I never really played much Civ II, but when I did it was because the included scenarios. Now I am looking to have another crack at the game, but I also would really like to experience the additional scenarios I never played. I only had the base version on PC and Macintosh, no expansions. I know that the MGE has all of them, but does Test of Time? ToT is a lot cheaper and I'd like to take a crack at the Fantasy scenario. Otherwise, I've heard the AI became unnecessarily aggressive in both MGE and ToT, so I would likely continue playing the base game of Civ II for the regular game, unless there are other worthwhile additions in later versions.

ToT did not come with the original scenarios from MGE / Fantastic Worlds / Conflicts in Civilization.

With that said, there remains a lively group building scenarios for ToT that maximize everything about the game engine, with new scenarios continuing to be released. You can find more info on that in the Scenario League forums.

Great to see you express and interest and let us know if you need any help getting set up!

Welcome! :)

The unnecessarily aggressive AI has been fixed for MGE in the Civ2UIA addon and ToT with the ToTPP addon. Each of those programs make numerous awesome other changes to both games too.

If you're on the hunt for fun Civ2 scenarios to play then you'll find plenty on the Scenario League website and I've been preserving and cataloging thousands of them over in this thread here.

If you do jump over to ToT then once again the scenario league website has what you need and as JP points out there are newer bigger scenarios being created by the guys on the scenario league forum too. While MGE scenarios don't work with ToT Gapetit has been converting a lot of them over to ToT with enhanced graphics.

Oh and of course the CivFanatics downloads area is full of Civ2 MGE & ToT scenarios too.

If there's a particular area of scenarios that interest you (eg WW2 or Fantasy, Scifi) let us know and we can make recommendations of good stuff to check out. :)

Hey, thanks for the info. I have heard of the ToTPP, I believe it may have been necessary to get the game running on some 64-bit Windows versions. I play on XP for these older games so hopefully there will be no snags to begin with there. What I'm really interested in with ToT is the 4 dimensional maps, I'd like to see some different uses of it. The default scenarios look interesting, but I imagine custom maps have made better use of this feature.

Oh yes, I highly recommend playing the Scifi scenario and the Fantasy scenario modes that come with ToT. They both have 4 unique worlds and are very very fun..

I really enjoyed competing with alien factions to colonize multiple alien worlds in the scifi scenario, you'll notice that each alien world has custom animating terrain and even full story descriptions when you look each one of them up in the pedia that really adds immersion. There's an old tips and strategy thread I posted some stuff in back when I played it that you may find useful if you have a go at that one...

If you end up trying the fantasy stuff then I haven't tried regular fantasy mode however I did try the big prebuilt Midgard scenario that uses the fantasy mode. Gorgeous worlds, nice cutscene videos, and really cool unique races with different units with advantages and disavantages. The only issue is the complex events setup for the scenario story are kind of wired together like a chirstmas tree and are full of bugs. Catfish made a patch that fixes most of them though!

And yeah fans have some some amazing stuff with the multi world features @JPetroski and @Prof. Garfield used it to create a night time strategic bombing layer that destroys city buildings in the regular day time world in their Over the Reich WW2 scenario. @Kestrel used it to do a whole bunch of solar system colonization scenarios including an extended version of the good old Mars now scenario that allows you to dig underground and made cities beneath the surface and also go back to earth and re-colonise there. But that's just scratching the surface.. there's so much more out there too. :)

Great info, I think my next PC purchase will be a copy of this game. Bummer that it never came out on GOG. Are these the default graphics? I think the darker artstyle matches these scenarios very well. I remember Civ II was superior to III in that the UI elements scaled properly to any screen resolution thanks to being windowed, at least on Mac but I assume Windows too. Thanks for the link to the Midgard patch, as a fan of event editing in Europa Universalis I and II I know it can become a mesh of busted overlapping events so I'm not too surprised they ran into the same hiccup making that scenario.

Yeah I'm working on that one here lol: https://forums.civfanatics.com/thre...i-mge-test-of-time-to-be-added-to-gog.675301/
However who knows if we'll ever succeed in getting 2K's attention. Plenty of copies of ToT on ebay though, that's how I got my copy a few years back. Recently got myself the boxset with the posters too.

Yup those screens are default ToT graphics with no mods applied. A lot of people don't and didn't like the darker ToT graphics so there are some nice lighter terrain mods out there however I like the default graphics so I stick with them. Yeah Civ2's UI has aged better than Civ3s!
.

Some of the official Fantastic Worlds scenarios sure could benefit from a ToT version, e.g. the other Mick Uhl scenarios (maybe a less eurocentric version of the Jules Verne scenario, for example)?

They'd need someone who could work on it without getting distracted and trying to make a superscenario.....(to start with....)
