I thought IT people were supposed to be ahead of the software stupidity curve?

You'd think so, but they also have contracts with big IT-providers, and they have to deal with tons of less-computer-literate people doing dumb stuff with their computers. So they naturally prefer keeping it simple. Ultimately, even though I didn't agree with them, I could understand why they were doing what they were doing.
Even still, adopting a browser with fewer security problems would have saved them grief in the long run.
I used to use a double-thick taskbar on the bottom for God-knows-why. It had more time and date info, and I think I added a bunch of extra menus to it and needed the space to see open windows.
