The Mole: S&T's First Game Show!

Well, I discussed the same topic in our competitive Succession Game of the Month game, where my team placed second out of eleven teams. While I was the newb on the team, no one called me out as spewing b.s. on the subject. The problem is that the thread is massive (almost 2500 messages), but I suppose that some clever thread-based searches could bring up some info on the subject. I'm off to bed, now, though, so I'll just leave you with a link to the thread, if you have the inclination to check it out for yourself.

EDIT: Another, probably more palatable thought than searching through 2500 messages, is to look for a thread that talks about tech research. I seem to recall one being called "technology research explained" or something along those lines. The gist is that you can get up to a theoretical cost savings on a tech of up to 30% for each other player in the game that knows the tech. The AIs get the same bonus.

This fact is combined with the fact that AI research is based on them throwing together several values, including:
- A weighting of a tech based on their tech flavours (i.e. Military and Culture or Science and Gold... each AI has either a "major" and a "minor" flavour or else just one "major" flavour)
- The currest cost of the tech (which is where the above point about other players knowing the tech comes into play)
- Other factors, such as a Worker tech for relevant Resources
- Unique Units or Unique Buildings being unlocked by a particular tech
- A random number value
- Possibly other factors

An AI can research up to three techs "deep" in the tech tree, but they can't, for example, just click on Future Tech 1... as far as they "know," if a tech would take more than 4 steps in the tech tree, they "do not know about it" and thus do not consider it in their above calculation... kind of like a chess AI that only looks as many as 3 moves ahead.

EDIT to the EDIT: It should be easy enough for you to confirm that a player can get a bonus to research on a tech if other players know it. Simply start a high-level game (say, Immortal) where the AIs begin with techs like Hunting and Archery. Spend 1 turn researching 1 of those techs. Next, open the World Builder and put a Lion of yours next to each AI, so that you meet every AI (then delete the Lions so that you can stay at a 100% Science Rate). Perform research for 1 turn on the same tech and notice that you should get more Flasks... maybe 1 or 2 more, depending upon how many AIs are in your game... simply because you have met other players that know the same tech already.

Olaf! When will you play your turnset?

Yup. This evening, so expect to see the save in about 4-5 hours.

Getting the save now.

OK, so first thing that happened this turnset: We met Kublai.

The next major event was that the Settler was finished in the capital.
Then I built this city.

Right from under Pericles' nose!

Went for Writing after Pottery, followed by Sailing for future traderoutes.

Then I realised I'd run 3 turns over my turnset

Save attached.

PS: I thought we were playing Next War? How come this is a vanilla save?

Well, since we started with a World Buildered saved game, the Mod didn't get loaded automatically... and then we just went with it, getting ilduce's computer ready for playing the unModded game, rather than restarting.

Actually, now that I look at your screenshots and mine, I see that although I deleted the CustomAssets folder, I still appear to have been using at least part of the BUG Mod. Hopefully, that fact won't mess up the game (it hasn't in previous succession games that I have played).

Ok, now that the end of the round is approaching, I think we need to discuss who we think is the mole, and why.

:agree:

Any ideas, anyone?

Because I don't want to make myself suspicious and I can't really do any damage at this time I'll skip this round.

that means that....wait 1 sec

EDIT: o right, SK is up

Why did we settle in the horse? Would it not be better to work it?

Why did we settle in the horse? Would it not be better to work it?
This map has a ton of Plains and Desert squares. It seemed like a location with 2 Fish might be our only feasbile Great Person Farm. Sure, the capital has some Food, but it's our capital, so it's better off working a balanced amount of squares--Food, Mines, and then either Cottages or Specialists.

Yes, settling on top of the Horse means that we get zero additional Hammers or Commerce out of it (since it is a Grassland Horse--setting on top of a Plains Horse would have at least given us +1 Hammer), but settling there does mean that we won't create an unworkable Fail Fish. We can also instantly produce a Chariot by spending 1 turn of building a Chariot to get some Hammers invested into it, then immediately whipping it the next turn, as the perfect anti-Barbarian unit, should Barb Warriors show up unexpectedly.

Of course, maybe I just wanted to mess up our production capabilities by wasting our best production-based square discovered to date.

[*]When voting, the mole does not vote for himself
So, does this fact mean that I skip the process of sending you a private message? If no one else knows who I am going to vote for, then does it even matter if I pick anyone?

Are we allowed to vote now, or do we have to wait till the end of the round?

Oh, you can begin now, I guess. You can always change your vote anyway

Still waiting for you to get back home, SK

I vote that the Mole is Hoplitejoe.
