I'm sorry But I was on the wrong general discussion ,....I thought it was the civ II...
Fundam. is the gov. where units do not have much mantainence cost is like a governmant of religouse fanatics and it allows you to buld this kind of units but I 'm not a real expert....

Oh, i know this government, but in CIV 1 it's called Despotism.

OK I do not remember well how works despotism in Civ I but is also in Civ II Fundam. we can say is an improved version of despotism
the problem is that you can't be fast in discovering new techs but you have a grat advantage from money collecting unit support and general unuprising!!
sorry for my english!!

I have to agree about waging wars (

), but Despotism can very often fall behind technologically.

True, you can fall behind technologically. But in a well-run despotism, it doesn't really matter. When you go to war and your military units outnumber those of your opponent 20 to 1, it doesn't matter that most of yours are militia, chariots, legions, etc where your opponent has tanks. It simply doesn't matter.

Hey, I'm not saying that despotism sucks, I'm just telling the truth. In fact, the last game I played - my government was despotism. Just sometimes you don't want to research all that tech, build all those temples to "make people happy", and worry about your funds running low (you just don't have that many city improvements to maintain). If you just want to kick ass - Despotism is the right government.

In other case if you want to take more care of your cities, and be more advanced in tech - use Communism. (I never play under Democracy because it is very hard to be at war: you always have to worry about your people being unhappy and senate never lets you do anything)

Monarchy is cool... I think that it's almost the same thing as Communism, but it doesn't have that "flat corruption" thing. The disadvantage of Communism is that you need to research lots of tech to get it... unless you have pyramids...

Democracy - hands down

Republic-easy,fast money and you get to have a senate

I always go republican as soon as possible and later democratic. I stay republican if there are wars to wage but I don't usually start big wars in the beginning and middle of the game. Then I just expand and make tons of trade routes and if I'm at war I just prepare my border cities for it.

I always use democracy - I know the senate is a beeatch but you can get round that by not talking to anyone after you have tricked them into starting a war with you.

I always build the pyramids - this helps me start a war whenever I like by having a revolution, starting the war then immediately going back into democracy.

It's also good for the early stage of the game - I like to clear my continent of enemies, go democratic and then hunker down while I build up my tech and cash reserves. A few hundred years later my enemies feel really cocky when they land their musketeers and chariots on my land, only to have them crushed by my mighty panzer divisions.

I really hate the way the pyramids work in CIV2

Yup, the Democracy is the best goverment. (Just opinion, dont get mad) You get a lot of
money, and with the pyramids, you can have wars nicely. Homewer, if you don't build
pyramids first, invent all tech and change
to communism. Usually opponents have barely
muskets in that time...

democracy...despotism to democracy was the path I followed generally (though I´m sure NOW I´d experiment MORE with the other governments).

One advance of civ2 was to make more of the governments worth using...lets hope civ3 improves on that too!

It's very interesting to see the support for Communism. I never use it anymore in Civ1. I don't think it's strong enough. In Civ2 it's quite a different matter as it has real power - better martial law, little corruption and veteran spies, and I will often go build the Statue just to get an early Communism and take over the world AND keep the science route open.

Like Supernaut, in Civ1 I tend to go for the Pyramids and then Democracy, going into a temporary revolution every time I want to wage war.

My goal in the beginning of the game is not building the pyramids but if I do or if I capture them, I'll usually switch to Republic... During the ancient times where there's no women's sufferage and no Bach cathedral republic offers a nice way to keep money flowing in but at the same time be militaristic in a way (maybe it'll be even easier if you have the hanging gardens)...

Anyway, I almost never switch to communism, unless I need to wage a long war in modern times or unless I wanna see that fat lady (advisor)

And I really like the negotiation screen when talking to a communist leader, especially that portrait of Lenin in the background
