The Capo's LH Gallery and Self-Help Thread!

I started working on a new Cartimandua, the old one just didn't look right. I kept some of the same elements though. This has no skinning changes on it yet, and I intend on making a bunch of them. But this is the general mock up I had in mind. As usual if anyone has any suggestions or ideas I'd appreciate them.

Looks very impressive as always, but I'm getting the feeling that her body and head aren't aligning exactly (i.e. like the body is a bit to the left?), though it could just be my eye.

Yeah it's a mock-up. For future reference when I say "mock-up" what I mean literally is, "Here are the parts loosely arranged together and a screen shot was taken." So basically nothing is attached to anything else, it's only the pieces I am going to use arranged to look like the finished product. So don't worry about things like that.

I'm doing the rigging right now, so I should have an actual preview up pretty soon. Well maybe, rigging this thing is a pain in the ass because it is a combination of an unclothed body (which will look strange if you don't do it right) and that annoying toga. So we'll see how well I do...

Alright, I'm getting there with Cartimandua. I decided to try out some different textures, so this is the first one I whipped up. I changed the color of the toga to look more "celtic," I'm not sure how accurate any of this is, but I figured I'd try some new thinsg just so it doesn't look so much like the old Dido. Here's the first texture I came up with. What do you think? Any suggestions or criticism would be appreciated here because I'm kind of at a loss myself.

EDIT: The only thing I'm worried about is that there might be "too much going on," but I don't know.

I like the basic design, but I also agree with your assessment that there is "too much going on." My primary suggestion to solve that is to narrow down your choice of fabric patterns. You can start by making the lower part of the robe the same darker color as the upper part. Then, you might consider doing something to make the cloak and the "tartan" part blend or compliment each other.

I think I'll probably just go with my original texture (basically what you saw in the first mock-up preview I showed, but with a dark green cape and a white toga. I think that will wind up looking better, and it should fit better with the background I have in mind. I just figured I'd try out something different, and it didn't really pan out well. I'll post a screen tomorrow after the football game, provided I'm not wasted.

Looks really good. I think once you're done with her, I'll do some reskinning and add a few stuff and use her as Theodora.

The tartan is historically anachronistic, anyway. It existed for a long time, but it didn't become popular anywhere until after the Renaissance.

Capo, I made a temporary fix for Askia Mohammed. I think you should upload it. I went the easy way and just assigned his right hand to his torso, so it doesn't really move.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it and I'll probably post it. I know this LH was heavily anticipated, so until I get around to fixing it (I obviously have a lot on my plate right now) I suppose it could suffice. I'll plan on posting it when I get finished with the four I'm working on now, which should be sometime this weekend. :goodjob:

Cool. Believe me, this fix could also be final, because it doesn't make the LH look worse IMO.

I just want to make sure he doesn't look to stiff, that's all. Plus I know someone is going to demand that I animate his arms. After I look at it I'll make a decision.

Only the right arm doesn't move. The left one moves.

I think I'm done with Clovis, I just have to play a few games against him just to make sure. I added a sword to the LH, although I don't know if its placement really makes sense (I think the Franks kept their sword in a hilt on the side of their hip rather than on their backs, although they did keep ceremonial swords for special occasions and ma have worn them on their backs), but I think it looks cool and I like the flur de lis on it because of it sort of foreshadows what happens historically. The Franks actually did use the Flur de Lis themselves too.

So anyway here he is, with shaders and everything. Any last thoughts?

EDIT: I am still kinda looking for a background, I have no idea what the building in the background of this is but it is certainly not Frankish and I don't think it even fits the period (around 500 ad).

You know, if you still want to keep the current Background, you could just crop the castle out (and yes, it doesn't fit the period).

Pretty nice overall, but I think you are planning to get rid of that blackish blotch on the guy's forehead?

Well, maybe you know this, but if I remember correctly, the Franks (especially early on) had a unique hairstyle where they'd shave half their head but keep the other half a ponytail or something like that (sort of like the Chinese ponytail except not as long). If you feel like it, you could just take away half his hair and leave some, er, shaved head or whatever. If that makes any sense.
