The Bands other than Tom Petty Appreciation Thread!!

I've been listening to The Joy Formidable's album a lot lately. They're from Wales but they are pretty good in spite of that. You get links because every time I've tried to embed videos on this forum it hasn't worked.

The Joy Formidable - Whirring

The Joy Formidable - Austere

The Joy Formidable - A Heavy Abacus

Also because I'm seeing her live on Thursday night, a couple of links to one of my local favorites, the talented Ms. Anya Marina:

Anya Marina - Vertigo

Anya Marina - All The Same To Me

Anya Marina - Miss Halfway

Anya Marina - Whatever You Like (TI cover)

I've been getting into Genesis lately. Man do they have the flair for the epic

Yes, I know this band is pretty big, but it is what it is.

I didn't think anyone would like early Genesis.

My dad is a huge Genesis fan. He loves Selling England By The Pound and Nursery Cryme, but no one I talk to has ever heard those albums before

I don't have those albums, but I do have The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and a compilation album that has a disc of songs from their early albums when Peter Gabriel was in the band.

I've been listening to Radiohead a lot recently (as you no doubt can tell from my avatar), particularly OK Computer and Kid A. Here's the third single from OK Computer, No Surprises.

There's a band called Phish that's pretty decent, I've seen em a few times. (Going to 5 shows this summer, for a total of... maybe 60 shows in the last 14 years?)

Skip to about 3m20s if you want to forego the lyrics and get directly to the jam. The random crowd roar at about 4m in is a response to the beginning of a glowring war.

Yeah, I've just started getting into them. I saw them do a spectacular rendition of Cold Rain and Snow with Phil Lesh. I wanted to go see them at Outside Lands, but the tickets were waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive. :(

<montgomeryburns> Excellent. </montgomeryburns> I hope you realize I'm about to blow up your wall with links.

*rubs hands together, plotting*

BTW, want some shows? :borg:

Oh god!

:cringes:

Yes, I would love some shows!

Hmm I think I may have finally crossed the threshold where I'm such a music nerd that I can't even see the outside point of view. My first thought upon seeing the Phish video posted was "WTH, everyone already knows who Phish are!" Maybe that isn't the case.

Nah, you're right - while they're not popular (thank god), they've been around for over 20 years. By now, their name has seeped into the general consciousness; most people in America under 50 and over 20 have heard of them, even if they've never listened to them.

(My post's tone - "So there's this one band called Phish," etc - was that of cheeky understated humor, given that this thread started as a way to share fairly unknown bands, and then now we're just posting blatantly mainstream musicians.) :)

Weeeeell it's not so much about not posting mainstream musicians so much as it was an attempt to prevent this thread from falling into the same rut that every other one of these threads seems to fall into, i.e. gobs and gobs of Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Petty etc. I think the idea for me was to post musicians that either you (or someone else on here) might not have heard of before, or perhaps a musician you had heard of but never listened to before (like Phish).

Haha yeah I hear ya, I just had to kind of chuckle when I got to Radiohead. ;) Phish is a good example; The Replacements are another - one of those bands that are somewhat familiar names, yet somehow fly under the radar.

Suffice to say, any thread where we discuss music and trade suggestions is a good one, and one where we specifically focus on less-than-household-name bands is even better. :goodjob:

The album this is from (Like Drawing Blood) is fantastic, so much attention to detail and variety in the songs. Highly recommend it...

Not new , not cool , but sometimes I like a break from blues based music , which in many ways all modern popular music is .

In which case I turn to the undisputed kings of English folk rock , Fairport convention . Been around since the 60's and still going . " Liege and Lief " is the seminal album of the era and well worth a listen if you're in a Celtic mood !

The classic lineup contains one of my all time favourite vocalists , Sandy Denny (many of you would have unknowingly heard her as the chick in Led Zepplins " Battle of Evermore" ). Guitarist Richard Thompson is surely one of the greatest exponents of the 6 string mofo in any genre .
