The Non-Midas Touch, Deity Variant, 1.21PTW

Ack... I hate having to do this, but I am going to have to ask for a skip between now and July 14th.
Blame my family. It was their idea to go on vacation. For me, vacation would have been coding with a laptop in the middle of my back yard.
Again, I'm REALLY sorry I have to do this, but I need a skip between now and then.
Dont worry, I will come back.
SaaM

PS- Please dont drop me

Now worries man,

You have just played and it may make it back to you before the 14th ;)

Also I am sure you wont be dropped, we aint as hard a$$ed as some SG teams ;)

Real nice turns again from Meli !
And that's me wanting to :whipped: him ;)

ps : got it of course...

Guys I'm a bit rushed but I should have the turns finished by tomorrow night....
Sorry :(

My apologies I only got time for a very short summary...

We need acqueducts, I veto the galley in Athens, duct due in 10.

I concentrate on building infra, mainly Libraries and Acqueducts as we need to maximize the food boost
it will give us.

Massive number of Babs going through our territory :scared:

Make numerous gifts to them, still annoyed.

They (babs) demand Territory map, we cave in.

The Chinese and French are starting Copernicus Observatory in 280AD.

Have no idea what the Babs are doing :confused: ? they seemed to go towards England but they are now at the border just waiting....

Now get this : a Bab Cavalry comes into our territory and stops right by Corinth :eek: :eek:

Ok the Babs attack England, huge sods fighting it out over there...

Everybody building Bach's

I give money to England because the Babs are too powerful and their attitude does not change anyway.

I go 2 more turns to round the numbers.

Huge massacres of swords and spears and bows going around Norwich

Republic is discovered and we enter anarchy on the interturn, we draw 3.5 turns which is good.

However, we lose 9gpt in Anarchy, even though I hired all the possible taxmen and use all possible sea tiles,
we are going to lose infra but there is no other way :)

Well to help matters even more China demands 6g our whole treasury so we for sure lose one infra building per turn...
France requires TM : whippin' boy anyone ?

For f*** knows what reason we do not lose a building on the interturn even though we have 0 gpt and losing now 7gpt,

Or did the message just not appear ?

For f*** knows what reason we do not lose a building on the interturn even though we have 0 gpt and losing now 7gpt,

Skyfish, you may want to read T-hawks last turn in LK50. They had a similar situation and it appear you do not lose buildings while in anarchy even when running - gpt. A bug maybe, an exploit maybe. Never heard it happening before but now 2 different SG's with the same thing going on :rolleyes:. Oh the things we continue to learn even after 18 months playing the same game :lol:.

Hotrod

The only thing that affects gpt during anarchy is gpt payments to/from AI civs. Buildings/units have no maintenance and no cash is gained by commerce tiles.

SO, what happens when you have negative gpt during anarchy is that the civ(s) you're supposed to be paying gpt to get shafted out of some of their payment. I have no idea if this affects your reputation, their attitude, or anything like that, though. But somebody somewhere is losing 7 gpt that you're supposed to be paying them.

Where's Bamspeedy when you need him? ;)
Arathorn

Sheesh, we do indeed have payments outgoing :eek: !
:aargh:

I must admit I have never been in a situation where I was running a deficit at 0 gold whilst in anarchy...but if T-Hawk did not know either that's good enough for me ;)

Will study the saves in order to see how far it affects our reputation and will keep everyone posted.

got it.

Damaging our rep would hurt us way more than losing buildings, so I'll see what I can do...maybe even let some cities starve by going all out taxmen?

Babylonian cavalry is indeed a little frightening...we're almost a whole age behind in tech, and trying to slice some bab lands is looking kinda out of the question....so maybe we should look out for the opportunity to take a bite at England? Or maybe we shall have to scrape by on what meager lands we have?

This is a pretty insane tech pace, though, even for deity...approaching the industrial ages circa 300AD. :eek:

Because I'm in both games, and because I started the anarchy phase in LK50... Then I gave the save to T-Hawk, who described this bug... I'm not sure of this, but there must be an exploit if no building are sold... I think I'll continue where I ended in LK50 someday just to see what happens with this situation.

About this game, I'm afraid we are losing a difficult victory. We MUST regain power... by all means ! (except giving up our special rule)

EDIT : How/where do you notice the number of turns in anarchy ?

Krys,
Once you started the Revolution in the F1 screen, press the more button of your Domestic advisor and she will tell you at one point in how many turns the situation will be back in control.

Do you know how to start this process during the interturn ?

Non-Midas Touch, Inherited Turn, 350AD

2 turns left on anarchy
well, I don't see what the fuss is about, since by hiring a few more taxmen in cities that have food boxes filled and changing some entertainers to taxmen, we can break even on gold. I also earn 3g from map sales.

BTW Skyfish, hgh commerce tiles do nothing in anarchy: it is best to work high food tiles.

Delphi changed to FP: it's already 350AD and we must start it now.

Since we no longer have MPs, I move some troops to front lines.

IT: French want to renegotiate furs for spices +3gpt deal: I can get feudalism + 4g straight up, or spices + TM +4g. I take feudalism; our cities will go into disorder, but hey, we're in anarchy anyway! Also back to -3gpt, with 7g in the treasury.

lots of fighting between England and Babylon: good to see they're still going strong and neither side is gaining much!
Athens riots; I do not scroll ahead, let all cities all riot, it saves on food. We're down to 4g.

Turn 1, 360AD - change taxmen back to entertainers to end disorder; -8gpt, but map sales bring us to 11g in treasury :) - 1g to babylon

Check this for a trading opportunity: England does not have chivalry yet! We may not be so far behind as we think.

IT: lots more fighting. Order restored in previously rioting cities; Delphi enters disorder (missed that one)....we are a Republic!!!
Russia building Bachs.

Turn 2, 370AD - lots of tile changing + reoptimizing - lack of luxes is hurting; so Ivory + 6g from Egypt for WM + 8gpt; Cleoptra becomes polite. Joanie is already gracious :love: buy spices for 6g + 9gpt. we still need 10% luxes, and are doing -1gpt.

Gandhi lacks horses but won't offer anything decent for our only source so that's out; he may change his mind if he gets military tradition though, so we should be aware of this opportunity.

IT: Babs seem to have a lot of cavalry.

Athens: aqueduct -------> galley
order restored in Delphi

Turn 3, 380AD - not much. Sold maps we've got 4g, doing -1gpt. I'm not setting a scientist on anything because there's nothing that can wait for 40 turns at the moment.

IT: a lot of Bab troops head back into their own lands....mayhaps they are at war with someone else too?

Turn 4, 390AD - we're up to +2gpt as Athens is now size 7. England now has chivalry, so that opportunity no longer remains.

IT: all the bab troops are leaving our lands - I'm betting they are at war with someone else too :D

Corinth: library -------> walls
Buto: temple -------> harbour
French building Magellan's

Turn 5, 400AD - nowt. gift England 5g

IT: hehe...Babylon is at war with Russia, as I see a city change from red to brown to red on the corner of the map that we have. Ashur is owned by the Russians!
Athens: galley --------> galley

Turn 6, 410AD - gift 3g to China, for a bit of variation

IT: Sparta: aqueduct ------> courthouse
France and India building Bachs

Turn 7, 420AD - zzz

IT: Russia demands TM + 9g - paid

Turn 8, 430AD - our exploring galley reveals that some of the islands to our north have seen some fighting - there may even be room for some more cities so I wake the settlers in Corinth and send them to Athens.

IT: Athens: galley ------> galley
Paris completes Copernicus;

Turn 9, 440AD - the deal with the Indians has expired and we now have 21gpt to play with. Unfortunately 21gpt is not enough to buy any techs :( But, if we throw horses in as well, we can get a tech from India...tough choice...I decide against it for the moment, may change mind later...we don't know where India is so I'm not sure how secure the trade route is, and I also don;t think we're getting full value for our only horses if I were to make that deal.
Egypt and China are both in anarchy, so it looks like democracy may have been discovered. Gift 4g to England

IT: English troops turn back - don't tell me they've made peace :(

Turn 10, 450AD - settlers onto galley - there is at least one potential city site next to Athribis, and a potential aggressive settlement next to Leeds.

We can no longer trade horses to India...damn! Maybe I should have made the deal last turn?

Hmm...this is tricky...we have 31g, + 22gpt...even that is only close to getting chivalry from France, who is commercial and gracious, and we don't even want chivalry, cos it's an optional tech...we could buy wines from Babylon, and snix lux tax? I'm not entirely sure what we should do, and leave the decison to the next player...do NOT give away 21g! Instead, upgrade a sword to MDI if we don't make a trade.

Also, let's get these galleys going so we can actually explore the map. The galley north of Athens has 2 settlers onboard so we can found some island cities.

Krys is up, Aggie on deck

OK, got it. Don't have time to read or to play now. So expect my turns in more than 24 hours.

Thanks Skyfish ! And I don't undertsand your point in your question...

(late) EDIT : BTW, what's the difference between a rioting city and a non-rioting city in anarchy ? What do we care ? I'm confused here.
I'm gonna play now. Report and save in the next couple of hours.

Establish an embassy with the Egyptians (45 gold) : Thebes' culture is 2198 (+33).
GOLD : 2 (+37)

I'm afraid we're quite doomed. We had a very bad start, we couldn't go warmongering because we were too weak, so this didn't slow down the tech pace. Our only chance of victory with this variant rule was too fight a lot... I'm not saying we have lost, but it will be very difficult to win now.
We have lots of warriors that cost money and can't be upgraded now because that costs 60 gold. Maybe we should disband them... or pack them in that city where mace are. We may want to fight the English now... Don't know, really.

the save : 550ad

Dont give up guys...

I have recently pulled myself out of a worse hole in GOTM20

Never ever give up

We WILL win this game, even if it must be a spacecraft win.

If we can start gifting civs gpt then we should, keep the strong happy and join in at the end to crush our allies enemies.

We can concentrate on infrastructure and productivity.

Trade agressively, Take advantage of our allies gains.

We can trade and creep our way into some nice lands.

Build up and overcome.

Onward <insert religion here> soldiers!
Marching as to war...

We are the Greeks, if we can get big enough we get our commercial value in ...

Come on.

Melifluous

Well said Meli!

This is FAR from lost. Our aim at the start was a spaceship launch - even the tech leaders are only half-way to that point! And we've still got the industrial age world wars to come. IMO, the Civ 3 AI could be improved tenfold by one simple alteration: removing MPPs from the game. The AI is a sucker when it comes to MPP - just watch and grimace - as soon as Nationalism gets round, everyone (except us, of course) will sign MPPs; someone will start a war, and beofre you know it, everyone will be at war. That gives us a chance to catch up. Just look at the year! It's 550AD - most space games, even on deity, tend to go to at least 1600AD - we've still got plenty of time; our focus should be simply to improve our economy - lets get markets and harbours built, lets improve all our lands. I would recommend NOT giving away gpt: if an AI has decided to sneak attack you, making a deal or giving them a gift isn't going to change that. We need our income as high as possible. Krys, in that last turn you gave away 20g to India and 29g to China. Why?!? I specifically noted in my end of turn notes that if we had lump sums like that, we should upgrade some swords to MDI. Has that happened? How many swords do we have, or have they all been upgraded?

If it's only for one turn then yes; not long-term though
