All of this was field back in days
I've thinking and

Why don't we, all the community, stop and finish all the things that each one is doing and we organize ourselves to collect all the work and coolness each mod has such as maps, civs, techs, etcetcetcetc..... we can and make the
official fanmade third expansion for civilization 4?

I am dead serious

I'm sure the legal ramifications alone would be mind blowing. 2K losing out on a potential profit? Yah, pull the other one.
Would be a nice xmas present though :)

There's already quite a few mods out there that basically serve as fan-made expansion packs, incorporating tons of other modpacks developed over the years.

Irrelevant

Cavemen 2 Cosmos has got to come as close as anything. Unfortunately this is word of mouth and early impressions, even with low graphics it's too much for my computer - way too much lag at 50,000 BC.

On the other hand, I would love to see a collection of some of the best user-created maps or even alternative civilizations but who would decide?

Does Caveman to Cosmos including BUG, BAT, tons of single scenarios, etc.?

If it doesn't, admins could organize this in the homepage. 'Civfanatics Civilization 4 version'

And I'm not talking about make it buy it. Just another mod like every other. Except that this one is the biggest and coolest mod of the game because the artwork, code, techs, units, civs, etc. of all the community are there, inside.

People disagree on what should (or shouldn't) be included.
And obviously you can't have everything, or you'd have Auric Ascended fighting battleships.

For me, K-Mod is the closest thing to a third expansion.

I agree with this. An 'expansion pack' would have to be a form of Civ4, which C2C isn't. However, the pack would have to also include as many as possible of the best and most ambitious mods, and Fall From Heaven and C2C would be at or near the front of that queue.

BtS does ship with a number of mods after all. It's just that they seem to be some of the less popular ones (apart from RFC).

so.... who would be in charge of what was to be added into that "3rd"?
and if everything was added, it would be unplayable.

This. To be honest I am no fan of the "add as much as possible of everything" mods - and I am pretty sure this is not the way a new "official" expansion should or would go. An official expansion should include a handfull of new high quality civilizations / leaders / techs / units / whatever, add, refine or fine tune some of the game mechanics and introduce some new and interesting scenarios and mods. All this is allready available here in the download section. There's high quality polished and finished stuff like FFH2, BUG / BAT, Rhye's, Revolution DCM, Blue Marble (and many other interesting projects) around, all of them not just adding fetaures, but with a clear scope and focus, all of them professionally done, all of them could and would deserve to be sold as an "official" expansion. So all we are really missing is the "selecting entity" - and I'd say anyone of us should be able to do that selection for him- or herself based on own requirements and taste. At least I don't need anyone else to tell me which mods I should "officially" play...

Someone might consider combining and editing the best features of the most prominent mods...
I would choose...
K-mod, basically in its entirety
C2C prehistory, future, and culture (built based on surroundings, optionally connected by region)
LOR and others' rise and fall of civilizations mechanics ( realistic rise and fall of civilizations... rising barbs and birth of new civs, empires accruing problems over time, even more than revolt instability)
Any other major stuff that might be included? perhaps this should be in the mod section...

This. K-mod is amazing, C2C adds alot of prehistoric and future units and buildings, and it's great culture system. LOR and RFC's new civs is also great, add RevDCM to that and it'd be (nearly) perfect in my opinion.

Even though I gave a nod to Cavemen 2 Cosmos, it really is very different from BtS although for the concept the mod of mods it fits with all of the prehistory concepts, BBAI and much more.

Great to see k-mod getting love here. I use it and will definitely recommend it.

I'm sticking with K-mod because it allows me to actually play on large maps a full game. Without k-mod lag gets me around Renaissance time.

Of course karadoc's at liberty to do as they please; but a separate source tree with just the efficiency improvements would be a valuable thing to have - and (if completely debugged) an unarguably useful base for a community mod.

I'm not convinced by these kitchen-sink mods. It seems to me that if you play to win you'll simply be even less likely to see the late tech tree - even without Z^3-style explicit pursuit of such a goal, sooner or later, you'll have the military advantage, and crush everyone. The longer the tech tree gets, the less chance of getting to the end without that happening.

On behalf of the BUG Team, thank you for the generous compliment. :)

I think this is a good idea... It could be led simply by a council of senior/leading modders, or a leader they choose. They would have say over the entire mod. I think Mr. karadoc and the rangers guy who made C2C would be a nice antithesis, if they'd agree to it. Sulla might be brought in. Lemon, you were major in the making of BUG? It'd be good if you joined too, then. Just anyone who wants to. Think of how great a definitive mod by all the prominent modders would be.

I seriously could get 10% of the community to agree on the overall direction of such a mod. Plus, who's pet units and leaders would be superior etc.

Though I'm pretty sure my SDF-1 supercarrier would beat your Alexander summon. It can take on Invid after all.

I'm a member of the BUG team, but I strictly do the BAT Mod and a little dusting now and then. EmperorFool and ruff_hi deserve all the credit for BUG.
