So long as the sub components aren't dusty, the wiring isn't shorting, and there is at least some modicum of airflow - if it's overheating it's getting too much power delivered to it for too long. =/

What effect does resolution have on a PC game and said game's performance.

Increasing the resultion can do a few different things (or combination of things) depending on the game. It simply increases the number of dots on your screen which can allow for more details to be shown.

Most notably:

On some games (particularly strategy games) it shrinks everything and increases your screen area. This increases apparent texture quality because everything is smaller.

It can also just increase the detail on textures while maintaining everything at the same size. This improves how the game looks if the game has textures that are good enough, but can sometimes make bad texture work more apparent decreasing the quality.

If you select a resolution that does not match your screen's aspect ratio games will often stretch to fit it making things look ugly.

Because your computer will be redering more (be it detail or objects) it will decrease performance, but this decrease will vary between games, computers and resolutions.

You also must remember that there is a maximum resolution your screen can support and anything above that will have ne benefit for the graphics.

Are you serious, or do you just want to know our responses? :hmm:

Anyway, say covered pretty much all of it.

Note that performance will decrease exponentially as your resolution increases, due to more and more pixels being pushed to the screen.

you brought up a good point about dust (a problem in my house), while I have blown out my computer from time to time, I have never blown out my amp/subwoofer. I'm not sure if I can easily do that without taking it apart, however.

I was actually interested in how big an effect on performance would decreasing the resolution would be. And what the effects would be on what I see: e.g. does the interface get screwed up?

The performance difference will depend on the game, your system, and the resolutions. The only way to know how it will affect you is to try it and see.

The interface shouldn't get screwed up (though it may be larger) if the game supports the new resolution because any resolution option within the game should have been tested, of course not every game is well made and well tested. However, as with any aspect of computer games, you specific mix of hardware and software could create a unique issue at random resolutions. This is unlikely but it can happen.

If you are forcing a resolution not supported by the game, it may or may not screw up the UI (or the entire game) and the only way to know is to try it and see. Otherwise, the biggest risk to the UI is that you select an aspect ratio different from your screen and strethc everything horizontal or vertically.

For other aspects, it is just the opposite of above, you could just have everything bigger and show less on the screen and/or everything is the same size but with less texture detail.

Really, when playing with settings to affect performance the only thing you can reliably do is try it and see.

Zooming in on higher resolutions will take care of the lag that one gets when zoomed out at the same resolution. If one is zoomed out all the time, they may not need that high of a resolution, since they may not be as particular on the details.

VERY NEEDED

Is there some program or something that recognizes and changes (automatically preferably) music files so that they are same volume level... so that while listening to tracks form different albums and quality it won't jump from too loud to too low???

Trying to make some play lists to enjoy in the car. Don't have that problem when listening on PC as most players have "sound check" feature, but have a problem with this when burning CD's or copying to flash disc...

So, what's the popular consensus (or more importantly professional opinion if we have a physician online) about alcohol and painkillers ?
I twisted my ankle about three hours ago and it just now started to really hurt.
I was also stupid enough to have two glasses of wine with dinner, which was about two hours ago.
The only pain medication I have in my house is Paracetamol and it says 'do not mix with alcohol'.
Would that mean don't take if drunk or is it also dangerously irresponsible to take one if you had ~0,03l of ethanol two hours ago ? It's definitely bad for my liver, but my assumption is that the liver can take a lot of crap if said crap only happens every couple of years.

Alcohol enhances the effect of painkillers. I know Germans have notoriously iron stomachs so for your average sausage muncher i recommend 20 painkillers and a bottle of vodka :mischief:

Regularly taking paracetamol for hangovers is very bad for the liver. On a once off where a twisted ankle still smarts after dinner it's fine.

Sounds like it's more likely that you'll have to go to the doc due to a screwed up ankle than to a paracetamol intoxication.

Alcohol enhances the effect of painkillers.

Not necessarily, that totally depends on the med.
Could enhance it, even to the point where it directly knocks you out, could render it useless, or even have an antagonistic effect.
The best advice is "just don't do it".

Good enough.

Although painkillers for a twisted ankle? Man up!

When it happened it hurt for a bit, but then I was able to walk home just fine. It's only after an hour of sitting that the pain really kicked in. I had barelyenough self respect to not crawl to the medicine cabinet.

I'm only culturally German. Genetically I'm a Slav, and yes, I have quite a high tolerance for alcohol. I'm just disinclined to push my luck.

That's what I assumed. I just wanted other people to say it. :goodjob:

Does anybody know much about Fenway Sports Group and their success/failure in american sporting franchises like the boston red sox?

You're asking the exact same question most Red Sox fans asked about Liverpool FC two years ago. :p

Well FSG have just come into the football news once again over here and i'm curious to see how successfull their american sports businesses are going; so I can get a better estimation on how well LP FC will do in the future ;)

Yar. It's one of those things that's probably fine. But I would actively avoid mixing them in the future if at all possible. Just too many random combinations that can do either nothing at all or a hell of a lot relatively quickly.

They comprehensively torpedoed the 2012 Red Sox season by alienating and/or scapegoating previous star players and front office personnel (including a GM that had brought them two titles in the last eight years, including the first franchise title since 1918), then started a major rebuilding effort in the last several weeks.

They're not very popular in Boston right now.
