With Guild Wars 2 looming on the horizon and the release of a the Hall of Monuments Calculator which tells you how many points, items, and titles you have earned from your Guild Wars exploits to pass down to your Guild Wars 2 characters, I figured we needed a thread.

The calculator.

My character is a level 20 Warrior/Paragon named Jasper Hawkeyed and he is playing through the Nightfall campaign right now. My friend and I inherited an old guild he had joined, the Imperial Guards of Balthazar. So far its us two, and another friend who doesn't have a computer currently.

I used to play that game. I used to play it a lot. I have since wiped my hands clean of it, and I don't intend to reopen that Pandora's Box any time soon.

I have the Complete Collection box set. I only have one character at the moment, a ranger/mesmer at level 10 on the Prophecies campaign.

I've been tempted to try Guild Wars 1 but... I haven't...

I'm really looking forward to Guild Wars 2 though. I hope it comes out before next summer. It will right? ...

Next November-ish afaik.

I like how Guild Wars combines an Action RPG with the strategic challenge of finding a good skill setup for a given situation. There isn't much actual roleplaying going on though, and missions are more "follow the green arrow" instead of unfolding a story (at least that's how most people play a game; you never find a group were people actually in-character). However, taken for what it is, it's a fun game with lots of things to do. :)

My oldest character is a necromancer, and I played her back in the time when necros were considered a totally useless class. Made it a bit difficult to get into groups at times, but it was great being taken along in a group that expected your character to be useless, and then surprise everyone. ;)

I started a new character for Prophecies, a necromancer named Hel Hawk (Hel as in the norse goddess). Currently running around doing a bunch of sidequests for the xp and to see the idyllic conutryside before the 'searing'.

My friend and I have almost finished the Nightfall campaign but are looking for other players to join us for the Gate of Madness mission.

And especially this guy:

We are hoping to get through it (and the final mission of Nightfall afterwards) on next Monday the 15th and any help is appreciated. The time will be probably at around 3 or so PM Pacific Standard Time.

Please reply here/PM me/add me in game (Jasper Hawkeyed).

Oh! stuck at the Lich/Shiro are you? The strategy is to lock them down in that chokepoint door and then focus down The Lich. Make sure you keep everyone nice and spread out too. Once The Lich is down, it's a simple enough prospect to run to all of the shrines, picking up the bonuses, and once that has happened killing of Shiro is a simple prospect. (May be the other way around, I can't remember as it has been ages since I beat Nightfall.)

Heh, I beta'd this game years ago for like 8 months. Those open weekends were a blast, but by the time the game actually went commercial, I was tired of it. Never did like the "learn all these skills but only use 6 of them" crap. That and the obnoxiously low level cap and focus on PVP (at the time, dunno how it's evolved) made it less and less replayable, so I never went back.

We did that but he is a sob to take down, especially with just two of us and 6 NPC heroes.

Are you flagging yo heroes? Especially with Shiro's skillset.

I have no idea what you mean. I pretty much set them up the way my friend told me too (since he's played the game on and off since it came out and its the only MMORPG I've ever been interested since RuneScape in middle school).

By flagging, he means to position your heroes around Shiro so that they don't draw his aggro. One of the best ways to beat him is to have a tank binding his aggro, and place others around the two (not to close together, to minimize casualties in case Shiro does approach them) which keep the tank alive or damage Shiro. It's a bit difficult to pull off with heroes or a pick-up group, but possible. The tank should have stance removal. But if your friend is playing GW on and off, he'll probably know all that.

When I was still playing my necro, I usually went into this mission with Pain inverter, Spoil Victor, Insidious Parasite, and perhaps another cover hex. This works well with a tank who can take the blows. There's another approach to this mission which focuses on keeping Shiro blinded; with this approach, the above skills aren't as useful, as they won't trigger as often.

It's definitely a tough mission for only two human players. If you can't make it now, another option is to look up when it becomes a Zaishen mission next time, and hop into a PUG then. Though take care to take one where the leader asks for skill sets and coordinates them (a badly coordinated PUG is worse than having 6 NPCs in the group).

I've still got a week before the jobs starts back up so I decided to give this game a whirl; I liked the original back on the day and subscription fees are the reason I've never played any other MMORPGs.

Enjoying the game a lot. It's a big improvement on the original, and I've heard it compares well with more expensive games in the genre. Anyone else playing?

Impulse bought it this weekend. Already regret it.

It's certainly not terrible, but gameplay doesn't feel like it's an improvement over WoW. I think they were going for a more chaotic feel with the game, but it ends up just feeling messy. It could easily be that I'm missing some of the nuance, but I'm a pretty experienced gamer and I'm just not seeing it.

So now that Guild Wars 2 has been released, I've finally got it downloaded, but I can't play it yet :/ I really dislike having to choose a home server since now I have to wait for my friend whom I will play the most with to reply back about what server they are on :/ I liked Guild Wars 1's lack of "home" servers, it certainly made it easier to play with friends (a major reason I bought this game in the first place).
