TH4 - The Age of Sail - OPEN SG

SaaMs TH4 Turns. Playing With the Big Boys
IT- I look around. Nice little empire we've got going. (To those of you who dont know me, Im SaaM from the Demogame. Im a penguin freak who is a windows using maccie. Enough about me)
T1- I load a settler on to a galley and head to the island with the archer on it. On the island with two settlers, I plop down one of them exactly where it is and form Eboracum. Warrior in 10. The hut is deserted. The second settler will begin looking for a nice spot.
T2- Alesia: Settler- Settler. Gergovia's culture expands. I knock lux to 40% to keep Entremont from rioting next turn.
T3- Entremont: Galley- Galley. Agustodurum: Temple- Harbor
T4- Camulodunum: Settler-Galley. I got a loaded galley onto archer island, will settle on river when it unloads. We meet Monty. He lacks writing, has wheel, iron and myst. I trade him writing for Iron working (could have done anyone of the 3, but I felt our UU was worth more). Iron assesment: A cow island I was going to settle has it, Neat Eboracum has it.
T5- On archer island, we find a surprise. Alex has sent settlers... Lugdunum: Settler- Harbor. Alex offers The Wheel for contact with Monty. And Masonry for contact with Cleo. Heh.. I just hope this isnt a :smoke:. Horses are to the S of Entremont, W of Verulamium. Will be connected by road soon.
T6- Nada, really
T7- Greeks settle on Archer Island. Entremont: Galley-Galley. Augustodurum's culture expands. Japan builds Oracle.
T8- We meet Liz, who offers Myst. for 60g. No thanks. Agedincum will disband if workers are formed, but will cut off science. I switch to a settler with hopes of mabey replacing it.Burdigala is formed
T9- Horse road in Verulamium
T10- Well, this pretty much raps things up. To the next player- England is advanced. Youve got a couple settler boats. Thats about all.

The Save

150BC(0) Build Embassy in England for 46. London is building a market which means they have currency on top of the math that we lack. It has a rax, harbor, temple, great lighthouse. No strat resources or lux.

Buy philo from Greece for 108 gold. Trade Masonry and Philo to Aztecs for HBR and Myst. Sell Philo to Spain for 49 gold. Buy contact with the Japs from the Greeks for 68 gold. Trade contact with the Spanish and Aztecs, philo for Math @ 3rd and 6 gold. Sell Math to Greeks for 102 gold.

We are now down only currency (to the English). We have the most cities. England is only 1 behind. Greece is next with 5 + capital. Aztecs, Japs, and Spanish each only have 3 extras.

Found an embassy with Greece. They have the Colossus and are 1 turn from finishing the pyramids. No strat resources or lux.

Move around some units on our main land to get full MP action and reduce luxes to 30%.

130BC (1) Move galleys.

110BC (2) Found Cataractonimum on iron to the west. CoL is now available. We badly need this tech to reduce corruption.

90BC (3) Nada)

70BC (4) Whip harbor in Veru.

50BC (5)

30BC (6) Greece has moved very close to Burd. It looks like a sneak attack waiting to happen. So I dail up Alex and buy CoL for 5 gold and 10gpt.

IT Sure enough, the Greeks declared war. Our archer killed an attacking warrior.

10BC (7) Found Lapurdum and get currency from a hut.

IT Burdigala is lost to the Greeks.

10AD Tolosa is founded on the northern most island, claiming iron and gems.

30AD (9) Nada

50AD (10) Found Lindum near Spain to claim ivory.

I have a force of 2 horses, 1 spear and 1 warrior ready to attack Pharsalos. We have 1 lux online now. Another will come online next turn when a town is founded south of Verulum. The town with the spices and silks will need its temple whipped next turn. This island will need a lot of worker attention as well. There is still much to settle. I found some new islands on my turn. We are at tech parity with everyone. Lit due up in only a few turns. Then min sci should be run on Republic. Good luck to the next leader.

The Game

Wow, looks like things are heating up. Sneak attack from Greece?! I guess they know we won't go attacking them with archers against hoplites (or our horribly expensive UU that needs iron that we don't have and would trigger a Golden Age we don't want. :) )

Oh, and tech parity - Currency from a hut? - is very good. :D Nice, alert move to buy Code of Laws there. :goodjob:

We might have the capacity to run max science towards Republic; if we can get it in 30 turns or less it's probably worthwhile (since we can likely buy it after our own research blunts the cost, in 20 turns or so.)

And we do need a Forbidden Palace.. somewhere. I'm not sure of the best spot, though it'll probably take forever to build if done more than one island away from home. Richborough might be a good choice?

I'd recommend making peace when we can, before we get dogpiled. It's up to the next leader of the Archipelago, though! :D

I agree with THawk that making peace with Greece will be a good idea. I would try to raze Pharsalos and then get peace.

We do have iron. It us under Cataractonimum (sp?). When it gets a harbor, all our main cities will get access.

As for the FP, two spots came to my mind:

1) the island that Lapurdum was founded on is decent size. It is relatively close to Japan (still in fog, but borders are noticeable). But as it was just founded, it will take a lot of development to get it up to speed. It is also a good distance from the capital and will take awhile to build the FP.

2) Veru is the other spot that I would consider. It is more centrally located on its island than Rich and is also closer to the islands further east. It is close enough to our capital that it could build the FP in a reasonable timeframe.

What this all boils down to is long term versus short term benefit. Long term, I think Lap is better. Short term, Veru is better. If somehow we get a leader from fighting the Greeks, it might make sense to use him to rush the FP in Lap. If no leader, then maybe try to build it in Veru.

Overall, I think our strategy should be to aggressively continue the land grab. Focus on getting as many luxes and strat resources as possible. Then get the AIs addicted to our goods. We will be the world's bankers, selling our wares for steep tech discounts.

We also may need to research a good bit of stuff ourselves. Of the AIs, only the English and Greeks are capable of tech leading right now. With this situation, we may be constantly buying techs @ 3rd, but have no way to resell them for close to value. Or, we will have to pay monopoly prices to start a broker opportunity if one arises. Neither situation is good for getting cheap techs.

Got it

50AD (0): So, short term goals would be to hook up iron, and get a decent peace ASAP with Greeks.
Greece refuses to acknowledge our envoy. Lets hope the two galleys up by our iron city is empty.....

IBT: See two more Phalanxes enter Pharsalos. There is no way we can get that city with three defenders.
I will unload our horse anyway, in order to have pressure on the greeks to maintain that defensive position.

70AD: Switch Alesia from Horse to settler. Thinkking I can sneak in a new city where the last one was razed.
It is a good city, with foodplains and hills, and we need the production capacity badly.
The Ais are very very poor, or we have nothing to interest them.

IBT: Greece unloads 2 hoplites and 2 archers next to our undefended Lapurdum. Cataractonium produces a worker, set to harbor.

90AD: Greece still wont talk to us. Rather than letting Greece warriors pillage, I abandon Lapurdum. Things look bleak.

IBT: See orange units on the Pharsalos island. England ? Japanese and ENglish statrs to build Great Wall.

110AD: I start to evacuate from the Pharsalos island. It is getting crowded, and I need to get defenders to our iron city.
Japanese wants Currency, Code of Laws and 60 gold for Construction. I hold off, hoping to get a monopoly on LIterature.

IBT: Entremont completes horseman. I start it on a Marketplace for now. Next leader may want to switch that for something else.

130AD: Change Harbor in August to Courthouse. It would be enough with one harbour on the island for a long time.
August has five two food squares after forest chops. Found Curovernum on a far island.

IBT: Greece tries to unload troops by our iron city, but their path is blocked by a worker .. That was a close one.
Lose an exploring galley. Had hoped he would be able to cross safely.

150AD: I pay 20 gold for peace with Alexander. I can not see any way we can get better terms, and we have a lot of weakly defended cities.
The other nations are still only up Construction on us. We have Literature in one. Hmm, I try in vain to find the safe path
paths to the northern islands.

IBT: We get literature, and I set us upon teh path of the Republic. Sigh, forgot to check happines after making peace, and Entremont goes into disorder.
Must have been some wartime happines that worke off now that we are at peace.

170AD: Hmm, thought LIterature at monopoly would be worth Construction, but LIzzy wants 190 gold to go with the deal. Japan wants 130 gold.
Greeve goes down to 110 gold. Deal. Get back the gold by peddling Literature to Lizzy and Japan.

IBT: Set production to marketplaces in those cities finishing troops.

190AD: NOt much.

IBT: zzz

210AD: SOme more exploring. Trying to get a new settler up to the northern island(s). Lizzy has Republic, but wont sell.
I set research at max for Republic, hoping price will fall long before I have researched on my own. Republic in 17 at -20.
Whip a temple in Eboracum.

IBT: Hmm, lost my notes. Scratch head.

250AD: Plan with settler is to settle on spot where horses are. It will not anger English overmuch, and we will get game forest as well as some fish.
Hopefully desert will hold some nice Saltpeter for us also. Lizzy wouldn't part with Republic for any price, and all others are very poor.

Grimjack.

Note, I forgot to put in embassies at AIs. At least put up an embassie at Greece. I do not want to fight them again without adequate troops.

IT 250AD: Lindum warrior -> harbor. I think we should just build our FP one or two islands east of our starting island.

There are gems, ivory, spices, and silk all in sight and unclaimed, just to secure them and get them on our trade network once we discover engineering.

1 260AD: Nemausus warrior -> harbor. The English are building the Great Library.

2 270AD: I get a warrior to pop a hut on a one-tile island (wonder if you can get barbarians from such huts), and we get Polytheism!

Even Polytheism doesn't impress the English that much. We have to give Polytheism + Incense + Dyes + Horses + 240 gold to wrest Republic off her. Sheesh!

We sell Poly to Greece for 89 gold + 4gpt. Then to Japan for 25 gold. Making it to the middle ages, Greece gets Monotheism as their free tech.

3 280AD: The Republic of Celtland is formed. lux -> 20%; science -> 40%; research -> engineering in 24 turns @ -11gpt. We need luxuries hooked up fast!

4 290AD: I switch Verulamium from courthouse -> forbidden palace due in 55 turns but that'll come down. Richborough switched from courthouse to library, since it'll be right next to the FP when it completes.

Our settler beats a Greek settler by 1 turn to the city site on mixed island and founds Glanum.

5 300AD: Alesia settler -> worker. We probably shouldn't have taken *all* our workers off Capital Island! Georgovia settler -> marketplace. Augustodurum courthouse -> marketplace; Cataractonium (distant island city) riots. Oops.

6 310AD: ...

7 320AD:

8 330AD: Entremont market -> library; Alesia worker -> aqueduct.

9 340AD: As Entremont grows to size 12, we have to set a tax collector. I strongly suggest that as soon as Eboracum's spices are hooked up, we rush the harbor there. That city has two luxuries in its radius and so it's well worth it.

10 350AD: ...

Good luck to the next King of the Archipelago.

Cataractonium is separated by sea squares from the main cities -- iron won't be hooked up until Engineering. So no rush on that harbor. :)

I'd probably recommend rushing the courthouse at Verulanium before having it build the FP. Even if the shield gain is marginal, having the courthouse lets the city recover more happy faces from lux tax and greatly reduces its happiness problems. I learned that in LotR5; one of few good things to come from that game. :)

And yes, be aware of the rules changes now - thanks, Renata - sea squares are navigable with Engineering, and irrigation without fresh water is available at Invention.

Still a lot of islands out there... who wants it next?

{bump}
I want to grab this but I'm scrambling to finish GOTM by the 31st.:(

Someone keep it going please, so I can give it a go next week.:)

This sounds like a great varient.

I'll play ten turns tonight unless someone else posts an "I've got it" message before 8 pm Eastern tonight. If someone else wants to squeeze a set of turns in before then, feel free to do so and I'll pick it up from there.

Thanks for letting me join y'all. This looks like a fun game!

(0) 350 – Engineering dialed back just four turns with a +13gpt effect on our net income. MM Camulo to increase food without harming production. Lugdunum swaps to courthouse, which will increase its production and speed construction of its future duct and market. Swap Verulamium to granary, rush it, then swap to courthouse, which will be rushed next turn. That should ultimately speed construction of the FP. MM Gergovia to grow one turn faster. Lindum will starve next turn, so it swaps to worker (rushed for 4gp) and then loses its taxman. It will riot next turn, but will at least get some use out of the citizen it would have lost.

(1) 360 - Lugdunum: courthouse->duct. Lindum riots but produces its worker and begins construction of a temple (which will benefit from the worker’s forest chopping efforts). Entremont swaps to settler, which will join a nearby galley next turn, and is MM to add 4gpt and the ability to fire its clown for one turn. This game is a veritable MM fest.

(2) 370 – Entremont: settler->spear. Camo: duct->market. Veru: courthouse->FP. Our exploring warrior pops a hut full of yokels. Ratae swaps to worker.

(3) 380 – Our valiant warrior survives his fight with the drunken yokels and hops back on the galley. Isca founded and begins a warrior.

(4) 390 – The Greeks drop a settler next to Cataract. Our peace deal ends next turn. This could get fun!

(5) 400 – Entremont: spear->settler. Gergovia swaps to duct, with a chop-aided market to follow.

(6) 410 – Curovernum: worker->harbor. Knowing nothing bad can come of it, we pop a hut by founding Segusio. Oh joy! We get maps of land we already knew about. Let’s try again with our other warrior. D’oh! Yokels. :( The English have Engineering now.

(7) 420 – Our warrior, on a mountain and fighting conscripts, fends off one warrior but dies to the second one’s attack.

(8) 430 – Gergovia: duct->market.

(9) 440 – Entremont: settler->spear. Ratae: worker->worker. English completed the Great Wall.

(10) 450 -

The forest chop by Agendicum should time nicely with the founding of a city nearby. Cataract’s harbor should be rushed when Engineering comes in. We have troops in place to attack Argos (unless the city builds a hoplite) when it grows to 2 population. Keep the troops away from Argos until you’re ready to attack so hopefully the AI won’t get spooked and will stick with a warrior for defense. We may be able to swap Republic and Engineering for Mono from the Greeks before declaring war on them, but the monopoly price may still be too steep. Two of our galleys have settler pairs on them. Entremont can spit out settler pairs every few turns. We should keep it doing so until all the land is settled, IMHO. There are micromanagement opportunities in multiple cities each turn, so diligence will pay off.
