While there were security and customs checks there were never passport or visa requirements between Ireland and the UK.

A passport is still required to travel from Ireland or the UK to the Schengen area and vice versa.

You can use a driving license to get to Ireland though.

AFAIK there has never been a requirement to have a passport to go between Ireland and the UK and the border has never been closed.

I crossed from Ireland to Northern Ireland and back during a trip a summer or two ago with nothing in the way. Or maybe my memory's bad... but certainly nothing like passport control in standard outside-EU international borders.

I put two plates of different sizes in the same microwave for the same time. Why does the smaller plate come out with a higher temperature? I had to use an oven mitt to get the dang thing out. The big plate I could carry with my bare hand.

(There was food on the plates but they were the same things. I had one yesterday and one today).

The energy needed to heat the smaller plate is much less than the energy needed to heat the large plate. What you did is put two differently sized plates in through roughly the same amount of radiation, and the smaller one, being less massive, heated up more, and the large one, being more massive, heated less.
