And the mighty Roman Empire:
1475BC_RomanEmpireTrimmed.jpg

And the save is >here<.

Our fifth city is ready to be built next turn.

Workers coming from Rome every two turns.

Need to determine which unimproved tiles need to be worked and how important each one is.

Long term: need to expand south towards the Iroquois, which in turn means more cities.

Forgot the roster:
Inkoate (Up)
Formula51 (On Deck)
choleric
tao (just played)
CommandoBob (just played)

Edit: forgot to include Formula51.

Oh shoot... it's me now.
I'm in the middle of putting together a conference that's coming up on Friday, and won't be back at my computer with time to play until next Monday evening (Eastern US time). If you want to skip me this round, and put me back at the bottom, I'll play next time it come around!

It has been two days since Inkoate asked to be skipped and we have not heard from Formula51 since his last set of turns.

New Roster Order
choleric (Up)
tao (On Deck)
CommandoBob
Inkoate (skipped by request)
Formula51 (skipped, MIA?)

Alright, I got it but I am going to need some serious advice as to what I should do in the coming five-ten turns. I am lost.

Well, we are still in the Rapid Expansion Phase. We are using an RCP of 4. We have a city ready to built next turn on the second ring of that. According to tao we need more workers to make Rome more productive, so the city of Rome is set to make workers for a while (no more than this turnset).

We have a warrior out barb hunting.

We have workers improving terrain as they connect our cities.

Once Veii finishes the granary, I think it becomes a settler factory.

Cumae makes vet units for crowd control and exploration.

We have no current barb infestations.
We are at peace with everyone.

Looks to be a fairly smooth set of turns.

On Post #109 is an map showing the RCP of 4. It has not been dotted yet, but in the post following was some discussion on cities south of Rome.

I think everyone has assumed that the little piece of land a few tile south of Antium is just a peninsula and it probably is. If not, we need a city on ring 2 to serve as a choke point. With a city and a warrior we can blockade the rest of that land mass. We just need to find out what is down there.

Some Worker Moves:

The two workers east of Cumae will finish mining on turn 1. One can road, the other needs to move southwest to irrigate. When I made my moves I was looking at how far this tile was from Lake Rome. I did not see it was adjacent to the Tiber River! We need to irrigate this tile in order to irrigate the wheat bonus tile.

After the roadie finishes the road to Cumae, it looks his next move should be west of Cumae to mine the BG and then road it. This will be all he could do this turn set.

The new worker from Rome could go to the same tile as the irrigator. Together they will water this tile in two turns. When that is done, one needs to stay and make a road, the other need to move to the Wheat and begin watering. When the current road builder is done, move him onto the irrigator and road. When the irrigator finishes he can join the road crew and they should finish together, with no wasted turns.

On turn 3 Rome will build another worker and perhaps one more before the end of the turns. I am not sure exactly what tao has in mind. If Veii becomes our settler factory, we can shift Rome to build more units. In fact, Rome will need to build some units in order to regain its size.

Not knowing exactly what to do, I suggest mining the grassland southwest of Rome and also mining the grassland due east of Rome. I would like to chop some of the forests around Rome, but not just yet. If Rome makes settlers the chop is worthwhile. I just dislike to chop for another military unit.

Next Cities

While our major settler push will be to the southwest, we need at least one city to the north or northeast. They will settle in forests and have a tough time growing, but they will serve to expand our borders and keep the soon-to-be-defeated from becoming pests too early.

Sorry, was busy at work as the year comes to an end. Regarding the game: we are on our way. Plenty of room to expand without too much competition and 2 settler/worker factories. The main problem for now are the barbarians. And for this of course we need more military to protect our civilization.

The tech backlag hopefully will ease once we make more contacts. Especially valuable (after map making) is republic. And then we need money and iron to upgrade our warrior to praetorians and kick the Iroquois.

As can be seen from the attached image, we have some place to be settled in ring 4 and can also (especially in the southwest) start rcp7.

We also need to explore and find more luxuries, hopefully.

And before building more military in Rome, build barracks to get vet units.

Our workers need to connect and improve our cities. Besides irrigating towards Cumae, also road 1 or 2 forests between Rome and Veii - we need the commerce.

Sloppiness can be unlearned and having to deal with finals is never any fun. Both can lead to unfortunate events and encounters. Both can be learned from.

The wait is not as important as letting the others know that you are still present in the game. Just a note to say 'this is taking longer than I expected' or even to request a skip. Many SGs are not completed because everyone just goes away and does not goodbye. In fact, I see many I would like to play in, but cannot because I only have PTW and not C3C.

Don't give up. Life gets better. And it has its ups and downs.

Game Stuff
I am glad you explored the pensisula. Now we know what it is and can go on.

Is Rome building workers or warriors? tao had requested workers; you wrote warriors; just wanted to be sure.

Veii will finish the granary in the next few turns. It needs to build a settler and this settler needs to expand us southwest. Hiawatha is getting too close. I would prefer to keep him away by peaceful means (cities) but we may have to engage in warfare to keep him at bay. This will not happen anytime soon, but we need to begin planning for it.

The warrior factory in Cumae needs to keep cranking them out. We need them to explore and to keep our people happy and productive.

It looks like your next 5 turns will be as exciting as the first 5. :)

Just a comment on Antium: Long time back I suggested to not build barracks because as a coastal city it will pump out galleys and a barracks is wasted shields and upkeep. Can you switch it to something else?

And hopefully we will soon improve out military situation vs. the barbarians to use Rome as settler/worker pump as planned.

And I was occupied a lot in business also - hope this improves as the holiday season approaches. Btw I will be on Christmas vacation December 22nd till 27th.

PS: Starting next turnset, I think we can switch to 10 turns and only interrupt if the player wants to discuss a special situation.

choleric, are you still here? We are (or at least, I am).

Do you need a skip?

I think that choleric is MIA.
A new roster is in order.

Inkoate, are you still around?

New Roster Order
tao (Up)
CommandoBob(On Deck)
Inkoate
Formula51 (skipped, MIA?)
choleric (skipped, MIA?)

Since choleric did not post his save after five turns, his first five turns will need to be replayed.

Disclaimer
The last turns played on this SG were on December 15, 2005. Five turns were played and logged, but no save posted. The last post to this log was on January 18, 2006 by me.

So, I am picking up where this game was left off. If a save had been posted I would play from that. Since no save was posted I will play from the last save and replay those turns. I am not going to try to reproduce those five turns, just replay them. It has been a long time since I read that turn log, so I am not trying to avoid or correct any mistakes that may have happened.

All I can remember, once I opened the game, is that we had a city ready to build and that I had asked for the land south of Antium to be explored. Beyond that everything is a blur.

After I get this posted I will go back and get caught up.

Check this game with MapStat. We are holding our own in culture so far, and not really outpaced in the city race. In techs, we are down Bronze Working and Ceremonial Burial to the English. The Iroquois have those and Wheel and Masonry.

rBarbHorsie kills our vWarrior in Cumae and takes 12 gold.

Move wounded rWarrior on peninsula north towards a barracks.
Mining rWorker north of Antium finishes, helps road. Road completes, freeing up the original roader. Move him to the cow to mine and road.
MM Antium, put a citizen on the cow and one fishing. We grow in 2 and an extra beaker to our science. We learn MM in 20 turns instead of 22. Archer still completes in one.
Move archer north of Antium to Rome.
Exploring warrior NW again.

Both Hiawatha and Elizabeth will sell BW. Hiawatha wants 69 of our 75 gold; Elizabeth wants 53 gold and 1gpt. We only make 1gpt now. Respectfully decline both deals.

We will learn to read maps.
Map Making is still 19 turns away. With some MM and working roaded tiles we might be able to bring that down.

We will build an embassy with the Purple People.
I don't think this has been done yet.

We will research Map Making as quickly as possible, perhaps even having -1 gpt(?), which is why we would build the embassy first.
Need to work on this point.

Rome makes a settler and then produces workers for the rest of this turnset and all of the next turnset (adding on to what you said).
Rome will be doing this. Need three to five more workers.

Veii makes granary and then makes settlers.
Done. Need to know where to settle. I would want to expand south to keep the Purple People away, or at least keep them out past our second ring. Any cities to the north will need a lot of work to get productive.

Cumae makes barracks after this warrior. The Cumae warrior goes to Rome to MP.
Need some nosey warriors to explore, also.

There is a barb camp 3W of Cumae. It needs to be cleared. We need the money.

Neapolis needs to be connected on the BG NE of the city.

Veii needs a road to Antium, without having to go through Rome.
Veii needs a road to Cumae, for the same reason.

Need to explore. Need a dotmap of where to build.

Could really use a second luxury.

Veii, while not the capital, looks like it will be our central city, at least for a while.

Need to wisely chop forests around Rome and Veii.
