If you don’t know
Spoiler Just in case you want to wait for it to release :
Babylon was leaked

And one of the least talked about, yet probably one of the most important part of the leak was the fact that 24 new great people are added.

Does this mean more great people in each branch, or does it mean an entirely new branch of great people all together?
Does this mean Great Theologians?
Stephen Hawking?

What are your theories?

At this stage in the game I think it will just be a whole lot of new great people that they put into existing categories.
There are nine types but I think reasonably you can leave out any new Great Prophets, unless they get a rework because they act the same, so maybe 3 new Great People could go into the other categories (General, Admiral, Merchant, Engineer, Scientist, Writer, Artist, Musician).

We haven't got new types of city-states when they say new, so I'm not expecting any Great Theologians, Great Humanitarians, Great Entertainers, Great Diplomats etc.

24 sounds like a lot, but there's gotta be what, like 120+ out there already? I would expect that they will simply add a few new great people to each current category, since adding a new category you would almost certainly need that tied to a new district, which isn't coming in the pack. You could easily throw in 7 new scientists, one per era, and then a handful of others here or there in the other categories. Or possibly they add just a bunch of "future era" great people to each category as another possibility.

While I agree with you, if we get Great Theologians or Great Entertainers, We wouldn’t need a new district.
For Theologians would use Great Prophet Points, and Entertainers would already have Entertainment Complexes and Water Parks.

I'd like to see some great generals that were based on fighters. Example:

- The Red Baron. His retirement ability lets your air units fight other air units more effectively.

- Spartacus. His retirement ability builds a coliseum in an entertainment district and makes them 50% cheaper to build. Yeah I know this one's a bit iffy... there's no slavery mechanics in the game, so I don't know what else to put!

- William Tell (existence dubious but I don't care, so is Dido's): Retirement ability gives crossbowmen +1 range (doesn't carry over to the next unit or else it'd be a bit too OP).

The new great people belong to that heroes and legends mode or whatever, they are called great heroes

It's 24 because it's 8 eras and 3 great people in each era

Having a number is definitely interesting for speculative purposes. Is was hoping "numerous new great people" would mean at least one more per era per category, but 24 isn't nearly enough for that. It's almost the right number to fit a new great person category, but not quite (3 great people per era times 7 eras with great people equals 21). Future era great people might be the possibility that lines up best numerically. Three each of scientists, writers, artists, musicians, engineers, merchants, admirals and generals makes an even 24.

However they're distributed, though, only getting 24 seems a bit disappointing. Given how dramatically options for civs, city states and wonders have expanded since vanilla, leaving things at or near the original 3 great people per category would feel like a serious waste of potential.

Well, I bet we find out in a week. The Babylon leak indicated November 19 is the release date, then next Monday should be the pack preview.

So the legacy of the guy who led one of the largest slave revolts in history is to double down on slavery? :p

OK, how about "Spatacus can walk over other civ's workers and have them join your team without declaring war"? Or "enemy civs have -5 loyalty for every worker in their city"? I dunno.

If you want a Great General with keeping the theme of building arenas, you could go with Commodus.

I'm pretty sure the new heroes aren't included in the 24 Great People. These extra great people are for the standard game.

Would you rather he gave an additional charge to all builders?

All I can say is whomever the 24 new great people are, I sure hope we get more representation from Africa, the Middle East, the Americas (not USA), and Southeast Asia which are seriously lacking in great people at the moment (no, Comandantes Generales don't count).

Off the top of my head, some suggestions: Ahuitzotl, Ibn Battuta, Ibn Sina, al-Khwarizmi, Evliya Celebi, Turgut Reis, Yaa Asantewaa, Zaha Hadid, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Juana Inés de la Cruz, Emilio Aguinaldo, etc.

Checking the current roster, we only have
2 Sub-Saharan Africans
4 Americans, not from USA (not counting comandantes)
7 Middle Easterners and North Africans (including al-Zahrawi, who lived in Andalusia)
1 Southeast Asian

The USA alone has about 20 great people, depending on how you count immigrants who achieved success in the states, which is more than those four regions combined. Same for the British Isles.

I'd be pleased to see Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille (Great Scientist, renaissance / industrial era) as well as both modern / atmoic era Stephen Hawking (Great Scientist) and Isaac Asimov (Great Writer).

Probably the entire Aerodrome would have to be reworked (adding an economic component) for this...but I wish that we would get a new GP class attached to it. Some of them should have a scientific background (pioneers of flight, developers of new air craft types), some should be figthers and some people exploring the possibilities of flight in economic terms.

Is this an educated guess or some info you are basing your thoughts on?

My initial thoughts are the new great people are related to the new game mode and are obviously great heroes. I was thinking of the possibility of how as in civ 4 Warlords great generals could be attached to units allowing them new unique promotions etc, using this mechanic for great heroes. Or another possibility is that the great heroes are already a hero attached to a military unit.

But obviously mine is just a guess, could be something different...

If we do get “great entertainers,” here is how I think it should work. They do not provide amenities (great merchants and engineers already do this); rather, they are earned by high happiness or excess amenities. Right now, amenities seem so useless. We don’t need more amenities; we need the amenities we have to do more.

Personally, I am hoping for Great Theologians such as Martin Luther or Thomas Aquinas. It is a shame Prophet points are useless after founding a religion, or all religions are founded if you missed doing so. There are interesting possibilities.
