What the hell is Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus even about? And I don't want the quiz bowl definition (language and reality linkages, limitations of science, all that jazz), I mean: what is he actually saying?

Americans will pronounce 'war' in Warwick and 'ham' in Birmingham.
Not the wowik (or worik) or Burmingam (or Bumminum) that they ought to sound like.

I would have never thought to read Birmingham as "bumminum" or "berminum", I would have read it "burmingam" knowing that the H in the "-ham" termination is almost never read, at least in the various British accents that I've heard. :)

Ok, this might be what you ruled out, but anyway: He's saying that the world and language share the same form, and the language is the image of the world. In same way that notes or the carving on a record are image of a song.

The image can't tell it's relation to the pictured thing. You can't see from Mona Lisa itself for example what is it's relation to the person who was model of the painting. Also the language can't talk of itself meaningfully at least. Therefore metaphysics is meaningless.

He was wrong of course, for one reason because language isn't image of the world, phrases like "pass the potatoes, please" or "how old are you?" are not images of anything in the world. And his thoughts about atomic sentences is pure fantasy.

Which part of Britainland are you from? (If any, of course)

Bedfordshire, Western East Anglia.

Why can't you just spell them phonetically if thats how they should be pronounced?

Has place-name language ever been logical like that? Definitely not in the UK ('burgh' and 'borough' have the same pronunciation, usually) but what about America? (Genuine question here.)

And how are things at Jorja Tek? :p

Welcome to another installment of "University Talk". I do not know much about which Italian universities are considered the best. Which Italian universities are considered the best?

Proper nouns in the US violate many pronunciation rules, but less than the UK.

Come on, somebody must know about it.

Ive never heard of it, but looked what wikipedia had to said about it, and it seems it is published like any encyclopedia on the subject, so there's no reason to suspect it would be inferior to them.

Do Europeans have to take a certain amount of years of Latin?

It's not necessary here, and I suppose it is nowhere, at best in Italy (or Vatican).

How are the Universities of Warwick, Bristol, UCL, California, Wisconsin and Connecticut seen in your country? Held in high prestige? Not heard of?

None of them has any significant reputation, Madison Wisconsin is the one I've heard most of. I suppose I've once or twice ran across with Bristol and Warwick. In addition to the usuals (Harvard, Yale, MIT; Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge) the ones I have highest picture of are LSE and Ann Arbor. (But I'm not so much into knowing about quality of universities anyhow).

Which Italian universities are considered the best?

Bologna has high reputation, but at least part of it is it's age (oldest/one of the oldest universities).

It doesn't matter on your actual knowledge of these universities - just if you have heard of them helps a lot. :)

Please in the name of all that is good and unamerican in this world, no! HAVE MERCY ON OUR SOULS!!!!!!!!
