The GOP plan to block your vote

Any sort of attempt to combat this sort of voter fraud with some sort of national ID card or something seems more expensive than its worth, even if you don't think it's actually meant disenfranchise certain potential voters

It's not required. Just show your driver's license (or ID) at the door. Simple problem solved. If you don't have one, that's your own fault. This is really more about illegals voting than it is other types of electoral fraud.

Illegals aren't trying to vote. And not all people want to have a drivers license, or can.

I'll take your word for that.

And not all people want to have a drivers license, or can.

You don't have to, just get a state ID. Don't want that, work ID works if it has a picture and expiration date, though still current (in Tennessee). There are options.

A number of the states have been making it much too difficult to do that for many people.

What if I don't want a driver's license? What if I am an illegal with one? What if I know that the little old lady trying to vote is eligible, but she left her license at home. Should I let her vote?

Anyway, it seems we are moving far from our founding principles. You didn't need a photo id to vote for George Washington.

1. I already gave the alternatives.
2. If you're illegal, you've gotten away with it, not every crime gets punished.
3. No. She should you should have been responsible enough to remember it. Further if you drove there, you should have been responsible enough to take it with you. When I go to work, I remember both my license and TDOC badge, because without both, I can't go to work. If you want to do something, then have the common sense to follow the prerequisites.

@cutlass - why, because people aren't smart enough to have their birth certificate at home or in a safety deposit box? If you cannot get the required materials you have only yourself to blame.

Correct, but the motor voter law that allowed people to register at the DMV of all places was signed in 1993. If you can register in the same place you get an ID or driver's license, why can't you get one of the other two?
I can't imagine Thomas Jefferson thinking one needs to deal with the DMV to be able to vote. Guess he didn't really foresee the modern nanny state and its proponents.

That's total BS. A birth certificate is not acceptable proof for voting. It does not tell where the current address is. And is not a photo ID. State IDs are difficult to get because the states make them difficult to get. Voter ID laws ban multiple types of perfectly valid IDs, such as college IDs and other easy to get ID types.

You are blaming the victims here. The states are the criminals.

I'll agree with that, I'm just saying it is what it is. It's a lot easier for you and me than it was for Jefferson to prove you are who the voter card says you are.

Edit: @ cutlass - never said it was. But the reason most complain of harder to get licenses and IDs is because they require a birth certificate to get one. When I moved to Tennessee I needed it to get my license changed. Good thing I was smart enough to make sure I always had a copy available. Sits in my safety deposit with my other vital documents.

Edit Edit: BTW - what victims and what criminals?

You keep dodging the point. The state are throwing completely pointless obstacles in the way of people having IDs. That makes the states criminals. You are blaming the victims. The people that are being screwed by the state actions.

If you're too black or poor to vote you've only yourself to blame. :smug:

Sorry, early voting is being rolled back too.

We need to change this! Illegal immigrants should be allowed to vote Democrat before they even get into America. That will foil the evil Republicans and their sinister plot to steal christmas :D

Quick! Everybody rush out and vote Democrat before those evil Republicans strip you of your vote!

The Democrats aren't the ones setting up voting roadblocks. This you cannot deny.

It's not about illegals voting. Illegals aren't voting and can't vote. But this point has been beaten to death already so...

Perhaps a few examples of what these laws are doing might help focus the discussion again. These are the people that Republicans don't want voting:

Wisconsin Voter ID Law May Force 84-Year-Old Woman To Pay $200 To Get A Voter ID

“It’s really crazy,” she added. “I’ve got all this proof. You mean to tell me that I’m not a U.S. citizen?” But state officials have informed Frank that, because the state Register of Deeds does have a record of her birth, they can issue her a new birth certificate — for a fee. And because of a spelling error, that fee may be as high as $200

96-Year-Old Chattanooga Woman Denied Voting ID

Dorothy Cooper is 96 years old, and she can only remember one election when she was eligible to vote, but didn’t.

The retired domestic worker was born in a small North Georgia town before women had the right to vote. She began casting ballots in her 20s after moving to Chattanooga for work. She missed voting for John F. Kennedy in 1960 because a move to Nashville prevented her from registering in time.
