If we just move Gitmo, give it a new name and people remain held without charges etc...

Does that really count as "closing Gitmo"?

Isn't the big deal about moving it to US soil that the inmates now get protection of US law? Or has some law been passed that defecates on human rights with regard to suspected terrorists been passed in the US?

How has the adverse weather conditions affected you/your country? It seems quite widespread in the Northenr hemisphere with 10C colder weather than usual in many highly populated regions.

Of course here its being treated as an apocalypse of sorts. This is a nation that finds the weather a fascinating topic of conversation despite having the blandest, mildest weather on the planet. Now that theres newsworthy weather its practically the only thing I've talked to anyone about in the last few days, and my work involves endless idle chat. Nevertheless it would be interesting to hear how others have dealt with it.

I'm not sure if this deserves its own thread or not...

Reading one of the threads a hillarious actor/comedian popped up into my head and I wanted to watch him on Youtube, lest I forgot his name...Can you help me?

*He starred and wrote several comedic detective stories from about the 1980s-90s.
*He has very, very characteristic almost bright white hair - almost like a caricuture.
*I suppose he looks like Dick van Dyke.

TY

Thanks for the quick response Cutlass it's him alright :goodjob:

I was going to go out to get more filler for the gaps between the floorboards, but since this meant taking the car found other similar tasks to occupy myself, what with the roads being a touch icy. Also when I realised there was no coffee for the morning I had to go to the shop and it was definitely a bit parky by 9pm.

The media overblow these things. A while back all those truckers were stuck on the Spanish border and the beeb were leading the interviewees for horror stories. The trucker they had said spending a long weekend on the franco-spanish border was quite pleasant really. Again pressed to express the suffering of the trapped the trucker said "well, it's not so good for the lads further back in the queue. The bar in the next village doesnt have a pool table, only babyfoot".

The media have this pre written horror story for bad weather, and they are going to flog that donkey just as hard as they can.

The sun was shining. Felt good.

@Shekwan: I'm hating it. For the first time in my life I was scared while in a landing plane, as I saw the runway completely covered in snow... How are they even allowed to land under those conditions, is it safe to land on such a surface? Also, in Bucharest the snow-cleaning machines were stuck in the snow... rendering the whole city immobile for a while. The idea that the machines that are supposed to remove snow were blocked and couldn't do their job because of the very object they were supposed to be taking away is unbelievable...

That's apart from the fact that my body simply doesn't cope well with coldness and I'm constantly feeling bad in cold weather. I'm shivering every day at least 1-2 times although I'm wearing thick, layered clothing especially to avoid it. Almost nobody believes me about how cold I'm feeling most of the year and how good it is for me in the middle of the hot summer. My avatars have always been palm trees exactly because of this reason. I just hate cold weather, period. Under any reasonable circumstances, I would choose a warmer place rather than a colder one.

Shivering once or twice a day in mid winter is par for the course. It's winter. It's supposed to be cold. It just makes the whisky in front of the fire in the evening all the better.

At what radius, in kilometers, is a planet big enough to be considered a "super-earth"? (i.e., the cut-off point between a regular Earth-sized world and a super-earth)

Work has been closed since monday. I wanted to run winter training to take advantage of the weather, but apparently health and safety thought that it was a bit too dangerous.

If I stood outside in the freezing cold for 30 minutes would that be like going on run? In terms of calories used to stay warm.

Yeah the media are really getting all they can out of this weather thing. Its not like there isn't other news too - the Iris Robinson thing and the Togo football team shooting are ripe for more coverage.

@Mirc

That must have been terrifying.
I'm not a bad flyer either but its pretty rational to be scared in that situation.

Only if you shiver vigorously enough. If your body responds by lowering your temperature, then you're actually burning less calories, because chemical reactions slow down in the cold.

Even if it would, it wouldn't be close to building muscles like running would. So you'd end up thin and weak. :p
