Thanks to Barbatos, I finally used the #$&! world editor

Back to Barbatos.

Today I started a game where I'd been with one other AI on a nice little continent. Well, the other AI (Amurites) and the little summoner. But I worked my way around him. Just never entered his line of sight after I'd lost my first scout to him. And, while being stuck with the already repeatedly mentioned problem of him being overpowered, I'd figured out a way to take him out earlier.
I had taken out the Amurites with Larry, Curly and Moe. And - pleasant as it were - the sepulcher was next to the coast. So I figured that a caravel with expanded hull and skeleton crew would do the trick nicely. So after researching some of the workertechs and two religions I went for optics to get me those caravels. And when I've been a couple of turns close to having optics it happend ...

:mischief:

Spoiler the happening :
 He started moving! :aargh:
Has anyone else seen that happen before? I'm really pi$$ed because it was either losing fast or using WB. Which not only feels like cheating.

Thanx for your input. ;)

Thank you for your fast reply. :)

So should this go into the bug thread? I'm not sure. ;)

Barbatos, like any other Arcane unit, can get the mobility1 promotion if his owner (in this case, the Barbarian State) has the Horseback Riding tech (and he has the xp to spend on a new promotion, or course).

Acheron has movement points but the AI is supposed to be programmed not to move him. I don't think there is any such AI for Barbatos; he starts with 0 movement, so he is actually incapable of moving (until the barbs get horseback riding...) I know that a while back I saw his summons take out another civ, and then he moved to guard that civ's capital (and get in position for his summons to be in range of that civs last city)

The barbs don't tend to be great at research (Although I'm pretty sure they can research things on their own once they have cities), but they are given techs for free if enough other players have them. Also, if you start in a latter age then they will be much closer to having the needed tech (I forget whether horseback riding is given for free in Classical Age starts, or if only all of its prereqs are). Once Horseback Riding is pretty common, the barbs become more mobile. You know that the Barbs have the tech when you see barbarian Wolf riders. (I'm pretty sure that the mechanism that turns goblins int0 wolf riders wen they kill a wolf hasn't been carried over to BtS yet, but barbarian goblins aren't likely to kill wolves anyway, since animals start as barb units.)

Some very interesting comments. I always wonder about the barbs and techs.

For example, when I use the Labruscum setting, I am amazed to find one barb city building the Forbidden Palace on turn 1. I know you need 8 cities for that, which they obviously have, but as I almost never have that many cities in raging barb games, I seldom build it. However, isn't a mid-game tech required to build the Forbidden Palace?

It makes no sense, of course, for the barbs to build it considering they have no maintenance costs to be concerned with. Maybe a BtS thing, but still building on turn 1:confused:

I don't think it is possible anymore to get a wolf rider with a goblin. I think I tried it playing Sheelba and the wolf was killed.

Yes, it seems like once you get Hunting and build hunters, barb Lizardmen show up same with barb Axemen and so forth. I guess there is a formula for the % of civs that have the techs for the barbs to get them and be able to build the units.

I've seen Barbatos on the move a couple of times, but I have no idea what triggers that. He seems to behave much as other barbs do, camping out on lairs or barb cities in a random seeming sort of way. And if he's overpowered when he's stationary, a moving Barbatos is an automatic game restart, do not pass go, do not collect 200 gold.

I've never seen Acheron actually move, but I HAVE seen him camped out one or two tiles from "his" city. And while we're at it, what ever happened to his hoard of gold? I got it in an earlier FFH version, and it's still mentioned when he spawns, but a couple of times I've been able to take him out, and gotten nada.

Should I even Try? I mean, Patria, gems, sugar, cow...

That's a sweet startup, except for that one teeny problem... Barbatos = death. None of the rest of it matters. :(

Yep. Turn 128 his wraiths had 3 movement. 8 warriors defending Innsmouth were not able to hold the barrage of summons. Was building warriors at a rate of one every turn and a half or so. Wraiths killed me :-(.

If only you'd been playing as the Clan, then you'd be almost invincible. Barbatos would make a powerful defender for your empire.

Heh. With Patria and Barbatos, game over. My new start wasn't nearly as nice, but with some lucky events i now have a str 5 hero scout (w/ great commander) (named him aragorn) soon to be upgraded to a ranger.

Ouch! Do you by chance have an early save from that game? I've never had such a great start for the Lanun and I would like to play that Barbatos challenge. Don't know that I'd manage survival but it would be fun to try!

Sadly, I do not :-(

Meh. I would have just gone on WB and dump him somewhere else. It's quite strange, if he starts far away from the other civs Ive often seen him build up his own little barb civ, every turn he sumons wraiths or elementals to go and defend his cities, they're completely invulnerable in early game. Are his summons supposed to stay for 3 turns btw?

Yep, he (or a nominal barb leader?) has the summoner trait.
