The many questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread XIV

A wire article?

Im not sure.

I'm not sure I understand the question. You don't mean "syndicated," do you? The AP and Reuters are news agencies; they employ reporters who develop news stories and other articles, and their content is licensed by newspapers or other news outlets. (In the AP's case, some of those outlets are members of the AP, and others can license articles as subscribers.)

A syndication service is different than a news agency, though; a syndicate doesn't produce the content itself, but generally own or represent the copywrights of independent writers, cartoonists, or other contributors.

I mean when going through Google News Archives I saw the same article in several papers like those short celebrity ones on the margins.

I remember seeing on the CNN news ticker a few weeks ago saying that a "female police chief" was "killed in Mexico".

Was that the same college student girl who made news for being the only applicant to apply for her town's police chief position? (I remember there being a thread on her when she was given the job)

The newly appointed female police chief of the northern Mexican town of Meoqui was shot and killed on her way to work by a convoy of gunmen who reportedly worked for drug traffickers, authorities said.

Hermila Garcia Quinones, 38, was sworn in on Oct. 9 as chief of the 90-person police force. Despite the growing drug-related violence in the region, "La Jefa," as Garcia Quinones was known, refused to have bodyguards or carry a weapon

soes I assume it is not the "college girl" from before.

Now, after next week I have my winter break. The past 2 winter breaks I've had I've played pokemanz (red or blue; I can consider yellow).

This year I want to make it more special. Now, generally, I play every game as a bit of a "speed run" (ie I don't really catch pokemon except for the ones I plan to use; I catch ~15 pokemon) and I try to play everygame with a different lineup (including ditching my pikachu in pokemon yellow because I had played blue or red with a raichu the previous game).

So, should I
a) try to play it in one day (speed run!)
or b) simply play with a mew, since I have never done that before.

This conversation came up in a documentary. Nobodys ever given me a clear answer on what it means. Any idea?

"I met Stan Lynch on the corner of 13th and University Avenue in Gainesville, Florida on his sixteenth birthday, on his knees, and on ..."
"No, no, no, don't say anything. Omit a few details."

Quick question:
Is foreign GDP calculated using their currency or American dollars?

Where you see it reported, you'll see what currency it is reported in. The actual calculations could be made before or after the currency conversion, depending on who is doing the calculations.

Has anyone gotten a passport before (I'm sure many of you have). What's involved in that? I did a google search, but I'm still confused. It mentions getting 2 passport style photos, I have no idea how to obtain that. And then they want you to photocopy all your id's (I can do that at work I suppose). But I'm thinking of using an expediater service. But I'm still confused on those.

I could use the how to get a passport for dummies version if anyone could answer that.

I'm clueless on all this. the times I have been to Europe etc. I was military, and didn't need a passport.

In Britain, we have handy photo-booths which take passport-suitable photos. Your local post office might well have the forms and info necessary to apply for a passport.

As an Amiercan you're not required to have a passport because USA #1 just go to customs and show them your Americaness and they will let you in.

Is it true that "Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116" is pronounced "Albin"?

Allegedly, Aimee, though you could simply have Googled that.

Well, I got my passport as a minor, so there may be some differences.
However, I went to Kinkos, they took my two passport pictures and set things up for the City Hall (where I went to get them processed). You have to bring your basic ID papers and such.
You write out a check or two and a couple weeks later you get your passport.

Go to the Post Office and get the forms. You'll need an official birth certificate. And I forget which other ID. You fill out the form, give them a couple copies of the official photo you have to have taken someplace, give them money, and send it off. They have (or had a couple years ago when I got mine) limits on the forms of payment they take. Fill out the forms, take them and everything they require back to the Post Office, and they'll take a month or 2 to decide if you deserve one and get it made up.

I have a US passport related question.

An American friend of mine showed me her passport and I had great fun laughing at how over-the-top the design was. The pages were plastered in the Stars and Stripes and there was even a huge eagle head in there too. It was like it was designed by Patroklos.

But anyways my question is do all American passports look like this, or was I looking at some sort of patriotic personalised one?

They've changed the design a few times. The idea is to make them impossible to counterfeit. That's why the complexity. I got mine shortly before the latest rule change and redesign. So it's not the same as that, but it still is a very complex looking page.
