This is French:

Marine Nationale

How is the "tion" part pronounced? Like English which would be "shun" or where each letter is pronounced, like "tee on"?

a combination of the two, actually.

si-yun

Question for college students: Is it required to have your books by the first day of class?

Question for a girl: How exactly do you put mascara on? I'm afraid if I ask any of my female friends in real life, they'll shun me for being eighteen and not knowing how to put it on.

Depends on the class. I like to be prepared.

You'll survive if you don't, but it's a good idea to have 'em.

Counter-question: what the hell do you need mascara for now? If you've gone eighteen years without, surely you realize how unnecessary it is.

It's pretty self-explanatory, really. Buy some. Find a mirror. Open mascara. You see that little brush? First, wipe the chunks off it by pulling the wand out at an angle, so the brush rubs against the inside rim of the tube. Chunks are bad. Once you've got the chunks off, just comb the brush through your eyelashes. Close the eye you're working on, keep the other eye open to see what you're doing. When I do it, I start with the top of the top eyelash (it might take two gos for any of these), then the bottom of the top eyelash, then re-dip, re-clean, top of the other top eyelash, bottom of the other top eyelash, re-dip, re-clean, then the top of each bottom eyelash. Chunks are bad. Don't use any other makeup until the mascara is dry, and if you haven't done it before, do your mascara before any other makeup so when you screw up, you don't have to redo the eyeshadow you've wiped off with the oops mascara.

Chunks are bad. Also bad is when you have too much goop on the brush and you end up with your eyelashes clumping together. There's really no way to fix that other than taking it all off and starting over. If you're going to do more than one coat, wait for the first one to dry. You really don't need more than one coat. Hell, you don't even need one coat. You're not a Dapper Dan Doll.

If you want to practice, get some regular makeup remover and practice before you shower for a couple of days, and just take it off in the shower.

Take all of this with whatever salt comes with the fact that I wear mascara maybe every few months, tops.

That's the thing that gets me wearing makeup sometimes too. Funny thing is, the guys usually don't like it.

I usually only wear a little foundation, but I don't know. Sometimes it's just nice to feel pretty. Guys can go take a hike when I'm in that kind of mood.

From my guy opinion. Mascara and Eyeliner- Yes. But I hate when a girl with light colored hair overdoes it. I once saw a blonde girl with too much mascara. Jesus. :(

Anything else becomes unnecessary at that point. To me at least.

As a general rule I'd say, no colored anything on your face and I'm fine.

My honest opinion is that make-up was invented for a reason. It accentuates features that for whatever reason appear attractive, and foundation smooths over pockmarks that aren't.

It's all good, and I don't understand the way that some boys and a lot of girls (around here) say that make-up makes you look like a slut and that 'natural beauty' is what counts. That's a load of balls to me. The girls are just jealous that you look more attractive just because you put some effort in, and the guys are just parroting what they've heard their girlfriends say.

Or maybe I'm just odd in liking make-up.

You can spend a lot of time putting effort into your looks without makeup. One of my girlfriends spent about a half an hour every morning with facial exfoliators, scrubs, moisturizers, cremes, all types of stuff I can hardly even spell. And I think that alone makes a girl look fine without having to put a lot of make-up on.

I personally don't care how sexually attractive a girl is, if you want to please your sexuality just look at porn. And in a loving relationship, the love aspect is drastically more important to me. But this is off-topic so I'm not replying about it further.

There's no real "ideal amount" of make-up. Any amount is good, if it's applied properly. There's girls that wear no make-up at all, and look great. And there's girls that wear LOADS of make-up, and look great. Some girls just don't know how to "do" make-up; such girls would look better without it, rather than trying to do something they don't know how to do. Obviously it would be even better if they learnt how to do it well :)

It's really not the amount you put on, but the "look" you're after/get.

Those are everywhere here.

I think it looks nice.

I am a guy and I wear mascara regularly for acting. I have very sensitive eyes. I find that applying it is easier if instead of trying to rub the mascara brush onto the eyelashes, I hold the brush in place and "blink" my eyelashes across the stationary brush. This works especially well on the top lashes; for the bottom lashes you have to rub the brush onto the eyelash somewhat.

Another tip: for removing make-up including mascara, I find cold cream to be a pain in the rear, so I keep a packet of baby wipes in my make-up case. One or two baby wipes will remove a whole face of make-up. To remove the mascara, just "pinch" the baby wipes across your eyelashes and rub it right off.
