I would say people hate Chelsea because they were one of the first clubs to be bankrolled by a billionaire which meant they could spend lots of money on the best players and pay them high wages. This led to allergations that Chelsea had "bought" the league/FA cup/ League cup and so on.
Plus, a lot of people hate John Terry because all of his controversy he is involved in over his career (especially the left) and he is booed when he gets the ball at certain stadiums - hes the captain ;). You also have players like Ashley Cole who is unashamedly materialistic and moved to Chelsea for the big pounds over notions like club loyalty.

I would say the Chelsea hate has died down a lot these days. The rage against the big money is now directed at Manchester City who got bought out by an Arab oil tycoon in 2008..

I thought Manchester United was one of the richest teams?

Reagarding soccer, not long ago I decided to arbitrarily choose a Premier League team as 'my team.' I chose Arsenal. As a new fan, though, I'm still struggling to learn about my adopted team. While I am soaking up all I can from arsenal.com and seriously considering subscribing to player.arsenal.com, I would still appreciate any helpful information from anyone who has Arsenal in their blood as it were. You know, what teams should I truly despise, that sort of thing.

Thanks!

Arsenal HATES Spurs. Thats the biggest rivalry they have. It's called the "north-london derby" and happens twice a season as they are in the same league.
In recent times (past 15 years) Arsenal has copped off a rivalry with Manchester United as they were rivals for the Premier League title - but it's dropped down a little bit because Arsenal haven't won the league since 03/04.
..and your nickname for an arsenal fan or player is a "Gunner" which everybody else calls a "gooner" (goon = idiot, not sure if thats a word in american english ;) )

You chose a good team to support, they are an exciting team to watch.

I don't know how this disproves anything i've said (if that was your intention).
But you are right. Yet Manchester United has earned its cash in what fans consider a legitimate way through being successfull on the pitch and running a good business off the pitch (sponsership deals, selling shirts, building fan bases in the far east that kind of thing). When a very rich owner buys the club they can pump in hundreds of millions and thats percieved to be bad - your "buying" trophies.

I am an American Manchester United supporter, and I asked because I always thought they were a rich club. You mentioned Manchester City and Chelsea being rich, but I was just making sure that Man. UTD was rich too.

Glory Glory Man United! ;)

What's the point in supporting a team if it you can't use it as a vehicle for pointless and self-destructive ethnoreligious conflict? Seems a bit petty, if you ask me.

Most people don't care about the Old Firm.

Shows how daft they are. What's the point of football if you don't get a chance to stick one to the Orange bastards/filthy bog trotters, delete as necessary? Just a bunch of overpaid Italians shepherding a ball around a lawn. Better off with a real sport, one with overpaid Australians violently hurling a ball around a lawn.

There aren't a whole lot of eyeties that play football. Most of the players tend to be American.

I don't think "play" is the right word for American football. Between the size of the players and the way in which they slam into each other, it's clearly a roundabout way of trying to teach people about plate tectonics.

Lazily, and with apparently limited awareness of their surroundings?

Do you think I am Australian?

Honestly I have no idea what you are talking about (even though it was clearly a joke).

Ninja'ed both times, dammit.

That said, I'm willing to let my rule slide for things like Newcastle and Sunderland, whose rivalry goes back to the Civil War, or Millwall and West Ham, who's rivalry goes back to the General Strike. Mostly what I want is a good, idiotic historical grounding, ethnoreligious conflicts are really just the easiest way to get there.
