The New7Wonders organization today announced the New Seven Wonders of the World to represent global heritage throughout history, based on the results of a global poll in which about 100 million votes were casted over the Internet and by cell phone text messages.

The modern-day seven Wonders of the World are (in alphabetical order):
These seven beat out 14 other nominated landmarks:
The Great Pyramids of Giza, the only surviving structures from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, retained their status in addition to the new seven.

All the landmarks above are linked to their Wikipedia entry, so you can learn more about them if you want.

I think the "new" seven wonders of the world and the seven wonders of the ancient world need to remain distinct categories. All seven orginal should still be remembered. Hopefully people will look at this as a supplemental list, not as a replacement list.

Thunderfall, please correct the Colosseum's spelling.

I would have posted before but I didn't want the first reply to have a negative finding. :)

How did the Pyramids not get chosed? Yeah, I see they "retained" there status. But, seriously, they are the most impressive structures of human civilization.

Hell it's the first thing I build in every Civ4 game (assuming I have access to stone ;) ).

honestly, I think brazil's statue doesn't belong.

IMO:
the 3 automatics:
Great Wall
Taj Mahal
Colosseum

3 perfectly good:
Machu Pichu
Petra
Chichen Itza

The not so good:
Christ Redeemer

It should be replaced with Angkor Wat, the Hagia Sophia, or Stonehenge. (or maybe even Acropolis)

I mean, it's a great building, but I just don't think it deserves to be a new wonder.

im unimpressed by these wonders i think people just voted for their 'hometown' wonder

i mean the statue of liberty is more impressive that the Christ thing

they forgot the bob's big boy statue in toluca lake, california

I'm pretty disappointed with this list, myself. Taj, Great Wall, and Chichen Itza are good choices, at least.

The site itself admitted in a press release that most of the votes until recently came from South America. Does that tell you anything?

I went to Machu Picchu a few weeks ago, and when we entered or left the main entrance they just about forced us to sit down at these voting booths where we voted for it on the 7 Wonders of the World website.

All the pamphlets and booklets they handed out had the link to the website on them, and there was a big billboard at the entrance of the town nearby (Aguas Calientes) telling us to vote.

I wonder if anyone else wanted it that badly

way way way slanted towards the south american wonders, which while impressive.... don't quite beat out stuff like the Hagia Sophia, Angkor Wat or Timbuktu.... very lame list in my opinion, not even really worth consulting given it's obvious bias (don't get me wrong at least one of the south american wonders should be on there not so much with the others tho...they just aren't AS good, not that they're not incredible)

Personally I think these suck and are meaningless.

I'll take the original and the best, thanks.

Don't agree.

Maybe for you americans Statue of Liberty is more impressive than the Christ Redeemer, but only for you, not for the people of Brasil that voted and put it's statue on there.

Most of votes came from South America because of a campaign supported by all brazillians who want to see our statue on there. We are trying to change the eyes of people that refer to Christ of Redeemer as a "thing".

If Christ Redeemer was elected, it is because the Christ is a true wonder and it have a big population supporting it. Wonders are not only made by impressive and giant made buildings.

Overall, that is a question of opinion and I respect what you think, but don't refer to that statue as just a "thing".

Yeah. I mean Machu Picchu and Christo Redentor totally baffles me. It's like "Dude, they have like this city in mountains, unbelievable, and there is also this like big statue too. Whoa."

Why not vote for Detroit since we are at it? It's in mountains too.

Reminds me of my own brethren's "Poland should be in civ, because we were more important than Spain, Portugal and England combined."

Next thing, you will be arguing in Eurovision only the best song wins.

In regards to the Pyramids, they were taken out of the voting because Egypt complained that they shouldn't have to "compete" for the title at all. It is really rediculous because I am sure that they would have placed anyway. Now, I just wasted a vote on them that could have gone to another deserving candidate.

Another thing that bothers me is the fact that The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) did not endorse the "contest" as they felt that the decision should be left to scientists. It is just another rediculous display by the UN. Why should it be up to some lab coat wearing, know-it-all, morons over the populace... who this is really about anyway. Personally, I don't care what motivations were behind this Swedish guys agenda. The point of this really came down to bringing the world together in a multicultural project. Instead, it seems that we can't seem to get our heads out of our own butts long enough to unite over a simple friendly contest. It is just sad.

I am also dissappointed in my own countrymen and my ancestral countrymen who seemed all but ignored this story from the get go. According to reports, Europe and America provided the least votes as of the last polling in early June. For one, it shows that our citizens are so ignorant, as if the Tonight Show's Jay Walking bit didn't already show how bad we can be. What's worse, is that I barely saw any coverage by the media (I had do dig for it in the various news sites, and if I never would have caught the story here, I never would have known about the whole thing). The media was too busy previewing the next hit movies with critics, and !The Princess goes to Jail and The Prince who couldn't go to war, among other pointless stories that shouldn't have gotten as much coverage as they did (especially the first one). Now, I am not terribly upset that the Statue of Liberty did not get selected, even despite the fact that it is one that I voted for. If more Americans voted than maybe it would have placed better. It is strictly about the principle. In the end, it just goes to show what a sad state this world is in.

Anyway, as for the results, I am satisfied that at least two of the wonders that I voted for made it on the list, the Great Wall and the Colloseum, of which I felt definitely deserved to be on the list. As for the others I am pretty much indifferent on the results. Kudos to South and Central America for getting it's people to vote so much. At least some people can prove me wrong and show that they still have pride and spirit in their culture. These three are the ones I would say I am most indifferent on, though I admit that I didn't vote for any of them. Chichen Itza and Macchu Piccu are well deserving of the titles they have earned. Congrats to Brazil with Christ the Redeemer making the grade. I was pleasently surprised with Petra, though I don't believe that I voted for it. It was one that I considered when I was narrowing the list down. Sorry, but I was least impressed about Taj Mahal. I felt that there were others I would have liked to see make the grade. Congrats anyway.

So, on the lighter side, what do you think this may mean for future incarnations of Civ. I do hope that the Colloseum will finally make it as a Civ World Wonder (arena could replace it as a regular building*).

* Do I smell.... MOD CHALLENGE

Cristo Redentor is a total joke - it's essentially a big statue built in modern times - it required no groundbreaking feat of architecture or engineering, there are thousands of statues like this around the world. It's not even pretty. The only good thing about it is that it is built in a picturesque spot - but then again, so are most holiday resorts and noone is voting them "Wonders of the World" either.

As usual in such contest, nationalist idiots made it a farce. Enjoy your victory - noone else cares.

This is your true vision of it? (I'am not relating to the religious side of the phrase, IF there is something religious!)

You are being contradictory.
