Who has joined in on this madness?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...il-fools-joke-that-became-a-global-obsession/

Everywhere I go I see people walking holding their cell phones in front of their face and immediately I know they are searching for Pokémon.

It was an April Fool's joke 2 years ago.
Now it's causing all kinds of mayhem with people venturing outside to find Pokémon.

The insidious game makers even put extra Pokémon near landmarks.
Sooner or later someone will die out in the desert playing this game, or step outside in Australia and immediately perish to the local wildlife.

You have found a rare Erdogan!

Every time I reiterate my reasons for not owning a smartphone (or any kind of phone beyond the landline that's attached to the phone jack in my living room), some other stupid thing comes around to validate my reasons even more.

I may be sitting glued to a computer screen most of the day (dividing my time among email, posting on forums, playing Civ, and writing my NaNoWriMo entry), but I'm in no danger of walking out into traffic, falling into a pond, walking off a cliff, or getting shot for trespassing.

Iam so tired from walking, but must collect moar pokemons !
Also thank god I dont live in Florida

its been said that people with depression can benefit from it, getting out in the fresh air and walking about.
might help overweight kids too, tho its only a matter of time before McDonalds start paying to have them found in their stores

It's FINALLY out in Canada, so of course I'm playing it.

Contrary to popular allegation, you don't NEED to be constantly looking at your screen, and in general you don't need to venture on private property - and most people, while they look frequently, pay attention to their surroundings (and stay on sidewalks).

The media, of course, talk about the one-in-tens-of-thousands who don't.

applying common sense to this app prevents any freak accidents or stupid encounters. you can turn it on and keep it in your pocket; you're supposed to stop whenever anything happens anyway, i don't understand how anyone would walk in front of traffic

I'm just ignoring it. It will go away like all the other social/mobile gaming fads.

It probably will, but it'll be a sad day.

I remember someone noting that in one day, or stroke, Nintendo has gotten thousands of kids/people out of the house and playing outside again for hours. It's quite ingenious and has reignited a lot of previously dead activity at parks and various neighborhood locations.

I just wish it had come out when I was still on a college campus, I've heard it's an absolute blast right now. When I try it in my neighborhood, I just run into a bunch of grade schoolers and twelve year olds. Not the most interesting of company.

I'll be about as sad as when Farmville and Angry Birds went away.

People should just go do real outdoor activities. They're more fun, better exercise, cheaper, more social, can be done without propping up the microtransaction and advertising industries, and you develop skills that don't go to complete waste in a couple years when people move to the next fad.

"Playing outside" at a standing/walking pace is only worth marginally more than sitting still. Possibly less if people aren't wearing enough sunscreen.

Except that, as the whole world around us demonstrates, far too many people weren't going to do that. So while in an ideal world they wouldn't need the game ; yes, it most certainly WILL be sad if and when the game goes away

And while it may not be particularly convincing exercise, saying it's barely better than sitting still is bovine manure of the worst kind. Plus, the game does encourage significantly more than just stepping outside and wandering around ; some of the items and goals in the game require walking several kilometers to get what you want. The faster you get that distance, the sooner you get your reward. A daily leisurely stroll isn't much for health; but a multi-kilometers hike added to your daily routine is most certainly beneficial.

Man this board is a cesspit of grumpy neckbeardy negativity sometimes.

Level 23 Instinct here.

As a long term Ingress player I am loving the massification of AR gaming and the slow learning of all the tricks of split attention walking and GPS micronavigation. It's also great to see so many families and couples out playing and yeah it's been good for the mental health of a few people I know.

You don't have to be in a basement to act like a snotty neckbeardo.

at least those ones are confined to the internet, the ones who roam outside of their houses are the ones affecting people in real life too
How long will it take before someone dies ?
somebody already happened upon a body while searching for pokemon, cause of death was unrelated to the game but it'll happen eventually

It's way better on many levels (exercise, socialization, fresh air, etc.).

I don't plan to play this game & am outside enough already but I think it's a cool idea & would get into it if I were younger.

It's also totally spying on everyone & certainly the info gained from this game will be used for evil things like surveillance & illegal spying and information gathering.
