OK. With news that the PS3 is now being put back from a Christmas 2006 release to a March 2007 release for Europe (Japan and the US being unaffected) due to it's Betamax....... sorry Blue-Ray player not being produced fast enough, I'm curious as to everyone's opinions on Sony's next generation console? Will you buy one? Has the price put you off? Does the idea that it's being aimed more as a media center than a console making you worried? Or will you be first in line to buy one, safe in the knowledge you're going to be buying one of the fastest systems ever released?

Personally, I've bought a PS2, and had a PS1 before that, but with all the rumours surrounded the PS3 I decided against waiting and went out and bought a Xbox 360 and now I'm glad I have, not only is it very enjoyable to play, but with games such as Dead Rising, CoD3, Halo 3 and GTA4 coming out on it it's an exciting time. Also news has it that MS have bought the rights for BOTH FIFA 07 and the next Pro Evo game solely for the 360, so the PS3 has lost alot of ground IMHO.

So, what do you think? Will the PS3 come out too late and too expensive to really dominate in the way it's predacessor did? or will it come out and blow all away who stands before it?

Also, can anyone post any rumorus they've heard about the console. I keep hearing some but not sure which to believe. The most recent I've heard is that the games will be 'locked' to the console, once you play a game on that computer you can't play it on any others.

I think they may end up doing a Dreamcast... Xbox 360 seems to be the way to go (Wii just seems too quirky).

This is better placed in other games ;). The only PS unit I play with is PSP.

....... oh yeah, sorry. *prays to the Mods* Oh dear Turner, I know thou is lurking, please remove this thread from it's place in OT and allow it to reside in it's true home, the dark and mysterious realm of 'Other games'

I've even abandoned the PSP, instead choosing to relive my youth with a truely awesome, Nintendo DS.

The unknowns associated with Blue-ray, the PS3 being put back, the price AND the fact that Dell recalled alot of it's laptops due to faulty Sony batteries......... what will happen....

You can simply PM Turner or any mod to request to move this thread. No need to pray to him, he is not God :p.

Anyway, I am still sticking with PSP and the PC.

He may not be God but he can smite me just as easy :p

It just seems like Sony have had nothing but problems with their PS3.

They get an amazing chip to run the system, only to find it has a problem talking to the other components in the computer. Then they making the controller look like a boomerang, only to have to scrap the idea because the people who own the Duel-Shock technology refused to allow it to be used again, then everyone finds out the price so it's pretty much been priced out of the 'Kiddie-market' unless they have parents who spoil them silly

For myself, I'm not to keen on the PS/3. I like what it has to offer...the blu-ray and backwards compatibility all the way to the PS/1. But $600 is a heft price tag. My computer cost less than that (by a whopping $1!) and has way more potential than the PS/3 does. So right now I'm inclined to stay with my PC (which is how I voted).

however, there may come a time down the road when I'll buy a PS/3, maybe even an Xbox 360. We'll see.

OMG, $600,...... is that true?. I have paid less for cars. Ok the PS3 is going to be really fast, ok cool, it has blu-ray, umm don't DVD's work just fine? you can play old PS games, well xbox and nintendo will be doing the same with there games.

I don't see why it needs to be $600, it's insane. Maybe Xbox can get away with selling a $600 system due to they have a much older base playing there games. I can't see mom buying a PS3 for xmas, they are going to be getting a xbox or a Wii (can't wait for super smash bros.)

Actually, people are saying that the PS/3 is going to be cheap because the blu-ray players out now cost over $1,000. So the PS/3 with a blu-ray selling for $600 is a bargain.

Not sure on the price, tho. That's the last one I've heard quoted.

It's a bargin only as long as Blu-Ray wins the DVD wars..... and even then. Only the EXTREME techno-kiddie will want a blu-ray player RIGHT NOW. For people with a passing interest they'll wait for the price to plummit, just as normal DVD's did.

I think the Xbox has gone the right way about it. they've put in an original DVD player into their system with an external HD-DVD which can be added later.

Everything seems to rest on the blu-ray. If it wins, then Sony will be laughing, if it looses then the PS3 will bomb and take the type of share values with it that make Japanese stockbrokers jump from very tall buildings.....

I don't think it'll be quite that bad. But there will be a lot of people out there with blu-rays that are going to be as useful as a betamax machine. Wait a minute, wasn't beta max a sony invention?

Anyways, if blu-ray does lose, we'll see a PS/3.5 that'll have the winning standard.

yeah, Betamax was a Sony idea that bombed thats why I was comparing them. IT happened before and with the constant tinkering Sony are doing it may happen again.

Not that I like blu-ray, but I certainly hope that if HD-DVD wins out that it doesn't kill the playstation. The playstation is, IMO, the better gaming console out there. We have all three, the GameCube, PS/2, and Xbox. I by far prefer playing on the PS/2. I would really hate to see the PlayStation go the route of the betamax.

see the thing is, I'm also a PS person. the only reason I bought an Xbox was that it looked the better of the two when you took into consideration all the things which Sony are doing to it. If they released a next gen GAMES console without the whole 'media center'/blue-ray ideas attached to it, then it would come up to the Xbox 360, give it vicious kick to the nuts and the Wii would run for mommy.

But the fact they're doing everything to throw it's weight behind Blu-ray it's loosing ground. Loosing the GTA Franchise, along with the FIFA Soccer and Pro Evo is a huge loss. I mean, I only bought a PS2 for GTA.

Sony are petrified that it'll loose the DVD Wars, So they took one look at the PS2 and saw how successful it was and realised if they shoved the Blu-ray into the PS3 then it would be successful cause everyone bought PS2's but that's just not the case. they're being too experimental with a system that worked wonders before they started to play with it and for that reason I think it'll go down faster than a Saturn

How did they lose GTA? Last I heard, GTA4 is still premiering on the PS/3.

But yeah, I can see how they're frightened. And the PS/2 was damn successful. Trying to copy that while at the same time changing a lot of it just doesn't make sense. I can see the first gen PS/3s having a lot of problems because of all the new engineering on it.

Perhaps it's a good thing that they're pushing it back. Hopefully this means they're taking more time to beta/stress test the machines, and fix any early bugs.

You said 'Saturn'. I'm thinking, "But Saturn was one of GM's better decisions!"

They haven't lost GTA. They've just lost exclusivity (sp?) of it, it'll come out on the 360 at the same time but the thing is, I bought a PS2 BECAUSE GTA was coming out only on it first, and I'm sure other people did too, the PS3 doesn't (to me) seem to have any big huge games that will make people think "oh yeah, the PS3" I mean when you think of Xbox you think "Halo"

Also, it should be noted that when the PS3 now comes out in Europe it is coming out around the same time that Halo 3 comes out for the 360

Nope!

My story exactly.

My vote was I have a 360, don't need one.

I'm getting one, the free online capabilties and computer like abilities plus superior hardware makes me more inclined to buy PS3. Oh and MGS4! If anything Sony can count on MGS fanboys.
