I jumped to an early score lead with cities out fast with cultural push from SH monuments and EXP terraces, and I was able to grab a Horse resource between Sommer and me and a second Copper (had one right next to cap) between me and Leon, taking his only source. I also took control of an Iron resource on Plako's borders. I was hoping to keep extra resources from them while building city garrisons and Wonders. I probably shouldn't have built the 'Mids, but SH was helpful and the gold from Oracle/GW failure kept me teching nicely.
Leon was kind of pushed around by Sommer and I early. We had military units around his city early harassing him and I later took his Copper resource and he had no Horses either. Leon is small and right in between me and Sommer, struggling to find room for cities.
Sommer pulled an Oracle -> Feudalism Slingshot for his Native American PRO Longbows. I should have realized it was coming, but I didn't. He apparently also had an Ivory resource and got to Construction and HBR early, because when his stacks came to attack my Horse border city, I was surprised by the advanced troops. I had Swords, Axes, Chariots, and Quecha versus War Elephants, Catapults, Longbows, and Dog Soldiers. I honestly thought my city was a gonner, and I think Sommer probably thought this as well. But liberal whipping (first walls, then troops) and a quick beeline to Construction fueled by Oracle fail gold saved me. I kept putting so many troops in the city that he couldn't kill them all every turn. Whipping an Axeman every turn in that city and Swords in all the others. When I got three Catapults I held them back for a turn out of sight so they could catch up to each other. 3 Longbows go to pillage my Horse before I can get HBR and HAs, but I hit them with a previously unseen Catapult and kill them with Quecha, finishing them with a chariot so it can retreat back inside the city. I hit his main stack with 2 Catapults and immediately began attacking it before he could move it back a tile. Eventually I was able to kill them all, using a Chariot for the last one so it could retreat back to the city.
This is where the game stopped.
On the other side of the world, Plako and link16 were busy fighting each other. link tried using Spies and Praets on Plako and Plako fought them off. If those link hadn't been aggressive towards Plako, I'm sure Plako would have hit me on the other flank while Sommer was attacking me on one side. I would have collapsed easily because all of my focus was on one side.
I was so pressed for time moving all of those units and trying to whip my cities each turn, that I couldn't move all of my units on my other side of my empire. I was trying to expand while holding Sommer off, but I just didn't have time to pay attention to expanding.
I felt so frantic the whole game. No time to think, just react. One thing to be said for this type of game is that you make a lot more mistakes (because you make so many quick moves) and you see more consequences, and maybe learn something, but there's no time during play to think at least not when things get going. I would prefer a longer timer, but I guess it is more exciting. I will keep playing this game or start a new one.
