This. Also, I like to have it showing because I use the clock in the lower right corner.

That was why I used to have mine always visible, but there's no way to get it to display seconds. So I replaced it with a transparent always-on-top clock that displays seconds and doesn't take vertical space across the whole screen.

I like the clean desktop, though--I can't stand clutter on top of my wallpaper image.

I feel the same way about permanent clutter, which is why that bottom row of icons is so... I don't even like looking at it on his desktop.
