The Scottish Sagas (Viking RFC)

wow, Norse Iberia:)

Colonize Amity, Oregon! Yah, no-one probably knows where that is. 50 miles south of Portland, Oregon. It has 1500 people and it very small.

As the Kingdom of Scotland had been charging the French tribute for their intervention in the war, the French Kingdom was rapidly becoming bankrupt. By the year 1400 the French had no option but to voluntarily vassalise under Scottish rule.

The French had been making their own gains in the war against Spain, but their captured city of Barcelone was quickly recaptured by the Spanish. This defeat was also a factor in France seeking Scottish stewardship.

civ4screenshot0123.jpg

As the secrets of Optics had recently been learnt the Scots sent out scouting caravels to explore for new worlds, and to escape the dangerous Spanish navy, as modern as the Scots.

civ4screenshot0127.jpg

Meanwhile back in Iberia the Scottish conquest continued unabated. Though grudgingly accepting the Scottish flag the Norse King Hraldr successfully led the capture of the Spanish capital Madrid.

civ4screenshot0128.jpg

Out to sea the cunning Spanish had followed the Scottish fleet, and a pitched sea battle ensued. Luckily the surviving caravel managed to flee westwards to shelter at a new coastline.

civ4screenshot0129.jpg

civ4screenshot0130.jpg

In the east another settling party had been sent out by Lulea, and in 1415 they built Abo on the Finnish coast of the Baltic. The locals shared the same ancestry as the settlers, and the settlement quickly prospered.

civ4screenshot0131x.jpg

As the Portuguese had helped soften up the defences in the Spanish city Santiago it was easy for one of Njal’s old warbands to fight their way in and raise the Scottish flag over the city.

civ4screenshot0132.jpg

Not to be outdone, the same year the other Norse warbands formed under Njal’s banner captured the Spanish city of Cartagena. The Jewish inhabitants were pleased to see the new Scottish Kingdom did not follow their founder’s religious genocide, and spared the city.

civ4screenshot0133o.jpg

Even as the Scottish war machine headed for the last Spanish city the treacherous aristocracy in Heulva rose up against their King and, realising they faced immediate annihilation allied themselves with the Portuguese.

civ4screenshot0136.jpg

As the threat to Iberia and to Scottish colonisation had been vanquished the Scottish King released most of his Iberian holding to his allies Portugal and France. Only Cartagena remained part of the Kingdom of Scotland.

civ4screenshot0137.jpg

Happily the fleeing Scottish caravel had contained a sizeable Scottish army, and when they came across the Central American cities of the Aztecs they landed in force. By persuading other local tribes to rise up against the Aztecs they quickly captured Huaxyacac, which sat across a great strategic river connecting two oceans.

civ4screenshot0135.jpg

Another native city Yax Mutal was subsequently captured by Scottish-led natives, and strangely the Portuguese offered to run the distant city. The Scottish did not need another city in the Central American corridor, and gifted the city to the Portuguese.

civ4screenshot0138.jpg

With the Iberian War over Scottish ships were able to explore further down the African coast, and soon came across a large native nation called the Mali. They were eager to trade their ideas of Divine Right to the Scots, in exchange for the secrets of Sailing and Guilds. Buried amongst the information brought back to Scotland was plans for a Forbidden Palace, that would act as a great secondary source of governance for the Scottish realm. Competition was fierce when deciding the location for construction, but the great trading city of Kalmar swung the debate when the great engineer in residence became personally involved with the project. Kalmar was certain that it deserved the second city status, and with the decline of Lulea’s political might the choice was made.

civ4screenshot0140.jpg

Scottish traders in the Holy Roman Empire had become aware of a new civilisation straddling the Middle East. Emissaries were sent out and the maps of the Ottoman Caliphate were bartered for.

civ4screenshot0141.jpg

civ4screenshot0142.jpg

Throughout the fifteenth century the Scots had been coming into contact with many new nations, and by the 1430’s plague was sweeping through the Kingdom. As medical knowledge was rudimentary and often as deadly as the plague the population in the cities and villages was decimated.

civ4screenshot0001a.jpg

The Scottish royalty soon decided that it would be better to shelter away from the plague pit that was Iona, and by 1440 the Forbidden Palace had been completed in Kalmar.

civ4screenshot0002m.jpg

Scotland had also been dragged into a war with the far away Arabs from vassaling the French, but by 1440 the Arabs had grown fearful of the Scottish and were willing to send tribute for peace.

civ4screenshot0003q.jpg

The maps showed a large and populous Arab state, but Scottish eyes were most drawn to the rich towns of the Nile delta.

civ4screenshot0004i.jpg

It was also in that year that the Scottish caravel finally made it across the Pacific Ocean to reach the Japanese coast. The skills that the hardy bunch of sailors had learnt piloting this stricken vessel halfway around the world would teach all future Scottish sailors how to sail that extra bit faster.

civ4screenshot0005jv.jpg

Now that the Scottish armies had rested and reinforced a new target was needed. Due to expansion in the east the Scottish realm was now in competition with the Russians over control of the Baltic, and the leaders of Lulea petitioned the Scottish King to push back the growing Russian threat. The promise was made that once the route through Europe was plague-free the troops in Iberia would head for the Russian Front.

Nice update. :D

i hope you keep Germany/Russia/whatever you're conquering next
screw stability, you should've kept iberia

screw stability, you should've kept iberia

Because I'm not teching that fast I want to farm my vassals research, so giving Portugal all of Iberia should get it into overdrive. I get bored looking after cities anyway, I like to gift my cities when I can. Think of it as global rearranging.

In the New World the brave Scottish adventurers finally put down the Aztec nation, burning their capital and heading towards the last remaining native outpost. Meanwhile the captured city Huaxyacac was put to work outfitting new settlers to colonise the fertile Mexican land.

civ4screenshot0007w.jpg

Through their explorations in the Mediterranean merchants from Kalmar made contact with an old African Kingdom, whom had survived the Arabic incursion that had claimed Egypt. The desert lands of the Ethiopian peoples contained many luxuries like incense, that they were willing to trade for Scottish furs.

civ4screenshot0009.jpg

That year the Scottish King Gordain decided that his numerous vassals should contribute to the stability of the realm, and he ordered the Kingdom of Scotland to adopt Viceroyalty.

civ4screenshot0011m.jpg

The last native city Tampico was no match for the Scottish knights, and the leaders of the expedition decided that the city should be razed, so that the colonists could later settle a better city to the west.

civ4screenshot0012.jpg

As if the plague was not ravaging Portugal enough, their masters Scotland even had the temerity to sabotage their new city.

civ4screenshot0013j.jpg

Throughout the fifteenth century Scottish colonisation continued, with Iona becoming overpopulated a prince named Aulvir took a band of settlers to the island to the northwest.

civ4screenshot0014t.jpg

Scotland’s vassals were rapidly increasing their technological knowledge, but seemed unwilling to share their secrets. The Scots knew that they would have to increase their espionage activities to gain these technologies, though supporting a large army and distant colonies was weighing down the Scottish economy. New plunder was needed to keep the Scottish Kingdom afloat.

civ4screenshot0019.jpg

Luckily the colonists in the new world remembered that there were rich and bloated native towns that had yet to come under the Portuguese banner. These defenceless settlements could not resist the veteran conquistadors, and were swiftly pillaged.

civ4screenshot0021.jpg

civ4screenshot0026z.jpg

Combined with some money-earning diplomacy the Scottish treasury had enough riches to support a large land invasion of the Russian provinces. While a small army of pike and catapults headed to the only Russian port Novgorod the main Scottish army headed straight east to Ekaterinoslav. None other than the Crown Prince of Scotland Dunaid the first was sent to command this mighty army.

civ4screenshot0027.jpg

Novgorod was quickly surrounded as knights from Lulea poured south from Finland. It only took a few years before the Scottish flag was raised over the city. To expand their control of the Baltic, the army commanders decided to spare the city, and remake it as a great Scandinavian city.

civ4screenshot0030.jpg

civ4screenshot0033j.jpg

The city of Ekaterinoslav was lightly defended by a single battalion of bowmen, and they could not stay the Scottish advance. Prince Dunaid ordered the city razed, so there would be no distractions as the army marched on to Moskva.

civ4screenshot0035d.jpg

The tribes of the New World had come to the realisation that the colonists were nothing but trouble, and a large gathering was spotted making its way to the Scottish city. Word also reached the Scots that Khmer Empire had been expanding its holdings in the collapsed Chinese Empire, and would perhaps become a force to contend with.

civ4screenshot0038r.jpg

The reason for Japanese dominance over world politics is illuminated by a Great Lighthouse seen by the voyaging Scottish Caravel. The sailors also recorded a giant golden samurai standing a hundred feet tall over the Kyouto harbour, but this was dismissed as the ramblings of drunken sailors.

civ4screenshot0039.jpg

The siege of Moskva was the toughest that the Scots had faced in the Russian campaign, and the Russian winter had been taking its toll on men and supplies. The ranged defenders of Moskva even managed to kill the first wave of siege sent against them, but these heroic British artillerymen managed to open enough of a breach that the rest of the army could pour in and capture the city.

civ4screenshot0041r.jpg

civ4screenshot0042y.jpg

Without resting the majority of the army turned northwards to meet up with the Swedish forces at the Russian city of Tver. It only took a few years until that city also fell to the Scottish armies.

civ4screenshot0043g.jpg

civ4screenshot0048f.jpg

Even then the arrogant leader of the Russians refused all reasonable offers of peace, and it seemed further campaigning deeper into the Russian heartland was needed.

civ4screenshot0049f.jpg

As the Scottish caravel headed back to the Scottish New World, they came across another native civilisation to the south. However the Scots did not need a second war to contend with, and there seemed to be no new conquistadors so a cautious peace was made.

civ4screenshot0051t.jpg

The same the jealously guarded secrets of music were stolen from the French by daring Scottish spies, and the court of Iona decided that this would probably be the best way of keeping the Scots up to speed technologically.

civ4screenshot0053.jpg

Finally in 1520, as the Scottish armies approached his hiding place in Caricyn the Russian King Peter finally accepted Scottish rule over his nation and surrendered. The Scots were magnanimous victors, and gave the day to day control of the Russian provinces back to the local nobility.
