I was curious because last night at a Christmas dinner, my wife's coworkers were talking about one of their students.
His parents are Chinese and all of the Chinese children they have had in the classes at HeadStart had chinese first names. However, this little boy is named Jimmy and everyone thinks it odd that they'd name him that. Over the course of the conversation, someone said Jimmy has a little sister and that got me wondering if they named him Jimmy because they aren't going back.
Which in turn made me wonder if they could go back if they wanted to.
It is somewhat usual for Chinese Chinese people (as opposed to American born Chinese) to have an 'English name' that they use for business purposes. Usually this is a name that is somewhat close in pronunciation to their actual name. Maybe that's the case here too? (Or, alternatively, they'll find a Chinese name sounding like Jimmy if/when they get back)
