First of all, I would like to thank everyone for continuing to build up our army. Attacking with overwhelming forces against an AI can help to make a war go REALLY smoothly. Thanks!
I was planning to wait to start the war until our forces got a little bit closer to Kublai but I saw an Archer + an Axeman + a Settler within reach of our Chariots on the first turn of play, so I just went ahead and declared war, rather than having to face yet another City to take down.
So, we got a free Fast Worker which then got used to try to lure Genghis to attack it (i.e. leave his City less guarded) but he did not take the bait, so it just built a couple of Roads to help with our advance.
Of course, on the next turn, Genghis bribed in a war ally (Hannibal). I'm not even sure where Hannibal is on the map, so I'm not very concerned about that fact.
Our Chariots took down the first City since it was so lightly defended, then our stack of Axemen + Spearmen went for a Coastal City. We lost a few Chariots taking down the first City but got a lucky break with our first Axeman beating down the Archer defending the second City. Our Axemen then (relatively--one still died) cut through the remaining Swordsmen defenders quite easily.
Oh yeah, after we got some Happiness from the whipped Buddhist Temple, as well as some extra Happiness from a couple of Resource trades (Gold and Wine), it seemed like a good idea to dump our Hammers into a Wonder. We really could use a boost to our economy and The Great Lighthouse, on a map where there are a lot of AIs within trading distance, can be a great investment.
Our forces pressed on, taking down Kublai's capital. We now possess The Pyramids and Stonehenge. Woot!
Combined arms for the win: A Spearman attacked a defending Archer + Spearman combo. The Archer became the top defender and was weakened enough that when the Axeman attacked, the SPEARMAN became the top defender and died. Due to this sequence of events, our Chariots, which would have been silly to use against a defending Spearman, became extremely useful, since:
a) One of the Chariots killed the wounded defending Archer with ease
b) The other 2 Chariots ran into Kublai's lands and started capturing Workers--a stack of 3 Workers were captured immediately (and later even a Great General was killed before it joined any enemy units!)
c) The Spearman on the Road to the SE + E of New Sarai, after New Sarai was captured, received the Combat I promotion and was used to kill Kublai's Archer that was on the Wheat, thanks to the Roads belonging to "neutral territory" after New Sarai was captured.
Kublai went after our unprepared neighbour Napolean. Well, that was our fault, since we bribed Napoleon into the war in the first place. However, the game didn't give me the option to "Liberate" the captured City of Avignon back to the French so I just razed it, with the hopes of rebuilding it 1E of where it was placed in order to get the Iron within the resettled City's fat cross.
If the City had been halfway decent, I probably would have just kept it, but these Plains-filled Cities are pretty junky, so I didn't even think that it would be worth keeping without getting 3 Resources within our fat cross.
We are poised to PROBABLY be able to capture one more of Kublai's Cities next turn. That bugger seems to have REXed during the war, though, as his City count went down then went back up by at least 2, maybe 3, Cities.
So, I do not think that we will be winning via "Conquesting an AI" anytime soon.
