The Rules of Being a Man

Obviously you have not seen some ads in Australia. This is a t-shirt from an add for a 4*4. You see a guy at a feminist rally pretending to be with their cause. You see him turn around and this is what the front of the t-shirt says.
"Make me my dinner." The women stop in disgust. On the back it says.
"If you drive a Hi-lux, You'll think you are indestructable."
BTW, they actually did make these t-shirts available for sale. Must be an Australian Male thing.

I don't think a grown-up person who attacks me physically is in any position to complain if I reply in kind.

I exaggerated when I said I'd necessarily hit someone if he or she hit me, tho; if the attacker is pathetic enough, I may content myself to restraining him/her (which is violence in my book, as well as of those I've done it to, but whatever), or in extreme cases just parry the blows till the person walks of crying because her (never happened with a he) hands hurt.

The point is, I don't care about an attacker's gender; I care about his or her strength, size, competence, and intent.
I seeing restraining someone as pacifying them personally. And I'd always go for that option. I appreciate what you are saying about having a standard response to violence from any gender. That's the ideal, but our socialisation and instincts lead us (and me) to think and act otherwise.

EDIT - @ Hero: Afaik T-shirt slogans are a pretty immature way of getting a point across, even if that is a grossly misogynistic one :crazyeye:. When I think of men and manliness I don't think of T-shirts however rude the slogan may be (not that I spend any time thinking about men of course  ).

The never-ending, Castlemain XXXX, carnival float (just packed with Aussie brutes drinking tinnies) advert was an absolute classic though.

Well, if both perpetrator and victim think it's violence, what you think is fairly academic, isn't it?

Socialization apparently didn't work on me.

bah, a real man can pretty much do anything he feels comfortable about. Including breaking these rules. :p I've broken most of these rules before, and certainly don't feel bad about it.

I'm presuming that I would be one of the two in the scenario if I am to offer my opinion on it. So it's hardly academic. Rather such a pacifying view would have a directly diminishing influence on the level of violence in the incident.

Well it's just the instincts you gotta curb now :D

That's the first truthful thing I've read you post! :goodjob:

I playfully hit women all the time. Great way to see if they like you. If they act all offended, they'll make a face and go all cold. If they like you, they'll say some meaningless thing and hit you back. Also, fighting over armrests and seats is helpful as well.

But note, I have never actually been attacked by a woman.

once my girlfriend slapped me so hard i was seeing stars!

it was beautiful, and it caught me totally offguard, she didnt look pissed or anything beforehand, not the slightest clue she was mad

I saw Bush shake hands with Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigerian President and Chairman of the African Union. Well they shook hands and then OO grabbed GWB's hand again and kind of stood there holding it, while someone else went on speaking. There were these two leaders, of extremely macho reputations and cultures, just standing in front on the world press holding hands.
Bush has a extremely macho reputation? where? certainly not where i live, he's borderline gay-in-denial in my opinion. :mischief:
Good guidlines, i seem to follow all of them instinictely anyway, so that makes me more manly than most.
As for dancing:
It is acceptable when drunk or that slow dance to secure your chances of some action. Sober dancing without your hands on a woman's ass is totally unacceptable.

Also, might have been mentioned, but real men are not allowed to be seen liking love songs, especially boy bands.

What about dancing? Is dancing unmanly?
What a stupid question!

And check this one out - brilliant!!

Well the way I'm going I guess a real man should never
>contemporary freeform jazz
>German schupluttler folk dancing complete with leather shorts
>any folk dancing that involves lifting the partners dress
>polka and waltz, as you can really hold tight and subtly caress the partner
... as i have done all of the above :cringe:

[Dancing] This should only be done at weddings.

Amen!

 - I knew I'd clash with Rambuchan (again) on this one, but hadn't expected the Travolta pictures to back it up...

Is it just me, or is this really turning into a metro vs. retro type debate?

You are passing judgement simply on the Travolta pictures. I mean what have I actually said about them?

Dancing could go either way I think...

I've been playing DDR for since like mid February and discovered that most girls love the game ;)

In fact, I've even had a couple over and we've played a few times.

Dancing's good.
Though, to be honest, I don't think I've ever seen a white man dance.

Not even you uncle :wow: .
