Terios

@Ajah: Hello jolly good chaps! I'm afraid we're in a spot of bother, one of our factories were blown up and many citizens were killed and there is evidence that citizens of Ajah were involved. As your nation is a honourable one, we can only conclude that some criminals of your nation have decided to perform a terrorist act against our state. As such, we request to have our security forces cooperate to find these terrorists and bring them to justice. Jolly good!

@Grue
We deny all connections with these bombings; this is either a terrorist attack without the consent of the People or the Kingdom, or an act of covert warfare that is intended to frame the Ajah for the horrendous incident that has occurred. Our borders are still highly controlled for the safety of our people, so as to prevent events such as this tragedy from unfolding. As such, we cannot allow any armed individuals from outside the realm into our domain. However, if your investigators are willing to disarm themselves in order to come here for this developing investigation, which we plan to fully analyze, then we ensure the safety and comfort of those ambassadors sent to us by your people. We grieve for your people and those injured and lost and their families. Let us work together to solve this horrendous crime, and if it is indeed discovered that another nation has framed my people, I guarantee we shall support your vengeful actions with the full force of the military of the Kingdom of Ajah, matching every soldier you place into combat.

We thank the jolly good chaps of the Kingdom of Ajar for their support!

Finally got some RP done, so enjoy. :)

Grue Caste System:

The Grue employ a caste system to maintain their nation. The Caste System is much more rigid than any human caste system, as the Grue differ physically and mentally caste-to-caste. However, functionally the caste system is more similar to a meritocracy as each Grue are literally built for the job that is chosen for them.

Castes of the Grue:

Worker Caste: Worker Caste Grue are the largest class within the Grue. They work in factories and maintain the countless machines within the Empire. They also preform all the menial labour in the country, such as transportation of resources, construction and street sweeping. They are one of the shortest Castes within the Grue, their short flexible bodies allowing them to into the very heart of the machines that they maintain. They have headgear that looks similar to metallic flat caps and are frequently covered soot. They are mainly found working in the vast Factories of Capital City, although a sizeable portion work to maintain the fleet of the Grue, in docks and in the ships themselves.

Military Caste: Although the Military Caste only make up around 2% of the Grue’s population, their importance on the Grue should not be ignored. They are the tallest of all Grue classes and by far the most majestic. They have headgear that look like metallic bicornes (the hat that Napoleon wore) and they are painted royal blue. Also they sport metallic moustaches.

The Military Caste are responsible for all military operations by the Grue. The distinction between the military arm and the naval arm is almost non-existent in Grue society, a soldier stationed on the frontier of Grue territory could very well be reassigned to a ship the very next day. The organisation of the Grue military is a very interesting subject and will be covered in further chapters of this book.

Diplomatic Caste: The Diplomatic Caste Grue identical to the military caste, apart from the lack of headgear and being about a head shorter than Military Caste members. However, they have completely different functions to the Military Caste. They serve as diplomats and handle all official communications between other countries. They are one of the rarest Castes, it is estimated that there are less than 1,000 of them.

Merchant Caste: The Merchant Caste are technically a sub-caste of the Diplomatic Caste, however they are much more populous than the Diplomatic Caste as they are the second largest Caste. They handle all trade and communication with foreigners not associated with foreign governments. They also oversee transportation of goods throughout the Empire, although this is a task that they share with the Bureaucratic Caste.

Bureaucratic Caste: The Bureaucratic Caste is the third largest caste within the Grue. They have hunchbacks, have six arms and have been compared to “metallic beetles”. They run the gigantic bureaucracy of the Grue, maintaining large warehouses filled with mostly useless paperwork. The Bureaucratic Caste also handle communication, distributing the “Royal Decrees” that come out of the King’s chair. Royal decrees are similar to punch cards used by old computers, they are inserted into a slit that is located on their chest and then the information is processed by the unit.

Scientific Caste: The Scientific Caste are a Sub-Caste of the Bureaucratic Caste and look identical to them other than that they are painted white. The Scientific Caste observes every aspect of the universe and files away their findings in a large warehouse, not matter how obvious or trivial their findings are. The Scientific Caste is also notable for rarely making sense when they speak, they usually talk in uninterrupted streams of abstract thought. Also notable is the fact that members of the Scientific Caste are the most likely to go insane.

Shadow Caste: Little is known about the Shadow Caste, few have been spotted and the King is reluctant to talk about them. They are only slightly shorter than members of the Military Caste, a lot thinner than the rest of the Grue and their body is almost completely covered in white cloth, they are notable for being the only Grue that are clothed in non-metallic substances. Most of the information about the Shadow Castes come from hearsay and rumour, so it is impossible to determine their true purpose. The most popular theory is that they are responsible for the espionage and counter-espionage for the Grue. Reports from the Nameless Kingdoms during the Grue Intervention support this theory, rumours persist of members of the Shadow Caste of being present at major meetings of the Anti-Grue Coalition within the Nameless Kingdoms, that they assassinated generals with swords that could disintegrate flesh and that they exploded when they were apprehended. Other common reports of about the Shadow Castes imply that they run very fast and silently, as Reptfalkan artists attempting to sketch them reported that they disappeared when they looked down at the sketchpad. When confronted, the King admitted that they performed a “unfortunate, but necessary duty”. He also implied that they were semi-autonomous. The King wished to assure Foreign Heads of State that no members of the Shadow Caste existing outside of the Empire that he knew of, although it is still possible that they are…

Other Groups of Note:

The King: The King of the Grue is found in the Royal Palace in Capital City and is literally attached to the Royal Throne. The King is a member of the Military Caste that has been attached to the Royal Throne. It has been theorized that the Royal Throne contains a supercomputer that runs the Empire, as a King has never been seen not sitting on the chair. There have only been three Kings in the history of the Grue, this is because the King has an amazing lifespan due to the extensive repairs that he gets due to their importance. When a King dies, a random member of the Military Caste is upgraded into the King and attached to the Royal Throne.

Goliaths: Goliaths are simply gigantic members of the Grue, towering over buildings. All Castes have had Goliaths within them, although they are most commonly seen in the Military Caste, where their massive size allows them to inflict massive amounts of damage on the enemy. According to Grue mythology, Goliaths were originally the founders of the Empire and modern Goliath designs are apparently based off these beings.

The Crazies: The Crazies are the Grue that live within the Crazy District. They are from many different Castes, but they all act in strange and unpredictable ways. It was theorised that the Crazy District contained malfunctioning Grue, but the King has said that they serve some unspecified role in the Empire.

Next Time: Geography of the Empire

We of the Grue have started our own little investigations into the terrorism acts within our Empire and our Vassals. Shadow Caste members are investigating inside our Empire and we have sent a small, unarmed task force to assist with the blokes in Ajah, with their permission of course.

If we do not find any evidence, we may have to expand our search Eastward, although we will ask for permission from respective nations before investigation starts of course. The sirs and madames to the East may be warned however, refusal to allow our investigators in will be taken as an high insult, cessation of trade and war may possibly follow. But we are sure this will not happen! We are sure that everything will come out spiffingly dandy! Jolly good!

Don't really think there'll be much more activity here. Orders locked.

==Disorder==

For once Terios is free from tempests and bombings. How long will the tranquility last, however?

Stats

The Mathalamus Empire has seen tensions with the Baase that have seen their forces head southward across the dangerous currents; while several thousand men were lost as a result of this colonization effort, some did manage to make their way safely to an island far to the south, putting the Empire in a position to claim more land at lower cost.

Dermul has seen the discovery of a new Terium deposit within its borders, boosting production by a fair amount.

Pixel-based bonuses are now in effect; larger states have a greater chance of new resource discoveries and higher population growth. I count the pixels every turn except every third, where I count rankings instead.

Viyaya will be dissolved if it does not get orders in this turn.

hmm. whoops. guess my colonist showed some initiative. good on them. oh well, i guess Baase will have to live with it.

my spending orders: (25,309 to spend)

Expansion: 2000. claim whatever is cheapest, also, try to establish an outpost on that funny looking island.

Army - 4000
Navy - 4000
Espionage - 309
Education - 5000
Healthcare - 5000
Infrastructure - 5000

(you know, the numbers are kind of getting high...)

also, increase the army and the navy to 500,000 soliders each.

Hello chaps! As we have found no terrorists in Ajah or within our own borders, our intelligence forces have concluded that dishonourable terrorists have committed these terrible acts and framed the Ajah. That is simply awful ol' chaps.

As such, we politely demand that our investigators are allowed into Dermul to see if any terrorists are in there.

On the contrary the isle above the notable bizarre one is desired by the Necrocracy for research purposes. We will ask you kindly to hand it over to Baase. Keep in mind that we are of death and as death is destined making enemies of us will only ensure that we will... keep the mercy of death from you o emperor for we give our most special of foes a extended life... that they may wish to not process. This is not the gift of undeath we speak of, for that is of death, but rather we speak of a... punishment to those who dare question the will of death.

Also the isle of the one mountain inaccessible by the rift will be claimed by Baase in time for its possible magical energies and hence we would kindly require the note that we will attempt to claim it. Any questions by the Empire of Mathalamus will have to be set in considerations to death itself. We of Basse will not be denied our riches. Frankly I am sure many others would enjoy the fruits of Mathalamus's land... as we bring death in its glory.

Emperor: hmm... we do not desire conflict... at least for now... so we will, of course, hand the island over. for free. ill even leave the infrastructure intact for you.

i do hope you don't have any bad feelings towards us for this minor mishap. be sure to know, that appeasement isn't our policy. cherish it, for its our only one. for appeasement.... causes problems.

also changing my orders. the 2000 gold i allocated for expansion will be instead allocated to the army and navy. 1000 each.

We dislike your tone. However the Dermul have nothing to hide, terrorist actions are the work of the lowest kind of scum. We will permit a small, unarmed group of Grue investigators to enter Dermul territory once a sufficiently respectful request has been received.

-----

In response to the Mathalmus accidental intrusion onto lands slated for Baasen expansion the HIA have passed a resolution that any islands not yet under Dermul governance but that have a stable connection to land that is either governed by the Dermul or publically slated for Dermul expansion are to be considered as within the Dermul SoI and will be annexed when appropriate. This resolution does not apply to islands that have a stable connection to non-Dermul governed territory in addition to a connection to Dermul territory.

Seriously, is it so hard to type in Mathalamus? the Emperor is getting displeased.

Good day my friends.

While it has been a pleasure to GM this for these last seven turns, I just don’t think has the activity to really be worth your time. For the most part it’s stayed afloat mostly because of my own stubbornness in pursuing updates, thus managing to encourage the (gradually dwindling) player base to always get orders in time and keep everything running smoothly. I blame the fact many players were from the IOT subforum, thus meaning those who do not check the NES forum regularly gradually fell out. Lesson learned.

Perhaps I will return to NES someday and run a game that fares better. Third’s the charm, right?

Good game regardless, and thank you all for playing. :)

As a final parting gift:

Mathalamite War. Mathalamite incursions into the southern regions prompt a preemptive strike by Dermul and Baase to assert their rights over the island. The Empire, meanwhile, was also persuaded by the Baase to join the war effort in the hopes of neutralizing the possible Mathalamus threat once and for all. It was a half-empty, half-full result: while the Mathalamite colonies were purged from the south, back home the Mathalamites enjoyed too great a home field advantage and overran most of the Imperial and Baase colonies. While the Allies had nearly thrice the economic power of the Mathalamus Empire, after three years the people were tired of war; in a treaty that promised Imperial citizens equal rights, the Mathalamus Empire was able to gain control of its entire continent, a small prize for its defeat in the colonial outposts elsewhere.

The Viyaya Purchase. Eager to fuel their expansion elsewhere, the Grue and Dermul gradually sold off their holdings on Viyaya’s home continent, allowing the entire region to eventually come under the rule of the country. Dermul was initially hesitant to sell off the buffer zone between Viyaya and the Dermul capital, but as the Dermul Empire grew, the capital was eventually moved further south to the regions bordering Ajah, to better oversee Dermul’s rivalry with that country.

Masters of the Forest. The Cahuilla gradually became more and more powerful as the years went by, with an enormous amount of effort being put into their nomadic ways to claim more and more land. Ajah found itself limited from moving southward by the ferociously-skilled fighters, and always fearing exposing their flank to Dermul, eventually capitulated on the subject of the Great Terian Forest.

The Great DMZ. As Ajah and Dermul raced to close the gap between them, war nearly broke out on several occasions, prompting the powers to declare several miles between their borders to be demilitarized and neutral; they agreed to keep the area from falling underneath outside rule in the same accord. Each power wished to avoid war with each other to avoid inviting opportunism by the Baase and Cahuilla, respectively.

To the Seas. The Cahuilla found themselves advanced unintentionally as they finally came to the shores of their great airborne continent. After tensions with the Ajah forces, Dermul and others seeking to keep Ajah from ruling the entire landmass were more than willing to teach them the secrets of shipbuilding. Before long the Cahuilla were fielding fleets of their own, and they stretched across most of the southern extremes of the continent.

The Great Expeditions. The Mathalamites, Grue, and Viyayans, knowing they were boxed in and had minimal opportunities for expansion, invested in better shipping technologies. Before long they were setting up colonial outposts to the west of Ajah and the Cahuilla, much to the countries’ mutual chagrin. However, it enormously helped preserve the balance of power, preventing the southern and equatorial countries from dominating the planet. The Baase, meanwhile, carved out a presence for themselves in the southernmost extremes of the world, using the frigid territory as a training ground for large numbers of undead.

The Future? The Baase are reported to be sending an expedition to the incredibly tempestuous island that no one has yet dared to explore (because all who try to reach it have perished)… what might they find there?

If you’re into geopolitical sims, I’m currently running a game over at the (arbitrarily separate in my opinion but I digress) IOT subforum, Multipolarity IV, which has an emphasis on diplomacy and soft power over war and expansion as a means of gaining power.

Take care, folks!

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. :)

Who were the terrorists anyway?

The Baase.

Pretty much every single terrorist disturbance this game has been the responsibility of Ailedhoo. :p

I did one against the Baltik near the begining :p

ah, the Mathalamus Empire was successful in its goal: uniting the continent. good game TF.
