My mum wants to get tiles for the kitchen but wants to know how many. The tiles are 12 inches^2. The room is 333 by 321 cm but with two sections cut into it that are 110 by 116 cm and 94 by 79 cm. How do I work out how many tiles are needed? I tried to do it and the answer I got was first 10 tiles, then almost 3000, then 4, so I guess I worked it out wrong.

12" = 30cm.
So 333cm = (roughly) 10 tiles x 321cm 10 tiles. 100 tiles.
Subtract 4x4=16 tiles and 3x3=9 tiles. 75 tiles.
Add 10% breakage and wastage. 82.5 tiles
If the person doing the tiling is less than expert add another 4-5 for wastage and breakage.

I guess my problem was I was doing it more complicated. I first did 333 * 321, making 106893, then subtracting 110 * 116 (12760) and 94 * 79 (7426), making 86707, and I tried to work it out from there.
Is that 12 inches^2 or 12x12 inches? It makes a big difference.
To work out exactly how many tiles are needed we need to know where these protrusions are and what orientation so that we can work out how many tiles you need for the small areas which will require pieces, or, if no pieces, exactly how much space they'll really take up in terms of tiling.
Roughly 30x30 into 333x321 is 119 tiles. Take 14 and 9 off for the two sections and you need 96 tiles.

If you are just going to a local Homebase or whatever it isnt that important to get exactly the right number of tiles. If you have to pop out for another pack or take a pack back it's hardly the end of the world. Rough estimate will work for getting the right order of magnitude.

That's more or less common these days. The poll creators have high confidence that very small sample sizes are significant and an accurate representation.
