The preview thread

There is something that i detest about the Russian models i made, so i think the set will never be made...

Also i do not think another european medieval set is actually needed.

BarbarianCity.jpg

Finally got some stable barbarian cities. Still working on figuring out how to make them useful though. Despite appearances, they don't actually produce anything. I gave them the units they have using Ctrl+Shift+F1. The Barbarian AI doesn't seem to value protecting cities, either - the Swordsman is doing so, but those Spearmen just left Pisae completely undefended. Barbarian cities don't have any borders, and thus enemy units aren't slowed down at all when approaching them. Although, despite this lack of any borders, workers in barbarian cities can (to no avail) work any tile in the fat cross (maybe only the square if the city has less than 10 culture?). Also different from usual is that you can't establish an embassy in the barbarian capital (after taking the screenshot I gave myself Writing). So whether barbarian cities will be anything other than free pickings for other civs, I'm not sure yet. But it is kind of neat to see the game not blow up with barbarian cities.

As completely hopeless as the barbarian AI is at defending its cities, the best use I see for this is perhaps as representing a 'horde' civilization. Give them a bunch of size 2 (or 1 with culture/no raze) cities, put lots of barbarian camps around their cities, and the barbarian camps will produce enough units that it isn't hopelessly trivial to conquer. Then when it is conquered, the vanquisher can incorporate the barbarian settlements into their empire.

How do you give the barbs cities?

Great development :)

Although i am not sure why you posted it here.

Thanks. It's posted here both because I've been creating a lot of threads lately, and because there isn't currently a publicly-available way to give the barbarians city. Thus, it's a bit of a preview.

How do you give the barbs cities?

I changed the city ownership from 'Civilization-> Romans' to 'Civilization-> Barbarians'. In Firaxis's editor you can't do this, but I'm making a new editor and hadn't disabled that yet. Now that I know it doesn't cause anything to blow up, I probably will leave it enabled. I also changed the barbarian's cultural group to something other than 'None'.

Thank you all :)

@Ares: no, i am not using it, since the rest of the uploaded work does not either. I hope it is not too much trouble for others to make the change if they want to.
If i decide to do it i might in the future alter all the sets to this though ;)

This is something I don't understand... why don't you rather prevent a known mistake from the beginning instead of uploading something that needs to be fixed afterwards?

It is not some error of the graphics, neither does it make them unusable. In fact i suspect that most of the people who downloaded them use them as they are still.

As for the reason why i am not changing them now, well it has to do with the rest of them being unchanged. I dislike lack of consistency, for reasons which are not really relevant to this discussion :)

Edit: if you want to, however, when you alter the rest of the sets for your own use (if you do that with all), you could send me the file and i will upload the altered versions.
I suspect it would be a lot of work though.

Yeah, but where's the consistency when you need to fix everything else anyway? Why not save work and time?

Agreed with Ares here. I wouldn't say it so "roughly", but I've already spent a lot of time correcting your wonderful city graphics Kyriakos. They are great, BUT they need to be corrected if you want them to stay where they are when the era or size changes (or if you build walls). Until now, I have generally corrected the first era only, for testing purposes. And kept the rest of the work for later.

If someone alters all of them, send them to my email address and i will upload the new ones :)

Edit: Ok, i decided to use Pounder's template for the Roman set. But if there are any volunteers for the rest, you know my email address ;)

And here they are with the new placement:
