The Classic Maya 2016-10-05

lol, everytime I get close to completing a game,
a new version comes out. I think I will try to finish
the one I started before I d/l newest version.

anyway, thanks for making this..

I was attempting to get one-city a cultural win as Copán, and guess what happens? Tikal gets on a roll, and hits the civilizational culture limit. :crazyeye:

The lesson being, I suppose, that the Grand Ballcourt in the hands of a big civ is too strong. It puts a Ballcourt (+2cpt, +25% production) in every city, which is just too good. Maybe I'll create an improvement to the Ballcourt (a Ballmaker?) that adds a further +25% production but requires a Ballcourt in the city to be built, and have the Grand Ballcourt place that in all eligible cities. If anyone has another idea, I'm all ears.

Also, the Raider will be back down to 5.1.2 in the next version. I discovered that the AI wasn't building it not because it thought it too weak but because of what appears to be a refusal to build non-enslaving attackers when enslaving ones are available* - the Enslave ability used to be accidentally unchecked on the Raider, as you may recall. Having the attack back down at five makes the Yajaw K'ak' (A=7) a clearly superior attacker again (40% stronger rather than 17%) with the Raider chiefly valuable for speed and the chance to retreat.

* This should imply that the AI Maya never builds Swordsmen in epic C3C. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I did a fortress in a similar style too:

Spot the hills with little thickets of pine on?

I'm using LM Mountains to introduce a new terrain type called "Highlands" - it mimics hills in productive capacity, but being underlayingly mountains, yu can't settle on it. I'm using it to get a more aesthetically pleasing look to the Maya Highlands, Honduran and Pacific piedmont areas.

v0.81 is up :)

The chief new thing, of course, is the new highland terrain, with some associated other map changes. Gameplaywise, the chief effect is that some possible city spots in Chiapas and the Isthmian area are gone. Some rain forests have also been added to the Motagua valley.

Also, the Raider returns to 5(5).1.2 stats, as already mentioned. The AI still builds it.

Some additions to graphics and the 'Pedia. Frex, the Sajal's House, Epic Inscription, and Reservoir now have 'pedia pics matching their city building icons.

The Grand Ballcourt is not addressed, because I've not decided how to deal with it.

I've pretty much decided to add a "powerplant" improvement that increased the production boost from Ballcourts, and have the Grand Ballcourt place that in all cities instead, but I don't know what I'll call it - the ideas I've got are "Ballmaker" and "Trophy Rack". Anyone has any preference or other suggestions?

Apart from toning down the Grand Ballcourt a bit, this should boost the prospects for a builder approach a little.

What remains of the tech icon list:

Royal Inscriptions: Glyphs.

Warrior Cult: I need ideas for this one.

Fortifications: Wall or tower with a look-out on.

Navigation: Ships.

Pyramids: Pyramids.

Collective Rule: A Maya noble and a Toltec standing next to one another? (Thinking Chichén Itzá here.)

Total War: Burning village, or pillagers.

Edit: I got an entirely different idea for an icon for Divine Monarchy, which I promptly implemented.

If you could make another one with a martial motive, I could replace the current one I have for Militarism, which I don't much like. Fortifications for Fortification would also be nice.

I'll handle Royal Inscriptions myself, I think; I have an idea that could work out well.

I might end up using your conflagration for Total War, but I'd like it better if it was more clear it is a village burning. :)

Many thanks for your help and enthusiasm. :hatsoff:

Addendum: OK, in order of decreasing priority, I'd be very happy if you made 'pedia pictures for Fortifications, Collective Rule, Total War, and Militarism. I'd also like ones for the Anarchy and Dynasticism gov'ts (Divine Monarchy and Aristocracy use those for the corresponding techs).
