Braces are a common element in todays society. However, not very many people know about braces' fascinating history. After painstaking research*, I have come up with important discoveries.
Braces were developed in the Mideval Ages as a device in torture chambers. Interrogators would attach metal wires to a victim's teeth and wrap the wires around small hooks which they embedded in the victim's gumline. As the interrogator would come across a point in which the victim refused to talk, he would wrap the wires tighter around the victim's teeth. Eventually, the pain was so great that the victim would break and talk - or else the teeth would break and he could not talk, for which both were executed - the interrogator for not extracting the information.
Near the end of the middle ages, the device was built on. Spikes that rubbed up against inner lips were added. However, as time went on and the victim ate, the food would dull the pain caused by the spikes. To remedy this situation, interrogators would promise the victims less torture if they underwent a rigorous hygenial process involving scrubbing the braces and running strings inbetween the braces and the teeth, and rinsing their mouths with chemically-altered water. The effect was that the pain was renewed as all the food that blocked the spikes was removed.
At the end of the Mideval Ages, a prisoner with buck teeth was questioned about conducting espionage. He broke sooner than expected, but what amazed the torture master was that the braces straightened his teeth. Paranoid about the whole matter, the king ordered all people responsible for that particular interrogation executed. The bowmen hesitated, but did strike the king, who after all ordered the interrogation in the first place. This ended the Mideval Ages because, well, I already said it was the end of the Mideval Ages, didn't I?
The art of braces is now perfected today. These modern versions are not quite as frightening to look at, but they have been made even more painful then ever before. Braces are no longer tightened continuously so the torture can last upwards of 30 months, getting tightened every 6 weeks.
