battalion) which should never work on any difficulty above Noble (and even Warlord is PUSHING it :P))

[Edit]Maybe... NOT feeding the trolls will mean that any people who are supporting Earth-God will go around and live and play Civ in whatever way they like... Of course, not feeding them would be no fun :P[/Edit]

Comparing a retort to a quatrain is not a parallel comparison.

1. write nonsensical thread
2. try to add less sense in every subsequent post
3. ???
4. profit!!!

(sorry, couldn't resist)

I just burst out laughing at work. My co-workers think I'm crazy now... great...

Seriously, this is one of the funniest threads I've read here. I love the nine-tuple post!
