The Ancient Mediterranean MOD (TAM)

Thanks, I did that. Huge difference, it looks great. A minor issue though. Is it just me, or does irrigation not work on grasslands? Just after researching agriculture, I attempt to irrigate grasslands, which should give me 3 food instead of 2, but there is no difference. Anyone else notice this, or am I just missing something obvious here?

Goverment tile penalties. Any tile producing 3+ of something produces -1. Same as despotism in the epic game. Some other goverments in TAM have it as well.

Got ya; thanks again. It's proving to be an excellent MOD. I do find it somewhat more difficult then the original though, what with settlers taking 3 population points rather then 2, and non-fresh water cities maxed out at 4 pre-Aqueduct rather then 6, and a variety of other minor differences. Still, it's a nice change of pace.

Great MOD, love all the ancient civs.

My problem is that once I get around 600 BC the game really, really starts chugging. 5-10 minutes in between turns is the norm. I'm playing without barbarians (hoping that would help), but it's still slow. My computer is 2.4G with 512 RAM so I didn't think it was considered "older", but it must be! :O

Any suggestions on how I can actually play a game to the finish without the long wait? Are there tweaks I can make somewhere?

You could try adding NoAIPatrol=1 to your conquests.ini file to get you thru a slow spot and change it back to "0" if things look like they are speeding back up later on.

What about virus checkers and spyware? These 2 things could be a source of slowdowns. Tell your anti-virus program not to monitor the civ3 folder and its' subfolders and get a good anti-spyware program to make sure you aren't wasting cpu time on that stuff.

You want to have as few programs as possible running in the background. Anything extra in your system tray is wasting memory and cpu time.

Try some routine system maintanence. checkdsk, defrag, etc.

Modern computers will slow down the cpu speed if they overheat. You may want to consider a temp monitoring program to see if the game is overheating the puter.

Alright, so I've gotten a chance to play through a game in its entirety. On the whole, I have to say, an excellent revision to the original rules. So much more variety in each of the civilizations, which is always a bonus.

However, I do have some gripes. Lowering cities to a population cap of 4 before aqueduct is quite stilting to your civilization. So much so that I found a real lag in civilization growth, especially because Architecture is gotten only mid-way through the second age. Additionally, why lower trade houses and marketplaces to the simple one happy face/luxury instead of how they were in the original? Finally, settlers costing 3 citizens instead of two? Why?

In truth, I can understand all of these changes, but I find they just slow down the entire game; I had a real lag period just before the second age where my size 4 cities were really frustrating. Additionally, the beginning of the game is really irritating for expansion when settlers cost so much, especially when you play the game on the higher settings, and the computer manages to cheat itself into multiple cities faster then you could ever dream.

A reversal of these would simply make the game faster, the civs more powerful in general, and in my opinion would equate to more enjoyment.

You speak of a lag period, which you mean metaphorically referring to a stagnation in CIV growth. Truth is, that historically, ancient civilizations were very inhibited by maximum population that could be supported by the land, which is why there was so much migration.

Also, there is the problem of gameplay lag. We used to have it with the original rules, and the late game was absolutely unplayable, because too many units could be supported by huge civs with huge cities. Now it's still laggy in the late period, but not half as bad. ;)

Somehow two of my city populations are yellowed out with a time to grow of "9999", and no matter how I move the production around it stays that way. Any ideas ? The other two cities are fine.

ahh, that's probably it then :) i know at least one of my "good" cities (size 8) is on a river, and i know at least one of my "bad" cities isn't, so i'm guessing that's it. thanks for the info! another reason i thank you for the info is because i stopped playing that game, which was a good game, because i thought it was influenced by a bug. but now i'll go back and finish it up.

Hats off to a great mod!!!

Since I am a German-American I decided to go with the Germanic Tribes and have played through to 65 AD. I ended up settling the area of Southwest Germany and the low countries.

I faced early wars first with the Dacians (attacked warrior and captured settler) and Romans (attacked warrior and captured settler).

The Celts then demanded that I pay tribute and I rejected so I had a war in which the razed one of my cities and I countered by razing one of theirs.

My next war was around 300BC when I turned down a Scythian demand for gold...big mistake...their horses are extremely powerful. They captured and razed one of my cities. The war raged until 100 BC with a countless number of soldiers slewn on the battlefield.

I am now looking at a likely war with the Goths as they are advancing tribal swordsman into my territory...

I will post a little more feedback and a map in the upcoming days...

Thamis,

I tried this last night. It looks great. I got clobbered, though!

Two of the Civ's seem to have three traits -- isn't that unbalancing? It also seemed that my tech lag was greater than in regular civ, but I'm not sure it is critical.

Anyway, it really seems like a great mod!

Thanks,

Breunor

Ah! Thanks Watorrey!

What is the general consensus? Which is better (just curious). I suspect the aanswer is it depends on the wonder in question.

Great concept -- equalize traits to other advantages/disadvantages.

Tried your mod this weekend and was VERY impressed :)
I wanted to know if there are any plans for updated releases of TAM?

Are there any other maps available for this mod and where would I go for them?
