The GOP plan to block your vote

This only discriminates against the lazy, no specific groups. I think it should be much harder to vote and the standards should be raised greatly. I worked at a polling station last year. There was a drunk 40 year old who voted for the first time. He later came back and wanted to change his vote since he voted for a party he detested. I asked him why he voted that way and he said I guy outside told him exactly what to and that ended up with him voting for that party.

Is this how countries should be run? How wars should be decided and laws written?

Oh, sure. Your average rural conservative is a bastion of world knowledge.

Of which many can't find Afghanistan on a map, but they still decide if the country should be bombed or not.

How many of these people actually care? How involved are these people? They don't care at all.

Obviously, we must all place our trust in Friend Computer.

Exactly, old grumpy people with low IQs are running the country. The people with an iq less than 100 are half the votes. Shocking. Running a nation is complicated and is best done by those with a strong interest in running the community.

I say the rule should be:

You must have served your country. Either civilian and military service. You need a high school diploma and to show a willingness to help your community. There should also be a test in political science and economics required to vote.

A country run by good people who love their community and willing to work hard for it will be much better than a nation run by crackheads, criminals and people who don't care.

Yes.

Why? Such a job shows no evidence of intelligence or committment. It merely shows a person who wants a job. And found a government job.

to show a willingness to help your community
How do you show this? I would say the very process of voting hsows a willingness to help the community.

There should also be a test in political science and economics required to vote.
Who designs and marks these tests? Basically you will have politicians deciding that you must have a certain viewpoint, or lie about your views, to vote.
And why economics? Why not history or foreign relations or engineering or accounting or medicine or. literally, every other field. All of them are part of the government's mandate and can be more important than basic eonomics.

Why are corporations run by highly qualified people and not your average drunkard? Why isn't the military run by the newly recruited soldiers?

Most people don't even know what they are deciding upon.

Now you are just being disengenuous.
A voter is not equivalent to a corporate executive or a military officer.
Any drunk who buys a voting share can take part in electing the board of directors. And the same drunkard who votes in elections determines who is in command of the military

That's the price of democracy mang.

Yeah, like others have said, they've been doing this since the 50s, under the guise of preventing "voter fraud". Their electoral calculus works best at smaller voter turnout models. Luckily, voters in some states, like Maine, have attempted to fight back at some of these stupid laws.

Yeah, pretty much this.

As outrageous as this is, a quick glance at the article tells me that most of the states in which these laws are being passed would never vote Democrat anyway (Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Kansas, Arizona...).

Some of those states used to have large numbers of populists/democratic voters. The evangelicals converted them to Republicans after legal abortion and gay marriage became big issues.

It's going to be fun working as a poll watcher in the most conservative county in Texas fighting to deny likely Republicans the rightprivilege to vote.

They are trying that in Minnesota, but since the Republican speaker is leaving in disgrace after an extamarital affair (but unfortunately, it wasn't a sordid and steamy lesbian love affair) they may run into some leadership issues after they have burned most of their bridges.

Placing artificial restrictions on voting rights like that can only end with those excluded from the vote being persecuted by the government for the benefit of those that can vote.

Why would people who don't care be voting?

I say the rule should be: only people who share my political opinions should be allowed of vote. People should be able to show some common sense in elections and if they disagree with me, they clearly don't have it.

Would a person from Africa be a racist if he didn't want millions of Europeans to move to his country? Is a person from Tibet a racist if he doesn't want Tibet to be swamped with Han chinese?
If that's their sole reason, yes.

<snip>
Why would people who don't care be voting?
Because we are supposed to vote. How many of these people have a big interest in politics? How many would attend a demonstration or spend time working to improve their society? Local democracy with good voters is the best way to run a society.

I like the way some of the ancients ran things. Gather all respectable citizens in the town square, debate and than have direct democracy.

You know that's impossible with a country of a certain size.

You know that's impossible with a country of a certain size.

Gigantic nation states are a relatively new and failed experiment. They are by nature corrupt and controlled by an elite. The people don't run Washington, Washington is run by lobbyists, wall street and wall street controlled media.

Societies need to be local.

Voter fraud isn't even a real issue. Since the major crackdowns that began during the Bush administration years ago, only a few hundred have been charged, with much less than that actually being convicted. Not enough to affect most local elections, let alone national ones.

Any sort of attempt to combat this sort of voter fraud with some sort of national ID card or something seems more expensive than its worth, even if you don't think it's actually meant disenfranchise certain potential voters
