The Nostalgia Thread

I think it's bubble bobble.

PSIII on the left gba. Colours very washed out relative to Megadrive/PSP.

That's the first time I heard there is a console name bubble bobble, lol, nope nope Golden Sun is on GBA, I played Gundam 2D fighting game also on GBA, as well as the legendary Fire Emblem, another great title!

Don't think I own that one. I can't find my Shining Force cartridge. GBA has two shoulder buttons.

Anyway I think we own most of the fire emblem games. My wife didn't believe me when I told her Shining force was a prototype Fire Emblem.

Shining Force is the proto-type of Japanese turn base rpg, thanks to SF now we got FF tactics, fire emblems, Vandal Heart, Valkyrie Chronicle and all of those other goodies.

Nice FE collection. Lyn is easily one of my favorite video game character:

A badass nomad girl lmao, never like using glass cannon, but she's really a killer, fit also with how they picture her personality through the game.

Do you play PS1 games?

No I don't have that many PS1 disks now and my original ps is kaput. Bought another one a few years back and tested my PS1 disks on PS3 but that got stolen.

PS1 games have aged terribly both in controls and graphics. Early 3D graphics bleah 16bit 2D not to bad.

I didn't enjoy ps1 and 2 that much. PS1 more than 2.

True, 3D game getting old and aged much faster than 2D. But there are lots of replayable gems on PS1. Valkyrie Profile for instance, this game is not just a mere game, it's an art, great story-telling, the game is simply too beautiful.

Castlevania Symphony of The Night, there is no Metroidvania genre that able to top that, even Bloodstained is miles and miles far behind, the story telling is simple but the stoic Alucard is able to top the current castlevania series.

Brigandine, FF tactics, Xenogears, Thousand Arms, and tons of other titles. PS1 is arguably the best console we ever made. Full of exclusive titles, and lots of groundbreaking game, packed with gems and hidden gems that peoples still looking, searching and discussing till this very day.

I didn't play most of the classics back in the day.

Money was tight so owned few games, I preferred 16 bit and rts type games at the time.

Never really got into 3D adventure games until later. Gran Turismo was ok.

Gran Turismo was ok.

For that time, Grand Turismo was offering something that I never seen. Strolling around car dealers looking for that GTR twin turbo? Taking license, winning race competition, upgrading your cars, dude and it's 90s game!

I liked it but I've never really liked racing games much.

From memory I like Crash Bandicoot, Loaded, Soviet and Nuclear Strike, Panzer General, C&C, Colony Wars, Gran Turismo 1&2, Suidoken.

I was also busy discovering females and screwing that up.

Suidoken.

Great games, I played 1&2.

This is also a nostalgic issue, the topic about dating.

My dating time was mostly every Saturday night, and most of the lobbying were done using house-phone, I don't date girls around my school, because I mostly spend my time cleaning toilets and watering plant due to disciplinary issues, I wasn't that cool guy at school, I'm more like a rule breaker type of student, and who say girl love bad boys? They don't, they went "ewwww" with them  but I do enjoy the dynamic.

Due to that I got mostly girls from other school from friends, and even from my own big sister, and thanks to that the phone bill went up and my parents ending up locking the phone.

Here is where it gets interesting, I able to outsmart the lock using toothpick, so I insert the toothpick between the small and narrow space and start to dial the phone with it. When my parents found it, they changed it with a better lock and the toothpick unable to enter. But I found out that I can still dial the phone by using that small button where you press whenever you want to turn off the phone. Tap 1 for the number 1, tap 2 times for two, these all true till number 9, for number 0 you have to tap 10 times.

So there were no way for them to restrict me calling my crush. :smoke:

I just rang them up. Getting a girlfriend was easy.

Keeping one was the hard part.

I don't know it's not that easy for me, it's a hit and miss, when it hit it feels amazing, when it miss, it feels horrible and haunting. Perhaps unlike you who taking this light and easy, I always take this matter death serious.

Just young and stupid at the time.

A lot if the guys treated girls like crap. I could at least talk to them.
But I was stupid and clueless to keep them happy.

Dating was very casual. I had female GFs who were surprised I rang them back when I said I would. Quite a few female friends short step to dating. Then you screw it up due to inexperience basically.

There is always something old about me regarding this thing. I never betray my gf in any casual mean, I never took opportunity to get someone that like me even when other think she's pretty, if I don't get the feeling that she's the one, I just lost all the will to be with her.

And whenever we were in relationship I always treat them as if she's going to be my future wife, one of them told me when I was planning about our future life, that I was insane that we are just teen and those things are far-ahead, I was thinking "dang, she's right".

Yea, but my friends fool around so much. I just can't take this matter not seriously, and whenever someone not serious approach me I treat her not serious also. I always a grandpa in this thing, even when I was teenager, I never really that "fun"

Anyone play out-run growing up?

Yep, i just read this lil feature earlier -

Why I think OutRun is the perfect summer video game – Reader’s Feature

A reader recalls his childhood years playing OutRun in the arcades and the many ways that Sega invoked the spirit of summer freedom.

If my teenage years playing OutRun in the arcades has made my ‘grown up’ driving that little bit more reckless then I should take this opportunity to apologise to my fellow motorists. Indeed, my appalling lack of restraint behind Sega’s chunky steering wheel was the reason I never got further than the game’s second stages. But that didn’t matter because OutRun wasn’t just about driving, it was about summer and all the freedom, fun, and adventure the season brings.

When I first saw OutRun, back in the 80s, I was immediately smitten. It was classy and expensive (50p a go!) and had state-of-the-art graphics and great music. However, when I look back now, my sense of nostalgia amplifies the game’s seasonal theme and reminds me that it was, and still is, the perfect summer game.

There’s an overwhelming amount of detail to suggest that the game’s designers have a passion for the season. Every screen, every frame, and every sound in OutRun seems designed to let players know that this game takes place at the height of a magnificent summer. Even the logo features a palm tree and a shimmering blue ocean.

The game’s producer, Yu Suzuki, has said that he wanted to make a driving game more than a racing game. He clearly wanted players to enjoy the journey more than the destination. The scenery as much as the gameplay.

And what scenery it is. The opening stage is a beautiful coastal road lined with palm trees, white sands, and colourful beach huts. There are windsurfers out on the waves and serene blue skies overhead. Further stages feature a dusky savannah, rolling meadows, a vineyard, and a desert. But, obviously, it’s the opening level everyone will see and it’s the one where the game’s sunny ambitions shine the brightest.

It’s also the level with the coolest sounding name. It’s called Coconut Beach Boulevard and if the person who thought of that was trying to come up with the most tropical sounding stage name possible, I think they may well have succeeded.

Even the music tracks have names with seasonal connotations, while the music itself reflects summer moods as well as summer activities. Passing Breeze is a laidback jazz number whose dreamy riffs are well suited to those summer days when you just want to sit back and do as little as possible. Magical Sound Shower, on the other hand, is a fast and exciting song with an accelerating pace which fits the driving nicely, as well as evoking that sense of freedom and adventure that we all remember from long summer holidays. It also features some Caribbean drums to further enhance OutRun’s tropical credentials.

One of the unsung heroes of the game’s score is Last Wave. It’s a mellow, slightly melancholy song with gently breaking waves playing in the background and it always kicks in on the game over screen. That screen is truly special. It depicts a gorgeous sunset with palm trees in silhouette. When it first appears, a row of little pixel-based sports cars race across the screen, the smoke from their exhausts clearing to reveal the names of those lucky and skilful enough to get the highest scores.

I think the fact that the game over screen depicts a sunset is significant. If OutRun has a story it is simply that two people went out racing for the day. When the race is over, the day is over. Last Wave has a downbeat tone because everyone’s fun on a beautiful summer’s day has come to an end.

By contrast, the beginning of the game is a bright, loud, crowded starting line, the screenshot of which has become one of the most iconic images of 80s gaming. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s also an iconic image of summer. There are plenty of other games which have seasonal themes and visuals but as far as capturing the magic of summer goes, I don’t think any of them can outrun OutRun.

Let's not forget Chase H.Q. ''Lets go Mr Driver'' -

Yo I played that game! But on snes, it is called "Super Chase HQ", but never try the arcade before.

For arcade racing this was the one that I played:

Gentleman start your engine!

I didn't fool around a good chunk of my friends did. They liked the dumb ones my friends were the nice girls next door off to uni.

Back in the days, there were things in each peoples house that make your friend come over.

Mine was a VHS of Beavis and Butthead: Do America (I forgot where I got this, but group of friends just coming and going watching over this, laughing over something that I thought right now, not that funny)

VHS of Woodstock 1995, I remember the Band that were playing: Collective Soul, Live, Nine Inch Nails, Porno For Pyros, Primus, etc. (I got this from my sister's friend). This was always an attraction to watch, peoples were just really hype watching this.

VHS of Radiohead 1996 live at metro (from my sister's friend), we were watching this over and over again.

Random video-clip that I caught from mtv and record it to vhs. It's surprisingly entertaining mix tapes, despite the not so clean cut, but peoples enjoy the clip, especially Just by Radiohead, peoples just mesmerized by the clip. The things that I always want to caught back then but unable to was disco 2000 by pulp, now I can just type it on youtube and watch it.

Things that I enjoy watching by myself actually VHS of Beatles Anthology.

Now, we almost share many of our entertainment, since entertainment is pretty much digitalized, and many of them are free, it becomes somewhat common entertainment, we share link instead of sharing or lending a record.

The only concert I watched was Mr Big lmaoo, I bought ticket for Alanis, but I was 12 at that time and there was a huge uproar that in December there would be peoples passing around HIV virus through syringe while saying "welcome to the AIDS world", so as a stupid kid me and 3 other of my friends sold that tickets. Regret it till this day. Lol and now I interact with so many HIV positive because my sister work closely to support them.
