Can businesses in the US refuse payment in coins? Like say I buy something that is $5 and pay for it all in dimes. Can they refuse to accept it?

I suppose they probably could if they had a good reason (probably even if they didn't have one as well). I would think its similar to businesses being able to refuse certain credit cards such as American Express, even if the reason for refusal isn't the same.

No. Legal tender for all debts public and private.

MATLAB question:

Do .bmp files have an rgb?

I'm doing my matlab homework w/ imaging, and when I imread in a bmp file, the size returns 1 layer

ie when I do
image = imread('stuff.bmp');
[row column layers] = size(image) %returns layers as 1

So the course has been telling us how every image is a 3d array with three layers (RGB obviously) but .bmp files appear to be a 2D array/matrix (not rgb with three layers)?

ie. .jpg is a 3d matrix, .png is a 3d matrix, etc. But .bmp seems to be 2d.

Again, not really legal. You make a purchase, you pay in legal tender, they have no legal right to refuse the payment.

On the other hand, sometimes they just don't have enough change on hand. Now that's fun. That's what often happens as gas stations and convenience stores. :p They have drop safes that the cashier cannot open so that robbers cannot get much money.

BMP files have a header describing the format to follow.

If it has a palette, the palette info follows in RGB format, followed by the palette index for each colour.

If it doesn't, the pixel data follows in the format given by the header, e.g. 16 bits per pixel, 32 bits per pixel, etc. The RGB is packed into the pixel data.

There is some extra complication with alignment of each pixel row, and the pixel data is upside down:crazyeye:

Over here there is a difference between limited legal tender and unlimited legal tender.

Limited legal tender are coins - a company does not have to accept coins in settlement of a debt over a certain value if it doesn't want to.

Unlimited legal tender are notes - a person cannot refuse these as settlement of a debt.

No shirt
No shoes
No service

Not everywhere accepts $2 bills.

Nobody expects the Treasury Department! They will MAKE the store accept the Jefferson Dollar!! (aka the $2 bill). Yes, dispite what people say, a $2 bill is a legal tender in the US. It's just that they are rare. When I come across a $2 bill (weather it's old or new), I store it in a safe place.

What kind of firearm can I own within the law?

From Wiki:

With a few specialised exceptions, all firearms in the United Kingdom must be licensed on either a firearm certificate (FAC) or a shotgun certificate.

UK law defines a 'rifle' as a rifled gun with a barrel longer than 30 cm and a total length longer than 60 cm. Revolver rifles in all calibres are permitted. Other semi-automatic or pump-action rifles are allowed, but they must be in chambered for .22 rim-fire rounds. Other rifles, single-shot, bolt-action, martini-action or otherwise are permitted as are air rifles using self contained gas cartridges.

UK law defines a 'pistol' as a gun with a barrel shorter than 30 cm or a total length of less than 60 cm. All pistols must be muzzle loading to be permitted. Revolver pistols are permitted. Semi-automatic or pump action pistols are permitted, but they must be chambered for .22 rim-fire rounds. All other pistols, single shot or otherwise are permitted.
Some UK gun dealers get around these stringent restrictions, however, by making permanent modifications to the gun, lengthening the barrel to the required 30 cm and attaching a fixed stock, or even simply a metal rod, extending from the grip of the gun away from the barrel, so the total length is the required 60 cm. These weapons are treated by law as rifles.

Shotguns are defined essentially as smoothbore rifles by UK law. Revolver shotguns are permitted, but must be either muzzle loading or chambered for 9mm rim-fire rounds. Other semi-automatic or pump-action shotguns are permitted, but if the barrel is shorter than 24 inches or the total length less than 40 inches, they must be chambered for .22 rim-fire rounds. Other shotguns, lever-action, double-barrelled or otherwise are permitted.

Explosive, incendiary, noxious (biological, chemical), expanding (hollow point, JHP) and armour piercing (jacketed, FMJ) ammunition types are prohibited.

In the UK, fully-automatic or burst-fire weapons are strictly prohibited. This includes air guns. Firearms disguised as another item are prohibited. Rockets and mortars are prohibited.

Personally I could go for some mortars on my front lawn. They'd be handy for when those dudes come around with their industrial strength leaf-blowers :goodjob:

If i tried to speak what i wrote here (Learning spanish) would the incorrect grammar make me sound like an idiot to a native spanish speaker? Looking for some input here! My teacher is cold and relentless with grading. :(

What would happen if you went to a foriegn country and tried to renounce your citizenship at your countries embassy there. Would you be able to stay in the country you are in? For an example, let's say it is a U.S citizen renouncing his citizenship in the U.K or Canada.

I believe you'd become a stateless person unless you could convince the country you were in to grant you refugee status.
