The G8 Summit

Hey man, I'm pretty sure the bike-powered sound system is the same one I used to see at Glasto (when it was free), and at various reclaim the streets protests. It's pretty cool.

I can't give you any specific group names besides attac, about which you find out alot more on their website.

As I am not part of that movement I am not so much into it that I could name other organizations, but I know that often members of various broader organizations (political parties, environmentalists like Greenpeace, etc.) subscribe to this cause as well.

What unites them is the point of view that globalization will be harmful to people in the developing world (attac), the developed world (leftist parties) and the environment (environmentalists).

Now one might agree with that or not, but it's unfair to claim they would only be "in it" for the riots.
Yes indeed. In fact I realise I have identified many of the peaceful groups in post #41.

So is it too simplistic to blame the violence on anarchist groups (cos it is obviously not anti-globalisation groups)? The only people I know who subscribe to being anarchists is a poster on here, who's a great bloke, and another guy I knew in real life who went round beating up Neo-Nazis. I can't really fit the two anarchists I know to the people who were smashing up Scotland this morning. I guess I need some 'idiot's guide to anarchy' or something.

Not exactly violent thugs...
yes they are. They will fling flowers at me, and kill me. Plus my bullets have no effect on them.

FYI, that was a Simpsons reference.

Perhaps you are one of them, because you are an "anarchist settler". :mischief:
You know, that name did have a reason behind it, and it's the reason it's been in my title since I registered here. :)

I'm almost wanting to change it to "anarchist scum", since people would probably identify with that easier... :(

Edit: Ram, your guide will come another time. :) For the moment, read "The Disposessed" by Ursula Le Guin and you'll maybe understand anarchism is about governance, not violence.

I have a photo of me chatting to the guy who rides that thing! :goodjob:

Umm, that is a whole new thread. Just a surface scraping of the issue would take a long time to adequatly explain, since there are many compounding issues.

Maybe Ram and his never-ending source of good info can help?

Will do that.

What is so bad about Globalisation? From what I can gather, this is what most of the People are protesting about.
People making money whilst not being that fair to those in poorer countires that work for them (think nike and sweatshops). This is how business has run for centuries, people making lots of money whilst the bottom level workers get screwed over. but now its global, so apparently that makes it evil.

Arguably, the problem in that regard is a simple "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" phenomena. Deplorable working conditions were quite visible in 18th century England and thus led to reforms. With the abused workers on the other side of the world without a voice, it is much easier to oppress them.

From the protests I've seen (CNN) there were a lot of hammer and sickle flags.
 You guys still have a problem with communists don't you? We haven't seen a single one on any on our coverage.

i hope the police beat those protesters good
Agreed. I hope that the next summit takes place on a battleship or aircraft carrier or something. That'll show how we'll deal with the protestors.

Just watched the BBC 6 o'clock news:

6.00 - 6.02: Headlines and intro.
6.02 - 6.17: London wins the Olympics.
6.17 - 6.25: G8 summit - of which 3 mins on violence and police, 5 mins on policies and possible outcomes.

:shakehead

Where is the anger at the violent hooligans who are ruining this event for all the peaceful protesters who had a message that is now being obscured by these violent extremists? Why is the anger instead being directed at the police?
Rage against the Machine is an easier philosophy to live by than sympathy for the devil is.

They'll have to return to Banff's mountain stronghold again next year.

You kidding? I'd be the first one out there handing out hammer and sickle flags for the protests. The more of those people see, the more they realize how asinine their protest is.
