italy was the littlest of Great Powers , in 1916 Greeks were not in the fight , there was no more "free" land in the world to trade . I really do think that Rome and the Russian-Orthodox Church were strongly against the Greek-Orthodox Church getting back Constantinople as true successor of the Roman empire. The influence of the Churches onthe establishments in Europe so much stronger then. And Greece also a much more theocratic state at that moment than many people would be aware of now.

Eu isn't needed to defend Greece, you can believe turkish tv if you feel like it, but your fleet is rather low tier and could have been sunk already. I suppose you then can try advancing troops through the land border, cause thousands of tanks aren't an issue.
A more serious problem is that although neither Greece nor Turkey produce top level guns (like airplanes etc), Greece isn't the one having conflicts with other regional powers.

And yes... the EU prefers a stable Turkey bordering towards the Middle-East

The thing is a bit like having US troops in your country like South Korea, or here in Europe in some countries.

ı believe you have been to Turkey a few times , might have seen the Galata Tower in lstanbul ? Built by Genoans back in the day , used as a firewatch location later on , a tourist thing at the latest . The State took its responsibility / ownership from the Metropolitan which had it for ages , but dispensing contracts and hence money is what it is about and it needed "restoration" and hence they got a company and the company let loose workers with the jackhammer . You can't expect Erdogan to necessarily be fluent in Greek, even though all the Ottoman Grand Viziers had to be, to deal with their powerful Phanariote high bureaucrats and functionaries (and know whether or not they were plotting against him).
